Kniha spomienok významného slovenského lekára - gastroenterológa a vedca. Do roku 1968 pracoval na Slovensku v oblasti výskumu a po sovietskej okupácii odišiel s rodinou do USA. Vlado Šimko pútavo píše o živote doma, dôvodoch odchodu, ale najmä pôsobení v USA, kde prednášal na univerzite, venoval sa výskumu a pracoval v nemocnici. Píše však nielen o práci, ale približuje svoj rodinný príbeh: ťažké začiatky, spoznávanie nového domova a úspechy, priateľstvá, rodinné tragédie a nezlomnú vôľu nevzdať sa, ísť ďalej. Značnú časť textu venuje svojej veľkej záľube: cestovaniu po svete. Novéna s Engelmarem Unzeitigem, "andělem z Dachau"
P. Engelmar Hubert Unzeitig (1911 – 1945) byl kněz a misionář německé národnosti, původem ze Svitavska. Stal se členem Kongregace marianhillských misionářů a za války působil v Zadní Zvonkové u Lipna. Za kritiku nacismu a zastávání se Židů byl poslán do koncentračního tábora. Už jeho spoluvězni ho považovali za světce, proto mu začali říkat „anděl z Dachau“. Při epidemii tyfu se nabídl k ošetřování nemocných, přičemž se sám nakazil a jen krátce před osvobozením zemřel.
V roce 1991 byl v Německu zahájen jeho kanonizační proces. Dá-li Bůh, bude završen 24. září 2016 v bavorském Würzburgu prohlášením otce Engelmara za blahoslaveného.

Zdeněk Brtnický z Valdštejna (1582–1623), moravský šlechtic předbělohorské doby, je autorem pozoruhodného deníku, ve kterém zachytil mnoho zajímavého o každodenním životě vyšších vrstev v českých zemích v daném období, ale především své zkušenosti a zážitky z kavalírských cest po řadě evropských zemí. Ondřej Podavka využívá tento unikátní pramen k vykreslení života Zdeňka Brtnického. Věnuje se humanistickému vzdělání, jehož se mu dostalo, jeho četbě a intelektuálním a uměleckým zájmům, hudbě a divadlu. Pozornosti se dostává síti kontaktů, jež si moravský šlechtic na svých cestách vybudoval, a jeho luteránskému náboženskému zázemí. Zvláštní místo zaujímá vztah ke Karlu staršímu ze Žerotína, nejvlivnější postavě mezi moravskými nekatolickými šlechtici. Moje válečná Odyssea
Když v létě 1914 vypukla světová války, Vladimír Vaněk pobýval v ruské Oděse. Nejprve se chtěl stát válečným dopisovatelem ze srbské fronty, když se však začala v Kyjevě formovat Česká družina, patřil k jedněm z prvních dobrovolníků. Absolvoval vojenský výcvik i první boje na frontě, v listopadu se však dobrovolně přihlásil na tzv. tajnou rozvědku – misi, během které měl proniknout do českých zemí a předat zde politickým představitelům informace o čs. odboji v Rusku. Jako jediný z pětičlenné skupiny úkol splnil. Následně se nechal odvést do rakousko-uherské armády a na frontě přeběhl zpět k Rusům. Popis průběhu tohoto nebezpečného a dramatického, ale zároveň i dobrodružného, úkolu tvoří převážnou část vzpomínek. V roce 1916 byl poslán do Londýna za prof. Masarykem, prováděl nábor krajanů pro čs. odboj v Itálii a následně působil ve Švýcarsku v Tiskové kanceláři Národní rady, kde měl mimo jiné za úkol obstarávat důležité zprávy a informace z domova a jejich předávání spojencům. Tímto „špionským“ obdobím, kdy vedl tajnou válku nejen s rakousko-uherskými agenty, ale i místní nedůvěřivou policí, jeho vzpomínky končí.

Číst o procesu objevování léku, o peripetiích, kdy se prochází slepými uličkami a začíná se stále znovu, je jako číst detektivní román. A čtenář začne chápat, proč vědci tráví celé hodiny dlouho do noci ve svých laboratořích, když se zdá, že objev je na dosah. S knihou pamětí Jána Vilčeka se může čtenář na tu zajímavou a tajuplnou cestu vydat. Ján Vilček nezůstal Newyorské univerzitě nic dlužen. Věnoval jí část svých příjmů z licence a prodeje léku. A nejen to. Založil nadaci, rovněž financovanou z příjmů licence, a ta podporuje jednak mladé vědce, jednak i mladé umělce. Snaží se vyzdvihnout přínos vědců a umělců, kteří se do Spojených států přistěhovali. Je asi málo lidí na světě, kteří mnohem větší část svých příjmů rozdali, než si nechali pro sebe. Ján Vilček prožil smysluplný a bohatý život, naplněný hlavně láskou k vědě, umění a samozřejmě k lidem.
