„Narodil jsem se 20. června 1892 v Petřvaldě na Těšínsku jakožto páté dítě z dvanácti, syn horníka Jana Vicherka a Aloisie. Po absolvování dvouleté průmyslovky jsem nastoupil do Orlovských strojíren v Porubě. V roce 1915 jsem byl odveden do rakouské armády a po výcviku odeslán na ruskou frontu. Dne 1. 8. 1917 jsem nastoupil u 5. pěšího pluku T. G. Masaryka, kde jsem se stal poddůstojníkem. Jako velitel čety jsem bojoval na Sibiři a Dálném východě. V květnu 1919 jsem byl přeložen k letectvu a povýšen na podporučíka. Leteckou školu jsem vedl až do odsunu do vlasti v lednu 1920. V srpnu téhož roku jsem nastoupil vojenskou službu u leteckého učiliště v Chebu a tam absolvoval stíhací výcvik a stal se štábním kapitánem. Koncem roku 1924 mě velení odeslalo na Vysokou školu leteckou do Paříže, kterou jsem v roce 1927 absolvoval jako inženýr letectví a strojní mechaniky. V roce 1925 se mi podařilo vytvořit několik leteckých národních rekordů. Téhož roku jsem se oženil. Byl jsem vybrán za člena doprovodu T. G. Masaryka do Francie. Zde mě dekoroval francouzský president čestnou legií. V roce 1927 jsem byl povýšen na majora a rok poté jsem vytvořil dva světové letecké rekordy. V roce 1929 jsem byl ustanoven velitelem perutě a povýšen na podplukovníka, v roce 1933 pak na plukovníka a stal se přednostou I. odd. III. leteckého odboru MNO, kde jsem působil až do likvidace armády. Po 15. březnu 1939 jsem se spolupracovníky organizoval ilegální odchod našich letců do zahraničí. Koncem roku 1939 jsem na výzvu opustil ČSR. Moje žena pracovala s plk. Mašínem a kpt. Morávkem, v červenci 1942 byla zatčena a v říjnu téhož roku popravena v Mauthausenu. Pod jménem Josef Slezák jsem byl ve Francii a do roku 1941 ve Velké Británii velitelem čs. letectva. V roce 1941 jsem byl přidělen do kanceláře presidenta republiky pro průmyslové záležitosti a stal se předsedou Československého červeného kříže. Koncem roku 1944 si mě vyžádalo vedení odboje v SSSR k převzetí velení 1. čs. samostatné smíšené letecké divize. V březnu 1945 jsem odletěl z Londýna do Moskvy, k naší jednotce na frontu a s ní prožil zakončení druhé světové války. V roce 1946 jsem byl povýšen na divizního a v roce 1948 na sborového generála. V roce 1948 jsem se podruhé oženil. 15. zasedání Nejvyšší rady obrany státu 1. června 1950 rozhodlo „odeslat ihned na dovolenou a penzionovat generála Vicherka“, dne 30. června jsem podepsal protokol o předání materiálů velitele letectva a dnem 1. července jsem byl přeložen do výslužby. Zaměstnání jsem našel až v roce 1952. Téhož roku mi byl snížen odpočivný plat o 2/3 proto, že prý jsem byl přisluhovačem buržoazního režimu.“

Nechceme popisovat Vídeň tak, jak ji zná běžný turista. Vídeň plnou památek, nádherných kostelů, paláců a muzeí. So, I've written a book.
Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ('It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!'), I have decided to write these stories just as I have always done, in my own hand. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I've recorded and can't wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.
This certainly doesn't mean that I'm quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it's like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters...the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.
