Generál četnictva Karel Vyčítal
Kniha přibližuje profesní kariéru jedné z nepříliš známých postav bezpečnostního aparátu meziválečného Československa. Karel Vyčítal (1872–1952) představoval svým původem a vzděláním archetyp rakousko-uherského četnického důstojníka, sehrál ovšem velmi důležitou roli při formování pořádkových sil nově vzniklého československého státu: v komplikované popřevratové době velel četnictvu v pohraničním regionu Slezska, zmítaném národnostními i sociálními nepokoji, a později stál téměř deset let v čele celého četnického sboru. Třetí, závěrečný svazek monumentální Kafkovy biografie Roky poznání zachycuje poslední necelé desetiletí Kafkova života, od roku 1916 do smrti v roce 1924. Uvedené období prožívá Kafka ve znamení zhroucení všech hodnot a jistot: První světová válka dokonale otřásla jeho už tak dost podlomenou vírou v lidstvo. Zaniklo Rakousko-Uhersko a z Kafky se stal německý Žid s českým pasem. Propukla u něj tuberkulóza, která ho čím dál tím více omezovala v životě i tvorbě. Ani jeho vztahy se ženami mu nedávaly naději na štěstí: Zrušení druhého zasnoubení v roce 1917 definitivně ukončilo pět let trvající poměr s Berlíňankou Felice Bauerovou. S další snoubenkou Julií Wohryzkovou se Kafka rozešel po necelém roce známosti. Intenzivně si také dopisoval s Milenou Jesenskou, která přeložila do češtiny některé jeho prózy. Poslední ženou jeho života byla Dora Diamantová, seznámil se s ní v roce 1923. Byla jedinou ženou, s níž žil, a ona o něj pečovala až do jeho předčasné smrti v roce 1924. Narůstající Kafkova nejistota, váhavost a pochybnosti také způsobily, že díla z té doby zůstala nedokončená či pouze v rukopisné, dle autora nehotové verzi. To vše Stach líčí živým, napínavým a dynamickým stylem, s panoramatickými pohledy na tehdejší dobu a dobové souvislosti, s překvapivými změnami perspektivy a s téměř scénickými obrazy.
Stachovi se v jeho třídílné Kafkově biografii podařilo proniknout k tajemství světoznámého spisovatele jako dosud nikomu z jeho předchůdců.

Bonviván Bohuslav Kilian
K pozoruhodným osobnostem první Československé republiky patřil i vzdělaný právník, vydavatel a dobrodruh Bohuslav Kilian. Jeho unikátní časopisy Salon a Měsíc jsou dodnes tichými svědky uměleckého a společenského života i technického vzestupu této doby.
Kniha přináší podrobnou sondu do života rodiny Kilianovy, známé pouze částečně z filmu Jiřího Menzela Postřižiny. Významné osobnosti starého Prešporka
V minulosti bola Bratislava, respektíve Prešporok, multikultúrnym mestom. Narodili sa tu, bývali, založili si tu rodinu alebo tu našli prácu mnohí učenci, lekári či umelci. Na Bratislavskom hrade sa narodila svätá Alžbeta Uhorská, korunovaná tu bola Mária Terézia a s mestom je spätá aj dobrodinka Terézia Brunšviková. Spoločnou charakteristikou všetkých týchto rôznorodých osobností je fakt, že sa narodili do roku 1800.
