Memoirs of a Bengal Civilian

. Beames was a man of strong opinions and was often in trouble with the authorities because of his outspokenness. He thought little of Lieutenant-Governors as a class. But his special dislike was reserved for Sir Richard Temple, Lt. Governor of Bengal, whose vanity and self-glorification he couldn't stand. There were instances when Beames stood by the people against tyranny. But, ironically enough, he also shared the casual racism of his peers and did not recognise Indian ICS officers as his academic and cultural equals: he strongly distrusted the Bengali intelligentsia. Beames was a pioneer philologist. A magnum opus of his is the three volume Comparative Grammar of the Modern Aryan Languages of India (1872-79). Other works of his include Outline of Indian Philology (1867) and Grammar for the Bengali Language (1891). He knew a number of languages including Persian, Sanskrit, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, and Hindi and had a working knowledge of German, French and Italian. Beames started writing his Memoirs in 1875 but completed the task only after retirement, in England. His outspokenness which held him down in his career is his chief strength as a writer and tremendously enhances the value of his estimates of men and affairs of his time.

Far Above The World

A landmark exploration of David Bowie as an everlasting cultural force and changemaker, by acclaimed writer Paul Morley. In the ten years since the death of David Bowie in 2016 there has been no loss of interest in and fascination with his life, music and driven, complex personality. He is definitely one musician, one performer, destined not to be forgotten. The significant grief and sadness that greeted Bowie''s death has evolved into a deeper, enduring love for his music, style, wit, artistic curiosity, sexual energy, flamboyant outsider spirit and insatiable, provocative appetite for life.Far Above the World will document one of the UK''s greatest creative artists, through the spectacularly colourful and vibrant journey of a man who constantly reinvented himself and his music. Bowie lived in the future, using the pop song to chronicle overwhelming and dangerous times, searching for the light, and creating a communication channel between post-war 20th century times and where(ever) we are now. This anniversary book will place him in the now and next, as much as is past, and argue that his songs, and his messages, reflections and warnings become ever more relevant and compelling as time passes.

Last Boy of ’66

And here comes Hurst. He''s got... Some people are on the pitch. They think it''s all over. It is now. It''s four!Geoff Hurst''s extraordinary hat trick turned him into a global superstar overnight. There is no player in the history of the game so universally identified with a single match. But the full story of the nation''s biggest ever sporting victory is about much more than those final moments. Here Geoff remembers his teammates, the times they spent on and off the pitch, the extraordinary journey they went on together, what football meant to each of them, their work ethic, their culture of team loyalty, their continued bond over the decades. The enormous salaries paid to today''s Premier League stars means that when they finish playing, few will ever have to work again. The 1966 team never had that option. They were payed L60 per match, and received a L1,000 bonus for winning. Most tried, and failed, to become successful managers, with Jack Charlton being a notable exception. Twenty years after they scored the England goals in the final, Geoff and Martin Peters were selling motor insurance. Ray Wilson was an undertaker.Yet all remained aware they achieved something on 30th July 1966 which may never be repeated, and did so staying close to their roots. The day after the final Alan Ball stopped at a motorway cafe on the M6. One or two people asked to see his winner''s medal, then left him to his egg and chips. Geoff mowed the lawn. ''That''s what you did on a Sunday''.In Last Boy of 66 our 1966 hat-trick hero takes us back to those very different days. A definitive and important eye-witness account, to be treasured by fans and historians for generations to come.

Arne Slot

Arne Slot: The Biography is the definitive portrait of the Dutch manager who took on one of the toughest jobs in football – succeeding Jürgen Klopp – and delivered a Premier League triumph in his first season at Liverpool FC. Slot had proven himself in the Netherlands – leading AZ Alkmaar to a second-place finish and delivering Feyenoord their first title in six years. With a bold, high-pressing style and sharp mind, he had earned a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest managerial prospects. When Klopp’s era ended in 2024, Anfield held its breath. But Slot stepped into the void with calm authority and tactical brilliance. By Christmas, Liverpool were top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables, having lost just once. Key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai found renewed form under his leadership. Slot ushered in a new era of confidence and cohesion at Anfield. In this richly detailed biography, acclaimed Dutch author Maarten Meijer traces Slot’s journey from the quiet village of Bergentheim to the Premier League summit. He unpacks the methods, mentality and rise of a coach who has already lifted his first major English trophy and whose vision and leadership are reshaping Liverpool’s future.

Seeing Through

The true confessions of a working opera composer: an exhilarating story of "a life that comes out of chaos." At eight years old, Ricky Ian Gordon pulled The Victor Book of Opera off his piano teacher’s bookshelf, and his world shifted on its axis. Though scandal, sadness, and confusion would shake that world over the next few decades, its polestar remained constant. Music has been the guiding force of Gordon’s life; through it, he has been able not only to survive great sorrow but also to capture the depths of his emotion in song. It is this strength, this technical and visceral genius, that has made him one of our generation’s greatest composers. In Seeing Through, Gordon writes with humor, insight, and incredible candor about his life and work: a tumultuous youth on Long Island, his artistic collaborations and obsessions, the creation of his compositions (including The Grapes of Wrath, 27, Orpheus and Euridice, Intimate Apparel, Ellen West, and more), his addictions and the abuses he endured, and the loss of his partner to AIDS and the devastation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. As Gordon writes of that period: “We were, thousands of us, Lazarus. We had to rise from the ashes. We didn’t have to rebuild our lives, we had to build new ones.” Gordon has succeeded in building a remarkable life, as well as a body of work that bears witness to all he survived in the process—one that will endure as a pivotal chapter in America''s songbook.

Stranger in the Desert

One Thanksgiving afternoon at his grandparents'' house, Jordan Salama discovers a large binder stuffed with yellowing papers and old photographs - a five-hundred-year wandering history of his Arab-Jewish family, from Moorish Spain to Ottoman Syria to Argentina and beyond. One story in particular captures his attention: that of his great-grandfather, a Syria-born, Arabic-speaking Jewish immigrant to Argentina who in the 1920s worked as a traveling salesman in the Andes - and may have left behind forgotten descendants along the way. Encouraged by his grandfather, Jordan goes in search of these ''Lost Salamas,'' traveling more than a thousand miles up the spine of South America''s greatest mountain range. Combining travelog, history, memoir, and reportage, Stranger in the Desert transports readers from the lonely plains of Patagonia to the breath-taking altiplano of the high Andes; from the old Jewish quarter of Damascus to today''s vibrant neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires. It is also a fervent journey of self-discovery as Salama grapples with his own Jewish, Arab, and Latin American identities, interrogating the stories families tell themselves, and to what end.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
