Kniha Martina C. Putny, vycházející po patnácti letech, se odlišuje od většiny havlovských publikací – buď oslavných, nebo naopak motivovaných záští a závistí. Nepojímá totiž Václava Havla jako izolovaný fenomén, ale spíše jako průsečík vlivů, které působily na jeho myšlení a tvorbu, a posléze i na jeho činnost státnickou a politickou. Jednak jde o vlivy rodinné – spiritismus dědečka Vácslava Havla, masarykovství a zednářství otce Václava M. Havla, bohémství strýce Miloše Havla, filosofování o jazyce a komunikaci bratra Ivana M. Havla –, jednak o vlivy rozličných skupin přátel, jimiž byl Havel obklopen od svých středoškolských let (skupiny Šestatřicátníci), přes kulturní scénu let šedesátých (filosof Josef Šafařík, divadelník Ivan Vyskočil a další), přes prostředí disentu (zejména skupiny patočkovských filosofů Kampademie) až po první, tvůrčí léta na Hradě. Havel nebyl originálním myslitelem, ale žákem myslitelů. Nebyl nábožensky vyhraněný, zato však naladěný naslouchat různým tradičně náboženským, alternativně náboženským i vůči náboženství kritickým proudům. I díky tomu dokázal prostředkovat mezi odlišnými názorovými skupinami a chránit, nakolik to bylo možné, před rozpadem jak český disent, tak později českou společnost.
Toto vydání Putnovy knihy je doplněno o několik reflexí patnácti let, které uplynuly od Havlova úmrtí a ústí do varování před havlovským kultem a pseudohavlovskými „mesiáši“.

Zdůrazněn je rostoucí vliv náboženského fundamentalismu. Zobrazen je též izraelsko-palestinský konflikt a Jeruzalém. V závěru knihy je popsán krach mírových jednání v Camp Davidu a eskalace násilí v důsledku sporu o svrchovanost Jeruzaléma a Chrámové hory. Důležitou součástí knihy je popis traumatu z atentátu na Jicchaka Rabina v roce 1995. Vše je prokládáno zasvěceným rozborem místní kultury, náboženských pravidel a politických zvyklostí.

In 1999 my expedition found George Mallory’s body on Mount Everest. The intense public interest in his tragic fate obscured the other actors in that dramatic story.The pioneers who attempted the first climbs in 1922 and 1924 knew nothing about the mountain other than its height. They had to learn the hard way about the lack of oxygen, the jet-stream winds, the illnesses of altitude, and the vital importance of the Sherpas. They fought cerebral oedema, frostbite, hypothermia and raging thirst in the cold, thin air. They had to find a route, avoid avalanches, and work out what to do when confronted by an insuperable rock climb at extreme altitude. Many of them died.Howard Somervell was Mallory''s closest friend on the mountain in 1922 and 1924. He was an exceptionally gifted man: he had a double first at Cambridge, he was a talented artist and an accomplished musician. He served as a surgeon at the Battle of the Somme during the First World War and was one of the foremost alpinists of the day when he was invited to join the 1922 Mount Everest expedition. After Everest he was awarded an Olympic gold medal for Alpinism in 1924.
