The View From Down Here

''A vital call to arms that demands we confront ableism at every level of society.'' Sophie Morgan''I have never related to a book more. Disabled or not, you must read it!'' Rosie Jones''A sharp, funny, and deeply beautiful memoir that doesn''t shy away from the realities of disabled life.'' Ruth MadeleyWomen''s lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people''s lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of expectations. But what happens when you''re subjected to both sets of rules? This powerful, honest, hilarious and furious memoir from journalist and advocate Lucy Webster looks at life at the intersection; the struggles, the joys and the unseen realities of being a disabled woman. From navigating the worlds of education and work, dating and friendship; to managing care; contemplating motherhood; and learning to accept your body against a pervasive narrative that it is somehow broken and in need of fixing, The View From Down Here shines a light on what it really means to move through the world as a disabled woman.

Egypt's Golden Couple

Akhenaten has been the subject of radically different, even contradictory, biographies. The king has achieved fame as the world’s first individual and the first monotheist, but others have seen him as an incestuous tyrant who nearly ruined the kingdom he ruled. The gold funerary mask of his son Tutankhamun and the painted bust of his wife Nefertiti are the most recognizable artifacts from all of ancient Egypt. But who were Akhenaten and Nefertiti? And what do we actually know about rulers who lived more than three thousand years ago?It has been one hundred years since the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and although “King Tut” is a household name, his nine-year rule pales in comparison to the revolutionary reign of his parents. Akhenaten and Nefertiti became gods on earth by transforming Egyptian solar worship, making innovations in art and urban design, and merging religion and politics in ways never attempted before. Combining fascinating scholarship, the suspense of detective work, and adventurous thrills, Egypt’s Golden Couple is a journey through excavations, museums, hieroglyphic texts, and stunning artifacts. From clue to clue, renowned Egyptologists John and Colleen Darnell reconstruct an otherwise untold story of the magnificent reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti.

Blythe Spirit

''Moving, candid, vivid, it is all that we could hope for in a memoir of this unique and treasured writer'' ROWAN WILLIAMS''An unusually intimate and affectionate portrait'' PATRICK BARKHAM, GUARDIAN''As a boy I dreamed of scholars and saints wandering around markets and cornfields, and of artists and poets sitting under the trees.''Ronald Blythe (1922-2023), author of the inimitable Akenfield, was a prolific and poetic chronicler of rural and spiritual life, nature and literature. He spent a joyful century close to his Suffolk roots, time travelling in his imagination and publishing forty books and thousands of essays. His wide creative network included John and Christine Nash, Cedric Morris, Benjamin Britten, E. M. Forster, Patricia Highsmith and Richard Mabey. From finding Thomas Hardy in February rain and John Clare in country tracks, to talking to his white cat and reading through a dragonfly''s wings, the Blythe gift was to marvel in the everyday. His writing was intimate, meditative and often laced with a wry humour, inviting readers to share his enchanting perspective on the world. Yet few knew the ''real'' Ronald Blythe. Leaving school at 14, he educated himself in libraries, churches and walks in the East Anglian landscape. He never spoke about early poverty and traumatic experience in the war, while his sexuality was kept private except from those closest to him.Drawing on unparalleled access to letters, notebooks, published works, drafts, and conversations from decades of friendship, Ian Collins tells the full story of Ronald Blythe for the first time. The result is a sensitive, revelatory portrait which celebrates a fascinating, complex man and casts new light on one of our greatest writers.

In the ten years since the death of David Bowie in 2016 there has been no loss of interest in and fascination with his life, music and driven, complex personality. He is definitely one musician, one performer, destined not to be forgotten. The significant grief and sadness that greeted Bowie''s death has evolved into a deeper, enduring love for his music, style, wit, artistic curiosity, sexual energy, flamboyant outsider spirit and insatiable, provocative appetite for life.Far Above the World will document one of the UK''s greatest creative artists, through the spectacularly colourful and vibrant journey of a man who constantly reinvented himself and his music. Joe Cole, Luxury Player

The long-awaited memoir from England, Chelsea and West Ham legend, Joe Cole ''I want to tell you about how football - English football - felt different for me. For much of my life it felt like I was in the wrong place, trying to play a different tune.''One of the best players of his era, Joe Cole was the teenage prodigy in a West Ham team that challenged at the top of the Premier League and also had a scrap at the bottom. He was a star in Roman Abramovich''s Chelsea that changed football forever as well as England''s so-called Golden Generation. He grew up playing football in the parks and cages of North London''s estates, and Joe''s ability, grit and hard work, took him to the very top. But Joe was often mistrusted by managers and out of step with the style of English football in the 2000s. The game was still suspicious of creative footballers it considered luxury players - the kind it could regard as an indulgence. With honesty and an eye for the absurdities of football, Joe takes us inside the dressing room to reveal it all. From his days at the prestigious Lilleshall School of Excellence and rising through the ranks at West Ham, to signing for Chelsea and winning it all under José Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, before being discarded by his boyhood club after a remarkable 7-year spell. He offers an insider account of a fascinating era in modern football, playing alongside the likes of Lampard and Drogba, Beckham and Rooney, Gerrard and Di Canio. He talks about his experiences playing for England, his extraordinary goal against Sweden at the 2006 World Cup, and the reality of being managed by Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. It was a remarkable career. Then came the tumultuous end, as Joe battled severe injuries and his family suffered loss. He takes us on the journey of a great player coming to terms with his waning powers as his body began to fail him and football moved on. Football had given him everything. But then, it was over. Beyond football, Joe writes movingly of his family, his father''s brushes with the law, and how an inner-city working class family adjusted to the fame of their son.Candid, raw and unforgettable, this is Joe Cole in his own words for the very first time, a must-read for any football fan.

Running From Office

As Ireland's Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy took on one of the toughest briefs in government, one that continues to be a challenge today. Looking back at his life in the build-up to parliamentary office and at his time in the cabinet, Eoghan brings a self-lacerating and deeply personal view of the life of a modern politician trying - and often failing - to make the positive change he hoped to deliver. Brutal and sometimes harrowing, Eoghan's tale is also surprisingly funny, though the humour is only ever at the author's expense. If, in the end, all political careers end in failure, why didn't anyone tell the author that? There are no heroes or villains here, just a person facing their own limitations as they navigate the unfamiliar world of campaigns, elected office and government responsibility. Bringing refreshing candour to the pressures and absurdity of politics, this book shows us who our politicians really are when there's nothing left to spin and no one there to spin it to.

Paul O’Grady – Not The Same Without You

He was a campaigner, a political advocate, and a trailblazer. But most of all, he was a friend. And I’d like to share that person with you. It’s more than two years since the much-loved entertainer, broadcaster and national treasure Paul O’Grady died, and yet his voice still echoes — in laughter, in memory, in the unshakeable affection of millions. In this deeply personal and revealing biography, Paul’s longtime collaborator Malcolm Prince draws on two decades of friendship — and hours of private recordings — to tell the story of the man behind the icon: the sharp-witted, fiercely loyal, irrepressibly funny, and deeply private individual, known to his close friends as ‘Savage’ — and to the public, in various guises, as the prime time TV star, the nation’s dog-loving agony uncle, and a Sunday afternoon radio companion. Malcolm revisits the stages Paul made his own, from the Royal Vauxhall Tavern to the London Palladium; the moments that shaped him; and draws on brand-new interviews with the people who knew him best, including his daughter and grandchildren. This is a portrait not just of a gifted entertainer, but of a complex, fiercely loyal, and endlessly curious man, reflecting on a friendship built on shared laughter, private rants, righteous fury, long phone calls, and a healthy dose of gossip — and on a professional legacy that still feels astonishing in its range and resonance.Packed with warmth, humour and never-before-heard stories, NOT THE SAME WITHOUT YOU captures the full measure of a man who defied convention, challenged institutions, made mischief — and made us all feel like we were his best pal.

The Elements of Marie Curie

Dava Sobel, acclaimed and bestselling author of Longitude, chronicles the life and work of the most famous woman in the history of science - and the untold story of the young women who trained in her laboratory. 'A fresh and feminist study of the pioneering Nobel laureate reveals her impact on the women she mentored and set on the path to prominence' Observer 'It is a novel lens through which to view Curie's story, and Sobel paints her tale with characteristic deftness and eloquence' Financial Times For decades Marie Curie was the only woman in the room at international scientific gatherings, and despite constant illness she travelled far and wide to share the secrets of radioactivity, a term she coined. She is still the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two scientific fields. Her ingenuity extended far beyond the laboratory walls; grieving the death of her husband, Pierre, she took his place as professor of physics at the Sorbonne, devotedly raised two daughters, drove a van she outfitted with X-ray equipment to the front lines of World War I, befriended Albert Einstein and inspired generations of young women to pursue science as a way of life. Approaching Marie Curie from a unique angle, Sobel navigates her remarkable discoveries and fame alongside the women who became her legacy - from Norway's Ellen Gleditsch and France's Marguerite Perry, who discovered the element francium, to her own daughter, Irene, a Nobel Prize winner in her own right. The Elements of Marie Curie deftly illuminates the trailblazing life and enduring influence of one of the most consequential figures of our time.

I v Terezíně rostou sedmikrásky

Čerpá i z Adlerových deníků z let 1931–1945. Následuje zmapování období sílící perzekuce, arizaci firmy, nucené práce, a nakonec deportace do pracovního tábora Hagibor a do koncentračního tábora Terezín. Jakožto bývalý podnikatel a člen židovské organizace čelí novému vyšetřování, věznění a zákazu umělecké činnosti.

Kniha Vedli jsme si dobře, hochu obsahuje i unikátní sbírku osobních fotografií a představuje syrové a vášnivé paměti ikonické osobnosti, která svými mimořádnými hereckými výkony inspiruje publikum už více než šedesát let. Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins (*1937) je jedním z nejznámějších a nejplodnějších britských herců. Během své více než šedesátileté kariéry se proslavil rolemi ve filmech jako Mlčení jehňátek, Pozůstatky dne, Thor, Otec, Jeden život a mnoha dalších. Hopkins za své výjimečné herecké výkony získal nesčetná ocenění, mimo jiné dva Oscary, čtyři ceny BAFTA, dvě ceny Emmy a Cenu Laurence Oliviera. We Did Ok, Kid

Academy Award-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins delves into his illustrious film and theatre career, difficult childhood and path to sobriety in his honest, moving and long-awaited memoir. Born and raised in Port Talbot – a small Welsh steelworks town – amid war and depression, Sir Anthony Hopkins grew up around men who were tough, to say the least, and eschewed all forms of emotional vulnerability in favor of alcoholism and brutality. A struggling student in school, he was deemed by his peers, his parents and other adults as a failure with no future ahead of him. But, on a fateful Saturday night, the disregarded Welsh boy watched the 1948 adaptation of Hamlet, sparking a passion for acting that would lead him on a path that no one could have predicted. With candour and a voice that is both arresting and vulnerable, Sir Anthony recounts his various career milestones and provides a once-in-a-lifetime look into the brilliance behind some of his most iconic roles. His performance as Iago gets him admitted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and places him under the wing of Laurence Olivier. He meets Richard Burton by chance as a young boy in his art teacher’s apartment, and later, backstage before a performance of Equus as an established actor meeting his hero. His iconic portrayal of Hannibal Lecter was informed by the creepy performance of Bela Lugosi in Dracula and the razor-sharp precision of his acting teacher. He pulls raw emotion from the stoicism of his father and grandfather for an unforgettable performance in King Lear. Sir Anthony also takes a deeply honest look at the low points in his personal life. His addiction cost him his first marriage, his relationship with his only child, and nearly his life – the latter ultimately propelling him toward sobriety, a commitment he has maintained for nearly half a century. He constantly battles against the desire to move through life alone and avoid connection for fear of getting hurt – much like the men in his family – and as the years go by, he deals with questions of mortality, getting ready to discover what his father called The Big Secret. Featuring a special collection of personal photographs throughout, We Did OK, Kid is a raw and passionate memoir from a complex, iconic man who has inspired audiences with remarkable performances for over sixty years.

Stala se finskou premiérkou v pouhých čtyřiatřiceti letech a upoutala pozornost celého světa svými progresivními myšlenkami i odvážnými postoji v krizových okamžicích. Marin provedla svou zemi obdobím pandemie covidu-19 a její vláda prosadila řadu progresivních reforem – například při boji s klimatickou změnou a v oblasti rovnosti a sociální spravedlnosti. Jedna její „aféra“ vyvolala mediální šílenství a přiměla mnoho žen včetně Hillary Clinton a Alexandrie Ocasio-Cortez vyjádřit finské premiérce podporu. Nadějí jsou činy je víc než jen kniha vzpomínek, jde spíš o výzvu k aktivitě. Marin apeluje na nastupující generaci vrcholných politiků, aby se své práci naprosto odevzdala. Příběh mladé finské premiérky je nesmírně povzbudivý a posilující a dokazuje, že nastolení skutečné změny máme všichni ve svých rukou.

Notes on Being a Man

Businessman, author, professor, and podcaster Scott Galloway offers a path forward for men and parents of boys. The lack of attention to the growing masculinity crisis has created a void which is now being dangerously filled by the Manosphere and misogyny. Male suicide rates are sky high; employment rates are low and mental health and relationship issues are impossible to ignore. This is not just a male issue: it is affecting society as a whole. Scott Galloway has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years. In Notes on Being a Man, Galloway explores what it means to be a man today, and provides a roadmap for healthy masculinity and mental strength. He shares his own story from boyhood to manhood. In exploring issues like childhood, depression, anger, pressure, money and relationships, he shares the sometimes funny, often painful, lessons he learned along the way. With unflinching honesty, Scott Galloway maps out an enriching, inspiring operator's manual for being a man today. BOYS AND MEN ARE IN CRISIS. SCOTT GALLOWAY HAS A PATH FORWARD. NOTES FOR BEING A MAN: Being a good dad means being good to women. Action absorbs anxiety. Find what you're good at and follow your talent. Get out of the house. Reviving Artemis

An aging woman finds her place in the natural world as a huntress.Reviving Artemis is the unlikely story of a woman raised in mid-twentieth-century suburbia who lived in New York City as a young adult and moved to Vermont in 1984. For more than thirty years, she raised domestic livestock, kept bees, and cultivated fruits and vegetables while teaching literature and telling stories. But when she turned sixty, something shifted. Luskin was overtaken by a primal urge to step out of the garden, off the blazed trails, and into untracked forest by learning to hunt deer. Deeply personal, lyrically told, and funny, Reviving Artemis reveals Luskin’s ambivalence about guns and her fear of entering the forest alone in the dark. She persisted, using her literary acumen to read the forest and, as thoughtfully as she hunts for words, to hunt for deer. With the stories of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, childbirth, and wild nature to inspire her, Luskin became a huntress, determined to age fiercely and compelled to tell this story of finding her place in the natural world.

Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.
