Zakládající kádr pilotů Československých státních aerolinií nebyl příliš široký, první zmínky o budoucích pilotech lze nalézt v březnu 1923, kdy velitelé leteckých pluků dostali úkol nominovat po šesti zkušených a spolehlivých rotmistrech. Z návrhů velitelů pluků major Holeka vybral celkem 19 pilotů, kteří přicházeli v úvahu pro provozování letecké dopravy. V pravidelném provozu ČSA koncem roku 1923 potom najdeme šest pilotů, jmenovitě rotmistry Josefa Sedláře, Tomáše Galinovského, Karla Brabence, Františka Výborného, Bohuslava Hrazdila a Karla Dovolila.

Shlomo Birnbaum, narozený v roce 1927, vyrůstal v ortodoxní židovské rodině v polské Čenstochové. Po vpádu nacistů do Polska v září roku 1939 byla rodina přemístěna do ghetta, kde každodenní život provázely smrt a strach. Shlomo Birnbaum ještě dnes říká: “Zažil jsem, jak moje maminka byla poslána na smrt, jak byli zabiti moji sourozenci. Ztratil jsem víru. Kde byl tehdy Bůh?”
Shlomo přežil spolu se svým otcem, který mu opakovaně zachránil život. Po své „záchraně” však musel odvádět otrockou práci ve zbrojnické továrně a po válce byl opět konfrontován s vražednou nenávistí vůči Židům – tentokrát z polské strany.
Shlomo a jeho otec Árie nakonec utečou do země, do níž nechtěli nikdy vkročit: do Německa. V Mnichově Shlomo založí rodinu, má čtyři děti, stane se podnikatelem a nalezne zde přátele. Přestože minulost nikdy nedokáže zcela uzavřít, přece jen žije nový život, což považoval za nemožné.
