‘The absorbing story of an uncompromising genius of the dance.’ Salman Rushdie‘Candid, compelling. . . I loved every word of insight into the mind of a master.’ Sunday TimesMark Morris was nineteen when he moved to New York to become a professional dancer. Flat broke, he found a group of like-minded artists that danced together, travelled together, slept together – a collective which became the Mark Morris Group.Suddenly, Morris was on a fast ascent, and with success also came controversy: from the circus of his tenure at La Monnaie in Belgium to his work on the biggest flop on Broadway history. But through the Reagan-Bush era and the worst of the AIDS epidemic, Morris emerged as one of the great visionaries of modern dance, an artist as joyful as he is provocative.

Winston and the Windsors

Winston and the Windsors is a rich and vivid story not only of how Churchill befriended and advised Kings, Queens, princes and princesses but of how the Prime Minister’s splendid and glorious association with the crown shaped modern Britain.

Few figures in British history have been so deeply and consequentially involved with the British royal family as Winston Churchill. Churchill was unique in his role: helping to shape not only a single reign but an entire royal dynasty.

However, it was by no means a seamless relationship. At times, the royals treated him with suspicion and contempt; at others they were avuncular, competitive and cheering. Yet whether he was playing the role of antagonist to the royal family or that of trusted confidante, the Prime Minister's influence was central to the twentieth-century history of the monarchy. This is drama of the first order, at times thrilling and always compelling.

Winston and the Windsors marks the first dual biography of Winston Churchill alongside the royal family. Having unearthed much under-appreciated archival material – including diary entries, postcards and letters to and from Kings, Queens and princes – Morton presents a meticulously researched biography of a royal house and a beloved Prime Minister.

Also available:
Diana: Her True Story (9781789290448)
Wallis in Love (9781789293739)
Elizabeth and Margaret (9781789294231)
The Queen (9781789295313)

Hostage

On October 7th, 2023, Hamas terrorists stormed Kibbutz Be’eri, shattering the peaceful life Eli Sharabi had built with his British wife, Lianne, and their teenage daughters, Noiya and Yahel. Dragged barefoot out of his front door while his family watched in horror, Sharabi was plunged into the suffocating darkness of Gaza’s tunnels, where he endured 491 days in captivity. As war raged above him, Sharabi held onto the hope that he would be reunited with his loved ones.In the first memoir by a released Israeli hostage, and the fastest-selling book in Israel’s history, Sharabi offers a searing firsthand account of survival under unimaginable conditions — starvation, isolation, physical beatings, and psychological abuse at the hands of his captors.Eli Sharabi’s story is one of hunger and heartache, of physical pain, longing, loneliness and a helplessness that threatens to destroy the soul. But it is also a story of strength, of resilience, and of the human spirit’s refusal to surrender. It is about the camaraderie forged in captivity, the quiet power of faith, and one man’s unrelenting decision to choose life, time and time again.Reminiscent of Elie Wiesel’s Night, Hostage is a profound witness to history, so that it shall be neither forgotten nor erased.

Letters

''Oliver Sacks’s Letters isn’t a book of the year – it’s a book for a lifetime . . . Keep this by your side, dip into it, be reminded of the wonders of our shared humanity'' – Erica Wagner, ''Books of the year 2024'', New StatesmanA New Yorker and New Statesman Book of the Year 2024Oliver Sacks, one of the great humanists of our age – who describes himself in these pages as a ‘philosophical physician’ and an ‘astronomer of the inward’ – wrote to an eclectic array of family and friends. Most were scientists, artists, and writers, even statesmen: Francis Crick, Antonio Damasio, Jane Goodall, W. H. Auden, Susan Sontag, Stephen Jay Gould, Björk, and his first cousin, Abba Eban. But many of the most eloquent letters in this collection are addressed to the ordinary people who wrote to him with their odd symptoms and questions, to whom he responds with a sense of generosity and wonder. With some correspondents, Sacks shares his struggle for recognition and acceptance both as a physician and as a gay man, providing intimate accounts as well of his passions for competitive weightlifting, motorcycles, botany, and music. With others, he chronicles his penchant for testing the boundaries of authority, the discovery of his writer’s voice, and his explosive seasons of discovery with the patients who populate his book Awakenings. His descriptions of travels as a young man and the extraordinary people he encounters can be lyrical, ferocious, penetrating and hilarious. Many of his musings include the first detailed sketches of an essay forming in his mind, or miniature case histories rivalling those in his beloved essay collections.Sensitively selected and introduced by Kate Edgar, Sacks’s longtime editor, the letters trace the arc of a remarkable life and reveal an often surprising portrait of Sacks as he wrestles with the workings of his own brain and mind.''Here is the unedited Oliver Sacks – struggling, passionate, a furiously intelligent misfit. And also endless interesting. He was a man like no other'' – Atul Gawande, author of Being Mortal''Sacks is an endearing and entertaining prose stylist – inquisitive, often funny, never obtuse . . . Letters is crammed with off-the-cuff profundities, moments of elevated perception that briefly unriddle the more inscrutable aspects of human nature.'' – Ralf Webb, Guardian

Midwinter

On frosty nights, as he sits by a flickering fire, Michael Harding withdraws into the stillness of winter and begins to reckon with age and death. As stories emerge from the shadows, we meet a young boy whose arrival brings hope, but whose journey will know winter's path. November is a rainstorm, December a bleak twilight, but as January dawns and the icethaws, the fragile light of love penetrates the dark, bringing beauty to the earth and making new beginnings possible. In writing of shadowed beauty, Midwinter is a poignant exploration of a season of loss, and the glimpses of hope that can follow even the longest nights. Snow falls within. Blanketing the heart in peace. Winter's dream takes hold. This book is dedicated to everyone at Pieta House, a suicide prevention charity. This is a work of non-fiction apart from the character of Martin who is fictional but whose story reflects the heartache and loss so many families endure every year.

Hexy Witch

Following her 2021 bestselling memoir Don''t Laugh, It''ll Only Encourage Her comes the laugh out loud follow-up Hexy Witch.''My life''s changed a lot since This Country came out. Among all the amazing times there have been some stranger ones: the time a man climbed the wall into my garden and curled one out on the lawn while staring me dead in the eyes. Or that time I was visited by a pair of legs running around my bedroom as I watched Paw Patrol with my son. And I will never ever forget joining a coven, regressing to a past life, and attempting to have sex with a ghost.I know that talking about this stuff still feels very taboo. If you say you are a believer in certain circles it''s like announcing to a meeting of the Women''s Institute that you masturbate. Or dropping the C-bomb in front of a parish priest. But for as long as I can remember I''ve been fascinated by the unexplained.I''ve explored haunted houses, interrogated experts who claim they can communicate with the other side, and investigated paganism, which turned out to be a front for swinging.Things have always cracked me up but they''re about to get HEXY

In the Future of Yesterday

In the Future of Yesterday offers a refreshing approach to the life and work of Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, delving into his considerable contribution to world literature, rooted in the Austro-Jewish tradition. A world traveller from the outset, Zweig liked to uproot himself – but whether he stayed in London, New York, or eventually Brazil, his literary baggage continued to contain the flair of fin de sie`cle Vienna. Looking anew at Zweig’s influential time in England and offering fresh insights into his final years in the United States and Brazil, Go¨rner discusses Zweig’s prolific literary output in relation to his life and treats his political views on Europe, Zionism, and the world order with great depth and scrutiny. Most importantly, In the Future of Yesterday shows Zweig as a towering figure of a form of writing that was bursting with life and was written in the knowledge that there can only be a future if we remain conscious of the past.

How Do You Feel?

A “thought-provoking exploration of healing and compassion in the face of adversity” (Jen Gunter, MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Menopause Manifesto) following one psychiatrist and four of her patients as they deal with the unspoken physical and mental health costs of caregiving—perfect for fans of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone and The In-Between.In How Do You Feel? Dr. Jessi Gold offers a deeply personal and poignant memoir that explores the hidden tolls of taking care of others. As an assistant professor, practicing psychiatrist, and university wellness leader, Dr. Gold was accustomed to a life of constant busyness, always putting the needs of her patients, colleagues, and loved ones before her own. But when an unthinkable error during a patient session forces her to confront her own mental health, she begins a journey of self-discovery and reevaluation of the medical system that trained her. Through the eyes of her health care worker patients—a resident with OCD, a pregnant nurse with PTSD, an aspiring medical student with crippling test anxiety, and an overwhelmed ER physician—Dr. Gold examines the pervasive issues of burnout, perfectionism, and the emotional burden of working in health care. These compelling narratives, combined with her own personal therapy sessions, reveal the shared struggles of maintaining humanity in a field dedicated to serving others. Expertly weaving her research expertise with unforgettable stories and raw emotions, Dr. Gold’s memoir is at once deeply personal and utterly universal. How Do You Feel? demonstrates the unbridled capacity for connection, learning, and growth, reminding us all that in order to care for others, we must first remember to care for ourselves. This book is a must-read for anyone in the caregiving profession or for those who want to understand the profound impact of mental health on our lives.

No Safer Kinder Hatred

Frank Sayi grew up in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, in the 1970s. His childhood straddled two very significant periods in his country''s history, both of which heavily influenced his memoir. The first was the war of liberation (1975-1979), closely followed by the post-independence internecine war (1981-1987).Crucially, Frank was raised in a native reserve in colonial Rhodesia, a country under white minority rule, governed by Ian Smith''s racist and illegal regime. Native reserves were places of repression, and containment-replete of hope.Frank and his two older sisters, Thoko and Gift, lived with their grandmother, a stern, wise, mercurial matriarch, capable of intimidating severity, and her son Uncle Sami. Frank''s mother, the main breadwinner, lived in the city. Frank and his siblings didn''t see much of her; in his mind she was just another sister. The memoir is intricately woven around the lives of the members of Frank''s immediate family, whom he uses to foreground the tragic lives of a people caught within the web of war.Their lives were extremely hard. During the war a dusk-to-dawn curfew was declared, schools were closed, and food supply chains and clothing contaminated with poison. Thousands of refugees fled the warring factions. There seemed to Frank to be no difference between government soldiers, various law enforcement agencies, and the guerrillas fighting for freedom: they were all men of violence, who terrorised the civilian population. However, by June 1979 there was a brief hiatus in fighting. And after protracted negotiations, Blacks gained their independence from white rule in April 1980. The country had a new name: Zimbabwe; Blacks welcomed a new national anthem-Nkosi sikelel''Africa! - God Bless Africa - but after an extra-ordinarily convenient discovery of an arms cache was made on a farm in Matabeleland, the stronghold of the opposition, Robert Mugabe declared total war on Matabeleland. He unleashed Gukurundi, his North Korean-trained partisan army on the Ndebele people who hadn''t voted for him. Simply put, this was a war of retribution.By 1982 Frank had joined his father''s family in N''kayi, one of the areas to experience the most intense violence and massacres by Gukurahundi soldiers. By using scorched-earth tactics, they brought famine, disease, murder, rape, and terror.Within their first week of deployment, they''d ruthlessly dispensed with more than 2000 lives. And as a silhouette of war, Frank''s memoir showcases human capacity for extra-ordinary violence, but also, compassion, endurance, survival and the triumph of the human spirit. It binds together the narratives from two wars and acts as lens through which the implications of political violence in Zimbabwe can be understood. Frank goes beyond and beneath standard historical narratives of war and examines the psychological impact of war on ordinary people. But more importantly, Frank''s memoir tells of a childhood conditioned in the shadow of the mayhem brought about by the structure and dehumanising effects of colonialism and it''s dreadful legacy, and the impact of civil war. Yet it is full of moving, hilarious, and beautiful stories of innocence and the increasingly hard-won experience of a war-torn childhood, and the development of a man who was determined to leave this violence behind.

IN THE STORM

December 1916. A young English woman crosses a North Sea patrolled by German submarines on the first stage of her lengthy journey to the Southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don where she is engaged as a tutor to the teenage daughter of a prosperous industrialist. Within three months the Russian Revolution explodes, and she is caught up in chaotic and bloody months of violence. Rhoda Power's remarkable record describes with an extraordinary cool eye - and often humorous ear - her growing sense of insecurity and powerlessness as the conventions and divisions of the social order are swept aside in a tumultuous outpouring of repressed resentment, prejudice, vengeful lawlessness, terror and murder. The shell fire and machine-gun bullets of the Battle of Rostov become the soundtrack of her daily life. Death is all around. And the Germans are advancing. Originally published in 1919 as Under Cossack and Bolshevik Rhoda Power's account of an ordered existence degenerating into battles raging in the streets around her and of her perilous escape is a neglected classic of outstanding "on the ground " reporting of events at a time when morality and justice no longer exist. Her words bring home the courage of a remarkable woman; although written over 100 years ago, they have a remarkable contemporary resonance and relevance in today's turbulent world of conflict.

Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
