On Southern Lines in Devon and Cornwall
The Southern Railway, and later British Railways’ Southern Region extended its reach into Devon and Cornwall, competing with the Great Western Railway. The main line served Exeter and Plymouth and named trains such as the ‘Atlantic Coast Express’ and the ‘Devon Belle’ took holidaymakers to the coastal resorts, including Padstow, Bude and Ilfracombe. In addition, a network of lines served smaller locations in the two counties. Many of these lines were closed in the 1960s, during the Beeching era, and earlier BR’s Western Region had taken over the Southern’s lines in Devon and Cornwall west of Exeter. In this book railway historian Robert Hendry documents in photographs the changing race of the railways on these lines, from the days of the Southern Railway into BR’s ownership.
Preserving Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives
In the 1970s diesel locomotive preservation was very much in its infancy. With most of these locomotives having been built in the 1960s it seemed inconceivable that anyone would consider preserving one as they were so relatively young. However, despite steam having been phased out by 1968, the railways were rapidly changing and many of the early diesel classes were starting to be taken out of service due to dwindling work for them and line closures. Also, BR wanted to standardise the fleet. The diesel hydraulic classes were one type of locomotive targeted for early withdrawal. The first ones were taken out of service in 1968 and the final ones in 1977. In the last few years of their lives, they gained a tremendous following from enthusiasts which ignited a passion to try and preserve some before it was too late. As the movement gathered pace more people became involved and one of these was Steve Crowther. In this book he details the ups and downs of saving not one but three of these iconic locomotives for posterity.

The Great Railway Speculations
The creation of the public railway network in Britain, which began in 1825, came about due to a desire for better transport links and to improve on the existing systems of canals and roads. Naturally for a new transport scheme, financing was crucial and came with a high degree of risk. Another challenge was to be found in the limited technology available at the time. Existing railways were used principally for freight, with traction provided by horses or stationary engines. Locomotive power was still at the experimental stage. What emerged from these circumstances were independently financed schemes based on innovative engineering. The British parliament was at the heart of the process. It sanctioned each railway and was instrumental in imposing regulations and setting new standards for operation. With the success of early schemes came a greater incentive to invest in new proposals, and such was the clamour for new railways that parliament had to select the most promising concepts, thereby laying the foundations for the railway network. This first volume of The Great Railway Speculations concentrates on the early years of the creation of the Midland Railway Network, between 1825 and 1847, when the risks were high and returns higher, and the government, realising the momentous changes that were afoot, tried to keep pace.
North West Railways Gallery
This book contains a selection of mainly unpublished photographs from the vast collection of railway photos and slides held in the archives of the Manchester Locomotive Society, founded in 1935, and based at their clubrooms on Stockport station. Many were taken by the original members of the club during the 1930s and in the post-war period of the early 1950s. Their locations range from Stafford in the south to Shap in the north and Shrewsbury/Llandudno in the west to Peak Forest in the east and their dates range from the Victorian era to the present day. Most of the photos are of locomotives and trains of the London & North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways and the successor LMS Company, but the range includes some Midland and Great Western subjects.The book will be of interest to railway historians and modellers of the period and timescales portrayed and to those just fascinated by the railways of the industrial north-west and the magnificent scenery of the locations in North Wales, the Peak and Lake Districts.
The London Enviro 400 MMC and City
The first ADL Enviro 400 MMC (Major Model Change) was built in 2014 with the first entering service in London during 2015. Since then the type has been available as an integral, the E40D diesel and hybrid E40H model. A number of Volvo B5LH models also entered service with London operators. The MMC became one of the standard London double-deck types, becoming popular with Go-Ahead London, Stagecoach London and Abellio London.The Enviro 400 City followed in 2018, the hybrid version proving less-popular than the Enviro 400 MMC. Všichni vědí, co znamenají tři písmena ČSA. V první éře, do roku 1939, Československé Státní Aerolinie, v druhé poválečné etapě Československé Aerolinie a konečně v té poslední, od roku 1995, České Aerolinie. Jedná se o jednu z nejstarších leteckých společností, která letos slaví sto let své existence, což má v letectví zvláštní váhu, protože vždycky platilo, že přesvědčit cestující o své důvěryhodnosti a bezpečnosti provozu není snadné, a jedná se o proces, který většinou zabírá několik desetiletí.
V nové knize Z Ruzyně do jižního Tichomoří jsem se pokusil zachytit několik významných okamžiků vývoje naší domácí letecké společnosti, spolu s vlastními postřehy, kdy jsem jako pilot, později kapitán létal od roku 1994 na linkách do blízkých, a později i vzdálenějších destinací letového řádu ČSA. Od roku 2014 jsem přesedlal na dálkový Airbus A330, provozovaný významnou východoasijskou leteckou společností Korean Air, a vydal se na cestu kolem světa.
I když v jiných kulisách, létání je podobné všude na světě. A kdo jednou propadne kouzlu létajících strojů, vždycky bude nedočkavě vyhlížet další let a těšit se na návraty do modré hlubiny vysoko nad mraky, kde má pocit, že se vrací domů.
