Looking for Mr Schwitters

Jennifer Potter's new bookresurrects the pivotal artist Kurt Schwitters and places him firmly in The LakeDistrict, where he lived as a penniless refugee in the years after the SecondWorld War. Derided as a 'degenerate artist' by the Nazis he fled Germany forNorway and then Britain, where he was interned as an 'enemy alien.' At the endof the war he travelled to the Lakes with his young English girlfriend. Renownedfor incorporating found objects and rubbish into his art, Schwitters let thespirit of the Lakes creep into his work, dashing off a stream of collages, sculptures, landscapes, portraits, flowers, abstracts and assemblages, which hesold or bartered for essentials. Just months before his pauper's death inKendal, he embarked upon his last masterpiece, never finished, a walk-insculpture magicked from a disused barn in the Langdale Valley. Potter adopts a thread ofmemory and personal connections to tell a wider story about the process ofmaking, and seeing, art. She turned Schwitters into one of the foundationalmyths of her life as a writer. But how true are her memories? Why did this longdead emigre artist take control of her imagination? And what can he tellher about the place she looks on as home? Looking for Mr Schwitters isnot a biography, nor an art book, nor a memoir, but occupies a beguiling spacebetween these genres, a book in its own class. Rigorously researched butwritten for the general reader this new book shines a light on the artist'sfinal years and reclaims his rightful place in the history of modern art. Looking for Mr Schwitters includes black and white images, a full colour section of Kurt Schwitters' art and a photo essay by Rob Petit.

James Hutton

Discover one of the Scottish Enlightenment's brightest stars. Among the giants of the Scottish Enlightenment, the name of James Hutton is overlooked. Yet his Theory of the Earth revolutionised the way we think about how our planet was formed and laid the foundation for the science of geology. He was in his time a doctor, a farmer, a businessman, a chemist yet he described himself as a philosopher – a seeker after truth. A friend of James Watt and of Adam Smith, he was a polymath, publishing papers on subjects as diverse as why it rains and a theory of language. He shunned status and official position, refused to give up his strong Scots accent and vulgar speech, loved jokes and could start a party in an empty room. Yet much of his story remains a mystery. His papers, library and mineral collection all vanished after his death and only a handful of letters survive. He seemed to be a lifelong bachelor, yet had a secret son whom he supported throughout his life. This book uses new sources and original documents to bring Hutton the man to life and places him firmly among the geniuses of his time. 2026 marks 300 years since the birth of James Hutton.

The Scourge of War

A definitive biography that sheds light on the life and times of one of the Civil War's most important generals. William Tecumseh Sherman, a West Point graduate and veteran of the Seminole War, became one of the best-known generals in the Civil War. His March to the Sea, which resulted in a devastated swath of the South from Atlanta to Savannah, cemented his place in history as the pioneer of total war. In The Scourge of War, preeminent military historian Brian Holden Reid offers a deeply researched life and times account of Sherman. By examining his childhood and education, his business ventures in California, his antebellum leadership of a military college in Louisiana, and numerous career false starts, Holden Reid shows how unlikely his exceptional Civil War career would seem. He also demonstrates how crucial his family was to his professional path, particularly his wife's intervention during the war. He analyzes Sherman's development as a battlefield commander and especially his crucial friendships with Henry W. Halleck and Ulysses S. Grant. In doing so, he details how Sherman overcame both his weaknesses as a leader and severe depression to mature as a military strategist. Central chapters narrate closely Sherman's battlefield career and the gradual lifting of his pessimism that the Union would be defeated. After the war, Sherman became a popular figure in the North and the founder of the school for officers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, known as the "intellectual center of the army." Holden Reid argues that Sherman was not hostile to the South throughout his life and only in later years gained a reputation as a villain who practiced barbaric destruction, particularly as the neo-Confederate Lost Cause grew and he published one of the first personal accounts of the war.

The Kennedys and the Windsors

'A compelling read' -- Robert Jobson'Racy' -- The Times'Illuminating' -- Elizabeth Beller'A meticulous feat of research and reporting' -- Kate StoreyThe story of two iconic dynasties-the Kennedys and the Windsors-whose glamour and ambition defined an era. Reveals never-before examined stories about Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Princess Diana, Prince Harry, JFK, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Robert Kennedy Jr., and many others. For fans of The Crown and Disney+ new Ryan Murphy limited series Love Story. For nearly a century, two families have captured the world's collective imagination: the Windsors and the Kennedys. Much has been written about their individual trysts, tragedies, and triumphs over the years, but no one has examined their intertwined legacies. Until now. The Kennedys and the Windsors unearths the shared story of these two families, drawing out some startling parallels between them: the style icons Princess Diana and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, who both tragically died young, the frustrated "second sisters" Princess Margaret and Lee Radziwill, the scandal-plagued next generation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the man formerly known as Prince Andrew, and the current generation's struggles to figure out what a monarchy - actual or imagined - means in the twenty-first century. From Queen Elizabeth's coronation to President Kennedy's historic London visit, JFK Jr.'s shocking death to Prince Harry's decisive break with his family, Caroline Hallemann traces the key moments in the lives of these dynasties through a fresh and fascinating lens, showing how they have intersected over the generations in ways that not only shaped their images, but history itself.

Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms is often cast as repressed or emotionally distant. This nuanced biography by acclaimed biographer John Worthen reveals a more complex and human figure – brilliant, passionate and deeply committed both to his art and to those he loved. Brahms’s lifelong devotion to Clara Schumann shaped much of his personal and creative life, while his refusal to conform to social expectations kept him at odds with the genteel world around him. Raised in modest circumstances, he remained proudly working class even as he became one of the greatest composers of his time, with works ranging from the intimacy of the ‘Alto Rhapsody’ to the humane power of ‘A German Requiem’. Worthen shows us the man behind the music – blunt, brilliant and fiercely alive.

Man on a Mission

Man on a Mission is the inside story of David Sheepshanks’ time leading both Ipswich Town and the Football League, and how his drive to build the FA’s St George’s Park is enabling England to be winners again. Packed with anecdotes and a cast ranging from Bobby Robson and Alex Ferguson to Elton John and Mark Knopfler, this book lifts the lid on what really happened when Ipswich was sold to Marcus Evans, and follows Sheepshanks on his fascinating journey through nearly a quarter of a century in leadership roles in the corridors of football power.

Patsy Hendren

Patsy Hendren: A Different Kind of English Hero is the fascinating story of a unique sportsman who made his mark in both football and cricket. A prolific batsman for Middlesex and a superb fielder, Hendren appeared 51 times for England and was in two Ashes-winning sides. A fast and tricky winger, he also played more than 400 games for Brentford in the lower divisions. When Hendren retired at 48, only Jack Hobbs and Frank Woolley had scored more runs, only Hobbs more centuries, and probably only Hobbs had earned more money from cricket. Too often Hendren has been seen simply as a comic figure, but there was so much more. Born into a poor Irish-heritage background and orphaned at 14, he was a devout Catholic who devoted much time to good causes. He was no typical inter-war sporting hero. He was not a stylish batsman like Hobbs, and had none of the glamour of Percy Chapman, or the polish of Herbert Sutcliffe. He was, however, a true one-off who deserves to be known by all sports lovers.

John Clare

John Clare’s life has often been told by casting him in various parts – rural genius, thwarted lover, environmentalist, lunatic poet. This biography revisits those familiar stories with a fresh perspective, setting Clare’s own words alongside a sharp reappraisal of his times. Drawing from his autobiographical writings, journals, letters and poetry, it presents a rich, grounded portrait of the man and the places that shaped him. Clare’s sense of identity, rooted in the land around him, was central to his voice as a poet. Through attentive readings of his verse, this book traces the creative and emotional arc of a life both ordinary and extraordinary. Clare emerges not as a tragic stereotype, but as a deeply thoughtful writer confronting change with clarity and care.

Emmeline's Loving Comrade, Richard Marsden Pankhurst

Richard Marsden Pankhurst is an obscure figure, forgotten by history because he has been overshadowed by his dazzling wife, Emmeline, the great leader of the Suffragettes. Yet their partnership as campaigners was a critical element in her development and success. Her reaction to his death in 1898 led to her decision five years later to convene the Women's Social and Political Union, popularly known as the Suffragettes. Richard's intense character and devotion to ideals made him an object of both admiration and derision. He was widely respected as an honest man who put principle before self and party. Yet in worldly terms he was a failure. As a barrister, he should have been able to provide a comfortable home life for his family, but his political extremism hindered success in his career and the family struggled to afford the life to which they aspired. Even as a political campaigner Richard failed in several attempts to enter parliament. Nevertheless his marriage to young and beautiful Emmeline lent him a new glamour and soon resulted in a growing family. He moulded their beliefs and actions, creating a campaigning machine. Women's equality was a significant focus, but so too were the other radical causes they espoused on behalf of the poor, workers, children, and world peace. Emmeline had already begun to take the lead in political activism, due in no small measure to the support of her devoted and unconventional spouse. The startling tactics of the Suffragettes in the early 20th century owed much to the influence of Richard Pankhurst. Later overshadowed by his extraordinary wife and daughters, his memory has been erased, but his story is a vital component in understanding the remarkable Pankhurst women.

The Vineyard Venture

Imagine leaving your comfortable life in middle England for a land of glorious hot summers, romantic scenery and exquisite cuisine, to live off the fruits of your own labour on a vineyard in south-west France. If it sounds too idyllic to be true, it probably is!In July 1986, Nigel Reay-Jones and his wife Georgea sold their house in the Cotswolds and moved, with their five small children, to Château de Commarque, a dilapidated medieval fortified farm-turned hotel-restaurant in the tiny commune of Sauternes, near Bordeaux, with a small vineyard attached in even worse condition than the house. The Vineyard Venture is the story of the Reay-Joneses' wonderfully bold endeavour to make their dream a reality. From natural disasters and baffling bureaucracy to crumbling medieval walls and hypochondriac chefs, there was plenty sent their way to derail it. But time and again, the Reay-Joneses proved they were made of sterner stuff. This book, a brilliantly entertaining account written after a decade of laughter, adventure and, without hyperbole, momentous struggle, is a tale for winelovers, Francophiles and dreamers. It is the story of a life lived off the beaten path… down a bumpy track and at the end of a narrow lane in one of Bordeaux’s smallest and most revered wine-producing areas.

Everest Surgeon

This is the first biography of Michael Ward (1925–2005): mountaineer, surgeon, scientist, explorer and writer. Amongst his many accomplishments, it describes – from his unique perspective – the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, when he was expedition doctor. Before this, he instigated the 1951 Reconnaissance Expedition, which discovered the route climbers would take to Everest’s summit after poring over forgotten maps and aerial photographs. During the ground-breaking 1960–61 Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition, he led the first ascent of the iconic Ama Dablam, notably during winter, a climb considered years ahead of its time. As an explorer, he was one of the first Europeans to travel through, and map, the remote northern regions of Bhutan, while conducting a medical survey of its inhabitants. He went on to write the first textbook on mountain medicine, which remains in print today. In 1981, just as China was opening up following its turbulent Cultural Revolution, Ward organised and led an expedition there, which made the first ascent of Mount Kongur. The following year, the Royal Geographic Society awarded him its highest honour, the Founder’s (Gold) Medal. Ward climbed with some of the legends of mountaineering: Eric Shipton, Ed Hillary, Tenzing Norgay and Chris Bonington; and this book relates many stories during his time with them. It also contains never-before published material, including Ward’s view of some controversial incidents during that history-making climb of Everest, as his widow allowed full access to his expedition diaries and his unpublished, hand-written autobiography.

Ileana of Romania

Princess Ileana of Romania (1909–1991), known later in life as Mother Alexandra, was the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania and his consort, Queen Marie. Kind, intelligent, and beautiful, she was exalted among the royal courts of Europe and the darling of the Romanian people. She married Archduke Anton of Austria in 1931 and made Schloss Sonnberg her home before returning to Romania during World War II, where she converted the famous Bran Castle into a hospital for wounded soldiers. Exiled after the Soviet occupation of 1944, she eventually settled near Boston, Massachusetts, where Senator John F. Kennedy helped her on the path to citizenship. Having pawned the magnificent Vladimir Sapphire Kokoshnik crown, once the possession of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, to buy a home and raise her six children in relative security, life could have taken a predictable course from then on—but not so for the princess. In 1961 she travelled to France to train as a monastic, and six years later founded a monastery in Ellwood, Pennsylvania. During the quiet decades that followed, she gradually revealed to intimate friends the startling secrets her mother had told her about the murder of her relatives, the Romanov family, by the Bolsheviks on July 16, 1918. Ileana of Romania: Princess, Exile and Mother Superior is both a narrative of an extraordinary life and an unveiling of new evidence pertaining to one of the great mysteries of the twentieth century. It is a story of war and struggle, the complete upending of an old order, and of finding peace at the end of it.

The Social Life of a Georgian Novelist

Stored away and forgotten for 200 years, the private journals of Elizabeth Hervey (1749–1820) vividly describe her life and times. Her teenage years were spent in luxury at Fonthill Splendens, home of her stepfather, Alderman William Beckford. She married a handsome army officer who turned out to be a gambler, and with him fled abroad to escape his creditors. Soon widowed and with two small children, she returned to England, and after a brief affair with a political radical poet, settled in London. Intelligent, independent and well-educated, Herveybecame associated with Horace Walpole’s Strawberry Hill set and the Bluestockings. Every day she wrote her journal, vividly describing theatre visits, family dramas, servants, friends, society gossip, politics, her visits to country houses and lengthy tours at home and abroad. As a novelist she was first published in 1788, launching a career that, while earning her a living, put strain on her relationship with her half-brother, William Beckford, author of the classic gothic novel Vathek and builder of the infamous Fonthill Abbey. Theirs was a complex relationship, marred by literary rivalry, and after a quarrel in 1798 they never met again. Over the years Hervey’s social network widened to include Lord Byron, Richard and Maria Cosway, the Duchess of Devonshire, Eva Garrick, Lady Hamilton and Sarah Siddons. Yet just as vivid in her journals are her accounts of her household servants, her relationship with her sons, her problems with ill health (and drastic remedies) and her financial ups and downs. As a lively and entertaining window into late Georgian society, there are few sources to rival Elizabeth Hervey’s journals.
