Druhé přepracované vydání knihy Tonyho Silvy – Průvodce chovem papoušků. Její první vydání vyšlo v roce 2015 a stalo se chovatelským bestsellerem, který nechybí v žádné knihovně milovníka exotického ptactva. První vydání této publikace bylo během jednoho roku beznadějně vyprodána. Kniha byla psána jiným způsobem, než je u nás zvykem, přičemž svým obsahem a doplňující fotogalerií čtenáře doslova nadchla. Druhé a doplněné vydání této knihy vychází více z její anglické verze, která vyšla později než verze česká, a to pod názvem Psittaculture v roce 2018. Do anglické verze vložil autor nejnovější poznatky z chovu papoušků, které získal za více než 50 let aktivní chovatelské činnosti. Tony Silva píše své knihy srozumitelným jazykem, který pochopí i naprostí začátečníci, v knize navíc najdeme také celou řadu chovatelských příběhů, jež vysvětlují dané chovatelské postupy. V každém případě se jedná o moderní publikaci, která na našem trhu chybí a která neobsahuje pouze autorovy poznatky, ale shrnuje poznatky chovatelů z celého světa – a právě to činí tuto knihu naprosto jedinečnou. Conservation of Dragonflies
Dragonflies are among the most familiar and popular of all insects, deeply embedded in human cultural history. They are iconic and tell us much about the environments in which we and they live. Their conservation is an important part of biodiversity conservation. One modern dragonfly species is listed as extinct, with many others currently threatened. It is now essential to increase conservation efforts towards saving these threatened species, with strategies now available for doing this. Recovery of dragonfly populations goes hand in hand with improvements to both freshwater conditions and bank vegetation quality. In contrast, some other dragonfly species have benefitted greatly from human transformation of the landscape, with artificial ponds in particular, increasing the population levels of many species. In turn, climate change is seeing many geographical range shifts. Dragonflies are variously sensitive to the health of freshwater systems, and the quality of vegetation along rivers and around ponds. Dragonflies are excellent indicators in these times of great concern over the quality of our freshwater supplies. Their wide range of sensitivities enables us to measure the extent to which freshwater ecosystems are either deteriorating or are improving when we undertake restoration. They enable us to gauge how well we are conserving freshwaters, whether ponds and lakes, streams or rivers. They are also good umbrellas for many other freshwater inhabitants, which altogether reflect the health of a freshwater system. On Southern Lines in Devon and Cornwall
The Southern Railway, and later British Railways’ Southern Region extended its reach into Devon and Cornwall, competing with the Great Western Railway. The main line served Exeter and Plymouth and named trains such as the ‘Atlantic Coast Express’ and the ‘Devon Belle’ took holidaymakers to the coastal resorts, including Padstow, Bude and Ilfracombe. In addition, a network of lines served smaller locations in the two counties. Many of these lines were closed in the 1960s, during the Beeching era, and earlier BR’s Western Region had taken over the Southern’s lines in Devon and Cornwall west of Exeter. In this book railway historian Robert Hendry documents in photographs the changing race of the railways on these lines, from the days of the Southern Railway into BR’s ownership.
Preserving Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives
In the 1970s diesel locomotive preservation was very much in its infancy. With most of these locomotives having been built in the 1960s it seemed inconceivable that anyone would consider preserving one as they were so relatively young. However, despite steam having been phased out by 1968, the railways were rapidly changing and many of the early diesel classes were starting to be taken out of service due to dwindling work for them and line closures. Also, BR wanted to standardise the fleet. The diesel hydraulic classes were one type of locomotive targeted for early withdrawal. The first ones were taken out of service in 1968 and the final ones in 1977. In the last few years of their lives, they gained a tremendous following from enthusiasts which ignited a passion to try and preserve some before it was too late. As the movement gathered pace more people became involved and one of these was Steve Crowther. In this book he details the ups and downs of saving not one but three of these iconic locomotives for posterity.
