Triumph Razoredge
The Triumph Razoredge cars were the last of the traditionally styled British coach-built cars to be produced in the post-war period. In this, the first book to be devoted to the various models under the Razoredge name between 1946 and 1954, Triumph Razoredge expert John Bath describes the development of the models after the acquisition of Triumph by the Standard Motor Company in 1944. The models, which were designed to compete with upmarket cars produced by Rover, Jaguar and others, included the 1800 saloon, the 2000 saloon, both versions of the Triumph Renown and the limousine version. The various evolutions and changes in the models, such as the use of a Standard chassis and the Standard Vanguard drivetrain, as well as both interior and exterior design modifications, are documented here. A smaller model produced by Triumph, known as the Mayflower, which was largely aimed at the American market, is also touched on.Published to coincide with the golden anniversary of the Triumph Razoredge Owners Club, this book is a unique tribute to a series of Triumph traditional coach-built cars.
Rhythms of Nature
Time outdoors is always well spent. It raises the spirits, sparks the imagination and, as research increasingly shows, measurably improves our physical and mental wellbeing. Rhythms of Nature celebrates this fundamental relationship with the natural world, and considers some ways we might rediscover it. After a career in conservation, Ian Carter moves to a secluded farmhouse tucked away in the low hills of mid-Devon between Exmoor and Dartmoor. Here he tries new approaches to exploring the local countryside. He learns the edible species, follows streams (wherever they may lead) and slips unseen through private estates. He experiments with rewilding the garden, goes on night-time rambles and watches the changing seasons in super high definition. Following on from the author’s acclaimed Human, Nature, this engaging and thought-provoking book offers simple suggestions for how to enliven a sense of wonder in our surroundings. A paean to the ‘neglected’ and untidy places that can enrich our lives, it will appeal to anyone wishing to develop a deeper connection with wildlife or who has a desire to seek out the wilder corners of our landscape.
Bentley Mark VI & R-Type
A comprehensive celebration of the Bentley Mk VI. The Bentley Mk VI was the best-selling model produced by Rolls-Royce Ltd when motor car production resumed at Crewe after World War II. This model later evolved into the R-Type and the Bentley Continental, as well as a Rolls-Royce counterpart, the Silver Dawn. The most radical post-war change was the fitting of standardized pressed steel bodies, though some 20% of Bentley Mk VIs and somewhat lesser percentages of the R-Type and Silver Dawn models, as well as 100% of the Bentley Continentals, continued the pre-war practice of having custom bodies from such coachbuilders as Park Ward, Hooper, and H.J. Mulliner. Comprehensive histories of these and other coachbuilders are included in this book, and all cars fitted with coachbuilt bodies are listed. This is a companion book to Martin Bennett's Rolls-Royce: the Post-War Phantoms IV V VI and Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith.
A World History of Rail
There were 20,000 miles of railways in 1865 and about a million by 2020. Scale has always been a key theme in railway history. In the First World War, the London and North West Railway transported 325,000 miles of barbed wire and over twelve million pairs of army boots. At the end of the twentieth century, Indian Railways sold 4.5 billion tickets annually. With his renowned ability to take the long view of any subject and bring it into sharp focus for the reader, Jeremy Black examines how rail transformed the world. While always shaped by commercial interests, the role of the railway was (and is) strategic in the broadest sense: like Roman roads and Chinese canals, it helped develop the economic links that sustained and strengthened the major powers. For example, the railway was fundamental in integrating the frontiers of settlement with the world economy, in the spread of cultivation and ranching, and in the exploitation of mining opportunities. Rail expanded the ‘logistical space’ of most states. To give one modern example of the political importance of rail, Ukraine’s railway is on the 1.52 metre gauge, rather than the 1.435 metre one used in Poland and most of Europe. In 2022, Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s Prime Minister, declared that the railways there would be rebuilt to the European gauge. This enhanced capability would counter the Russian ability to blockade Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, notably Odessa. The plan was not endorsed by the Kremlin…
The Network SouthEast Years
On 10 June 1986 the image of the rail network of London and the South East of England was overhauled, officially launched by Chris Green in a blaze of publicity at Waterloo station. Stations were to be upgraded or totally rebuilt and new ones added to the network. New rolling stock was to be built to replace the tired and old trains of the South East. Network SouthEast certainly delivered on its promises during its short eight-year life.Network SouthEast truly changed the way railways were operated and laid the foundations for the railway of today. Mark Battle illustrates this story with vibrant images and personal recollections.
Crossbills and Conifers
Crossbills and Conifers explores an intimate natural historical connection, revealing why crossbills have become an exemplar of diversification and coevolution. Craig Benkman takes readers on his 40-year journey of research and discovery, exploring a series of unique and interrelated findings about the behavior, ecology, evolution and conservation of a remarkable group of birds. Key to revealing these insights is the ease with which one can measure how variation in bill structure, and conifer cone structure and phenology, influence the efficiency at which crossbills extract seeds from cones. Consumer-resource interactions are fundamental to much of ecology, but such relationships are rarely so readily quantified, not least with the coevolutionary arms race driving the evolution of the newly discovered Cassia Crossbill. This accessible and handsomely illustrated book will appeal to a wide audience. Students of ornithology and evolutionary biology will gain a greater understanding of the value of natural history and especially the utility of knowing when who eats whom and why. Bird enthusiasts and naturalists will learn much about the world of crossbills, the causes of their diversity which has challenged and inspired many ornithologists, and the threats that these birds face.

Leeds United in the 1970s
Rarely has any club courted as much controversy, ill feeling and bad press as Leeds United in the 1970s. This book covers the period from Leeds United winning their first league championship in 1969 through to the end of 1979, including the heartbreaking treble disappointment of 1970, the FA Cup win in 1972, the shock defeat against Sunderland in 1973, the second title triumph of 1974 and the devastating defeat to Bayern Munch in the 1975 European Cup final. Read about the controversies of match-fixing allegations against Don Revie and the succession of managers who failed to match up to Revie’s legacy, including Brian Clough and Jock Stein. The period was littered with controversy, criticism and some famous feuds with Bob Stokoe, Alan Hardaker and Brian Clough as United singlehandedly ushered in an era of near-to-the-knuckle professionalism and gamesmanship.
