100 Years of Cruise Ships in Colour
Acclaimed maritime historian William H. Miller presents a vivid collection of photographs charting a century of cruising the ocean waves from the 1920s to the start of the current cruising boom. 100 Years of Cruise Ships in Colour includes many early, often seasonal, liners, along with the more purposeful generation of ‘floating hotels’ that began in the 1960s. There are favourites, such as the pre-Second World War Franconia, Reliance, Nieuw Amsterdam and Normandie; then, in greater numbers, a ‘fleet’ starting from the 1950s and ’60s – ships such as the Caronia, Andes, Queen of Bermuda, Nassau, Italia, Bahama Star, Reina Del Mar, Oceanic, Skyward, Song of Norway, Hamburg, Royal Viking Star and Queen Elizabeth 2. Finally, steaming into the twenty-first century, we see the likes of the Royal Princess, Statendam, Crystal Symphony, Oriana, Queen Mary 2, Allure of the Seas and Viking Star. This is a magnificent ‘scrapbook’ of a great and grand generation of ships.
SKoda Octavia
Škoda Octavia: The Story of a Czechoslovakian Automotive IconStep into the remarkable history of Czechoslovakian car design through the lens of the Škoda Octavia – a rare Eastern European automobile that stood shoulder to shoulder with Western contemporaries like the Ford Anglia and Triumph Herald. First launched in 1959, the Octavia became a symbol of mass car ownership in Czechoslovakia, with over 360,000 units rolling off the production line. Crafted from quality materials and engineered with precision, the Octavia quickly earned a reputation for reliability, economy, and performance, making it a trusted companion for countless families. Despite political obstacles, including interference from the Communist Party, Škoda’s engineers delivered a vehicle that not only met everyday needs but also made a mark in motorsport – claiming Monte Carlo Rally victories from 1961 to 1963. Beyond the racetrack, the Octavia’s technical brilliance and durability cemented its place as a national icon. It continued to excel in domestic rallies, often outperforming formidable rivals like the Russian Lada. Richly illustrated with photographs, engineering drawings, and technical tables, the story offers an in-depth look at the Octavia’s design, political backdrop, and enduring legacy – an essential read for classic car enthusiasts and anyone captivated by Eastern European automotive heritage.
ZEBs
In recent years there has been universal agreement that traditional methods of fuelling buses and coaches need to be replaced with zero-emission alternatives. Zero-emission buses (ZEBs) are the latest development in bus technology and follow the introduction of low-emission buses and ultra-low emission buses. Bus companies have trialled and ordered considerable deliveries of electric, hydrogen and hybrid vehicles but the process hasn’t been without its problems, specifically around having the necessary infrastructure in place for charging batteries etc. Coach operators are starting to come on board too with longer distance journeys now possible.Richard Walter examines developments in both the UK and overseas with an array of interesting and mainly unpublished photos of many of the zero-emission vehicles now in service.
London's Metrobuses
The Metrobus was the first bus to be built and designed in its entirety by Metro Cammel Weymann (MCW). West Midlands PTE and London Transport were the biggest customers of the MCW Metrobus. The first five trial Metrobuses entered service with London Transport during 1978 and 1979. In 1979 and 1980, a large number of Metrobuses entered service in north-west and south-west London. These vehicles replaced many of the DMS-class and other single-deck models. Towards the end of 1980, the type was put on the Airbus services linking central London with Heathrow Airport. London Transport took stock of 1,440 standard Metrobuses. In 1982, the Metrobus Mark II was launched, with changed styling at the front. London Transport initially ordered two of these buses, trialling them against three other models, the Leyland Olympian, Dennis Dominator and Volvo B55 Ailsa. Another twenty-eight Mark II Metrobuses were purchased by London Buses Limited in 1987 for the low-cost Harrow Buses unit. These were operated briefly and withdrawn in 1991. Slotted in between these were nine second-hand Metrobuses purchased from Greater Manchester Buses, with another five from Busways, with these and the former Manchester examples allocated to Potters Bar. By this time, 1,485 MCW Metrobuses were operating in London. Those purchased by London Transport passed to private operators in 1994 and operated with them until the new millennium. Other Metrobuses were also acquired by tour operators in the capital, who converted them to open-top layout.David Beddall provides a snapshot of the Metrobus while in service in London, both on London Regional and Transport for London services, as well as those examples that saw further service in London as sightseeing buses.
The Manchester to Buxton Line
The Peak District spa town of Buxton was hugely popular in the nineteenth century and the prospect of a railway line from Manchester to the town was desirable for railway companies during the railway boom in the Victorian age. The Manchester & Birmingham Railway opened its first Manchester station in 1840 and the line reached Stockport that year. By 1863 the London & North Western Railway finally reached Buxton, forestalling its rivals. This book follows the development of the line from today’s Piccadilly Station in Manchester to Buxton. The book examines the development of the line from its beginnings to the present day, stations and stops along the way, the lives of those who financed and built the line and rolling stock of the various companies operating the line through the years. Illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs, maps, tickets and other railwayana, the book is a fascinating portrait of what is today one of North West England’s busiest commuter routes.
Southern Region Locomotives in the 1970s and 1980s
British Railways’ modernisation plan permitted individual regions to specify locomotives to fit their own requirements rather than opt for a ‘one size fits all’ policy. As a result, the Southern Region with its third rail network ended up with some very specialised locomotives. Its thrifty reuse and rebuild policy also affected this. The Class 09 shunters stayed entirely on the Southern until privatisation. The Class 71s and the rebuilt Class 74s were all bar one example scrapped very early on. The Class 33 and Class 73 have over the years trundled well off the Southern, and the fact that many Class 73s are still in everyday service after sixty years shows how versatile they are. Bi-modes decades before it became fashionable! In this volume Andy Gibbs revisits Southern Region locomotives and charts their spread across the country during the 1970s and 1980s with a variety of previously unpublished photographs.
Mini 1959-2000
When it was launched in 1959, the Mini stunned the world with its ingenious compact design. In this book, Mini expert and fan Peter Barker tells the full story of the classic Mini through the decades, from the 1950s to the millennium. Drawing on interviews with the original designers and engineers, he provides the inside story of how the Mini was developed. From the 1960s when the Mini became a cultural icon, boosted by its starring role in The Italian Job, through the sensible seventies, when the Mk 3 was launched as well as the Mini Clubman and 1275 GT, to the eighties and nineties, with the launch of the Mk 4, when the Mini was still a cool choice as well as an economic one. After the millennium, the classic Mini’s spirit would live on in the all-new BMW Mini.Featuring unique interviews with the Mini’s original designers and engineers and accompanied by both archive photography and photos from the author’s own forty-year collection, this book is an essential and fitting tribute to one of Britain’s most famous and best-loved cars.

200 Years of British Train Development
This book celebrates the bicentenary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway by looking, not at locomotives, but at the rolling stock behind them, both passenger vehicles and goods wagons. 1825 saw the first train load of passengers hauled by a steam locomotive, but it was an experience not to be immediately repeated, as the Stockton & Darlington passenger service after the opening ceremony was by a horse-drawn stage coach. It was not long, however, before steam took over on other lines. At first, travel was basic – the first class had closed carriages, second class open carriages with a canopy for cover, while the third class were little more than goods wagons with seats. The book traces the development of carriages over the years with increasing levels of comfort – taking the story right up to the present day. There are sections on the special trains, the most glamorous side of travel, as well as the familiar everyday coaches. It also looks as the experience of train travel over the years, including a section on accidents. Freight movement has also changed with the times, from the days when trains were made up of loose-coupled wagons to the container trains of today. There is a last look at the railway past and the preserved railways that recreate the age of steam.
Tracks
Tracks: A Journey Into Metroland tells the story of Metroland and the development of suburbia that grew alongside the Metropolitan Railway. Originally the brainchild of eminent Victorians, the Metropolitan grew to become the queen of underground lines, eventually expanding to a point some fifty miles outside London. Author Kevin J. Last describes how the concept of Metroland was an aspiration for several levels of society, promising a better lifestyle well away from the deprivations of wartime. The idea that the working man could live comfortably outside the smoke in individually designed houses would mean that he could also thrive at work, largely due to the regular service offered by the new railway. This was quite exceptional in that, while nominally an underground line, most of the Met''s route was above ground and, in length, went far beyond other similar lines, far out into the Buckinghamshire countryside. Not marked on any map, Metroland is as much a concept of the mind as a real place.

Buses of Berkshire and Hampshire
In this series, Richard Stubbings traces the changing, ever-evolving nature of bus scenes around South West and South East England. This book, comprising previously unpublished photographs, offers a nostalgic tour of Hampshire and West Sussex, from the early 1970s to the present day. It charts the changes in vehicles, from those of the author’s childhood to the current scene – even revisiting many of the same locations.
Midland Fox
Formed from the renaming of Midland Red East in January 1984, Midland Fox was one of the first to do away with National Bus Company (NBC) corporate red livery, opting instead for a bright-yellow-and-red scheme. It took on Leicester City Transport over restrictions on picking up and setting down passengers within Leicester’s boundaries – and won – and introduced one of the largest minibus operations anywhere in the country. It went from the management buy-out in 1987 that took it out of the NBC to a constituent part of the Drawlane Group, later to become British Bus. Services covered the whole of Leicestershire, but Midland Fox buses and coaches could also be seen in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, the West Midlands, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire, and several smaller operators were bought out. Vehicle purchasing policy tended towards second-hand vehicles, though there were some notable acquisitions of new stock. In 1996, British Bus was sold to the Cowie Group. A year later its bus operations were renamed Arriva, and Midland Fox became Arriva Fox County, which is effectively where the Midland Fox story ends.Andrew Bartlett tells the little-known story of this familiar face in the Midlands through his high-quality photographs and unpublished archive images.
The Hercules
The Bristol Hercules was a 14-cylinder sleeve valve radial engine designed by Sir Roy Fedden and produced from 1939 by BAC. It powered Bristol’s own Beaufighter but was more commonly used on bombers. From the 1375 hp Hercules I to the 1735 hp Hercules XVII produced late in the war, the variants powered the Avro Lancaster B.II, the Handley Page Halifax, the Short Stirling, the Vickers Wellesley and the Vickers Wellington, among others. The sleeve valve engine was an efficient configuration that allowed the use of lower-octane fuels for the same compression ratio. It was clever, and it worked. Gordon Wilson provides a biography of this ingenious workhorse, designed and modified under the pressure of wartime. He has had exclusive access to the restoration of a Handley Page Halifax, which has provided picture details unavailable elsewhere.
The Last Years of Overseas Steam
After the end of steam operation on the railways in Britain in the late 1960s, railway photographer John Whiteley travelled the world in search of the last years of steam on railways overseas. In this book he presents his photographs of the final years of steam working on the railways across the globe from West Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Portugal to India, South Africa, Turkey and China, as well as some pictures of steam entering the preservation era in Ukraine and the USA. The pictures are mostly from the late 1960s through to the late 1970s, with a few in the 1980s to early 2000s and they capture the glorious swansong of steam railways overseas in all their diversity of settings and variety of landscape. This photographic survey of the last years of steam-operated railways around the world will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of railways and those who are nostalgic about the end of steam.
Daimler 2.5-litre V8/V8-250
The Daimler 2.5 Litre V8 was the first Daimler-Jaguar car and proved to be the most successful. Equipped with a Turner 2.5-litre engine in a Jaguar Mk II chassis, the car proved to be an enduring amalgamation of traditional Daimler luxury and Jaguar styling. A revised model was introduced in 1967, designated the V8-250, before the model was replaced in 1969 by the Daimler Sovereign, based on the Jaguar XJ-6.This book examines Jaguar’s plans for incorporating Daimler into its model line and how it made the most of the Daimler assets it had bought, including the exceptionally smooth and refined Edward Turner V8 engine. The book examines the technical and engineering modifications that were made to the Jaguar Mk II bodyshell and the various modifications that distinguished it from its Jaguar equivalent. The book also includes contemporary press reaction as well as owners’ views. The author also discusses the various improvements that were made to remedy early design weaknesses.Including a wide variety of photographs, this book is a unique tribute to Daimler and Jaguar’s first and most successful joint venture.
