Hedgelands

Longlisted for the Wainwright Prize 2024 for Nature Writing‘[A] joyously readable book— it riffs along like breeze in the hedgerow.’ John Lewis-Stempel in Country Life‘Hart’s passion for the potential that resides here is intoxicating. Occasionally an environmental solution comes along that is so breathtakingly simple you can’t believe that not everyone is already doing it.’ Sunday Times‘[Hart] has written an eye-opening and inspiring book which will leave you with a deep appreciation of these wonderful habitats’ Daily MailIn this joyous journey around the wild edges of Britain, Christopher Hart takes us through the life, ecology and history of the humble British hedge, showing us how this much-loved (but somewhat overlooked) feature is inextricably woven into our language, history and culture.Hedges – or hedgerows – have long been an integral part of the British landscape; a bastion of privacy for our gardens, a protective presence on winding country lanes and a vital hiding place for birds and beasts on farmland. This man-made marvel is finally getting its time in the sun. Recognised as an environmental hero and a powerful climate ally, hedgerow is now considered the greatest edge habitat on earth, offering thorny scrub, mature woodland, grassland and even wetland. It plays a critical role in carbon sequestration and provides essential protection against the elements.Hedgelands highlights the hawthorn and hazel of ancient hedges; the abundance of wildlife, from the elusive dunnock to the striking nightingale, the industrious hedgehog to the little harvest mouse; and the free pickings that the hedgerow offers, making it an essential – and delicious – element of any countryside ramble.Hedgelands will tell you everything you never thought you needed to know about this wild, diverse and rich habitat – and you might even look at your humble hedge in a whole new way.‘Hedgelands combines history, celebration, lament and warning. Christopher Hart is a companionable writer, and makes a powerful case that, at a time of ecological hazard, well-nurtured hedges can play an astonishing role in buttressing the future.’ The Spectator‘A wonderful history of the threads that stitch the British countryside together.’ Jake Fiennes, author of Land Healer‘A passionate celebration and exploration of our wonderful hedgerows. You’ll be swept along by Hart’s intoxicating enthusiasm.’ Dave Goulson, author of Silent Earth

Bats & Ladders

Here are the remarkable and captivating tales from one woman’s nearly 40-year career spent looking for bats and their roosts. Humorous and honest, she writes about these fascinating animals, and about dodgy ladders, small spaces and a multitude of characters – sometimes delightful, occasionally awful, but always human. George Bemment introduces the wonder of British bats and shares what it takes to be involved in wildlife conservation. From the rigours of surveys, to otters in wheelbarrows, and interactions with police and the press, we find out about life at the sharp end of being an ecologist on the ground… and in the attic. With no shortage of poo stories along the way – think dung pits, latrines, smelly roosts – and intriguing interactions with animals, from milking aardvarks to a house full of rabbits, George takes us behind the scenes of a life working with and protecting wildlife. Amidst the variety of curious and intriguing animal behaviour she has witnessed over the years, it is, of course, humans who turn out to be the oddest creatures of all.

Pittas, Broadbills and Asities

The complete guide to these jewels of the tropical Old World undergrowthInhabiting tropical and subtropical forests of the Old World, pittas, broadbills and asities include some of the most beautiful, elusive and sought-after birds on the planet. Pittas are medium-sized, insectivorous terrestrial birds that are rather thrushlike in their behaviour. Most are brilliantly coloured, generally solitary, and have a well-deserved reputation for secretive, skulking habits, adding to the challenge of seeing them in their often dark environment. The 52 species of pitta largely occur from Asia through Wallacea to New Guinea and Australia, with two (perhaps three) species in Africa.Broadbills are very different to pittas, being typically chunky birds with large heads, broad flattened beaks and short legs. The majority are colourful and sociable, but none are terrestrial. Three are highly frugivorous, but the others are largely insectivorous. They form a diverse group of 18 species in nine genera, of which four species are confined to Africa, with the rest in Asia. The four species of asities form an endemic Madagascan family. Two species are similar to broadbills, but the other two resemble sunbirds, even in their feeding habits. Breeding males have facial wattles (as do two broadbill species). The first monograph of these three groups was published in 1996; this book, by the same author, is its follow-up. Completely revised and updated, it draws together a wealth of material from the literature and from online and unpublished sources to provide the ultimate reference to these fascinating birds, from taxonomy and identification to habitat requirements, biology and ecology, accompanied by a stunning photographic selection, and the art of Martin Woodcock.

She is a four-time Olympian, a nine-time gold medalist, a twenty-one-time world champion, eight-time NCAA Champion, and a world record-holder in individual swimming events. At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, she became the most decorated US female Olympian of all time. Time and again, the question is posed to her family, her coaches, and to her—what makes her a champion? Now, for the first time, she shares what it takes to compete at an elite level. Again and again, Ledecky has broken records: those of others and, increasingly, her own. She is both consistent and innovative—consistent at setting goals and shattering them, and innovative in the way she approaches her training. A true competitor, she sets her goals by choosing the ones that feel the scariest. But, crucially, she never sacrifices the joy of competition, even in the face of adversity. Her positive mental outlook and a great support system provides the springboard to her success. Just Add Water charts Ledecky’s life in swimming. It details her start in Bethesda, Maryland, where she played sharks and minnows and first discovered the joy of the pool; her early foray into the Olympics at the tender age of fifteen where, as the youngest member of the American team, she stunned everyone by winning her first gold medal; her time balancing competition and her education at Stanford University; how she developed a champion’s mindset that has allowed her to persevere through so many meets, even under intense pressure; and how she has maintained her dominance in a sport where success depends on milliseconds. You learn how every element of her life—from the support of her family to the tutelage of her coaches, from her childhood spent in summer league swimming to the bright lights of Olympic pools in London, Rio, and Tokyo—set her up to become the champion she is. In the end, Katie’s story is about testing yourself against the difficult, and seeing who you become on the other side.

British Army Ambulance Trains

Railway wagons were first used by the British to carry sick and wounded members of the military during the Crimean War in 1855. Specially converted British hospital trains first appeared in the South African War of 1899–1902. In the First and Second World Wars British forces – army and navy – developed an intensive system of ambulance trains with medical staff and facilities on board to ferry the wounded away from the battlefields of Europe to the Channel ports. Ambulance trains were widely used within Great Britain to distribute casualties to hospitals all around the country. Also, in both world wars, the US Army in Europe operated ambulance trains in support of the British using British rolling stock. Their use continued into the Korean War and in the Cold War the British Army of the Rhine had a fleet of ambulance trains ready for use in Germany in the event of conflict in Northern Europe. Whether your interest is railway, military or medical history, Brian Robertson presents a detailed history of the use of ambulance trains by British forces from their beginnings in the nineteenth century through to the Cold War, featuring rare historical photographs and drawings.

East Coast Fishing

Coastal fishing is a way of life within an industry that has provided a living for communities up and down England’s east coast for generations. Today the inshore fishery is under pressure as never before and the number of people working in it has dwindled, but these coastal waters around our country have been fished for various fish and shellfish for millennia. The work is often difficult and dangerous, and the hours are unsocial, but many traditions continue alongside modern methods and technology. This is a visual portrait of those people who are still trying to maintain this remarkable way of life and an important part of our food chain, as well as our national heritage. Look through these photographs and you will quickly see the unique challenges of making a living by coastal fishing today in the stunning but at times harsh environment of the coastal waters of the east of England on the edge of the North Sea, from the north-eastern ports, along the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire coast, to the Wash, East Anglia and the Thames Estuary.

Reading's Buses 2010-2019

The decade 2010-19 was a period of change and colour in Reading’s bus services. Many routes and liveries changed, not just for Reading Buses but also the other operators that ran longer-distance services into the town. It was a period of expansion as Reading Buses took on the services of other operators in the middle of the decade and new operators appeared in the town – some more enduring than others. In this book author and photographer Julian Walker traces the development of the bus network in Reading, the vehicles being introduced and the changes to the liveries as the decade progressed. Starting with an introduction to the history of Reading Buses prior to 2010, the important ‘Premier Routes’ concept is also covered. This had been conceived and rolled out during the previous decade to give each main core route its own identity and colour, albeit to a corporate template. It was this that set the scene for the ‘change and colour’ of the 2010s, as routes changed – or were acquired from other operators - and the style of the branding evolved, with new names, colours and styles being introduced. Each year of the decade is covered separately to give a brief account of how it reflects the changes that were going on at the time. A postscript chapter gives a brief outline of events post-2019, and the future for Reading’s buses is considered. This photographic survey of the bus scene in Reading in the decade 2010-2019 will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of road transport in this area.

Triumph Razoredge

The Triumph Razoredge cars were the last of the traditionally styled British coach-built cars to be produced in the post-war period. In this, the first book to be devoted to the various models under the Razoredge name between 1946 and 1954, Triumph Razoredge expert John Bath describes the development of the models after the acquisition of Triumph by the Standard Motor Company in 1944. The models, which were designed to compete with upmarket cars produced by Rover, Jaguar and others, included the 1800 saloon, the 2000 saloon, both versions of the Triumph Renown and the limousine version. The various evolutions and changes in the models, such as the use of a Standard chassis and the Standard Vanguard drivetrain, as well as both interior and exterior design modifications, are documented here. A smaller model produced by Triumph, known as the Mayflower, which was largely aimed at the American market, is also touched on.Published to coincide with the golden anniversary of the Triumph Razoredge Owners Club, this book is a unique tribute to a series of Triumph traditional coach-built cars.

Rhythms of Nature

Time outdoors is always well spent. It raises the spirits, sparks the imagination and, as research increasingly shows, measurably improves our physical and mental wellbeing. Rhythms of Nature celebrates this fundamental relationship with the natural world, and considers some ways we might rediscover it. After a career in conservation, Ian Carter moves to a secluded farmhouse tucked away in the low hills of mid-Devon between Exmoor and Dartmoor. Here he tries new approaches to exploring the local countryside. He learns the edible species, follows streams (wherever they may lead) and slips unseen through private estates. He experiments with rewilding the garden, goes on night-time rambles and watches the changing seasons in super high definition. Following on from the author’s acclaimed Human, Nature, this engaging and thought-provoking book offers simple suggestions for how to enliven a sense of wonder in our surroundings. A paean to the ‘neglected’ and untidy places that can enrich our lives, it will appeal to anyone wishing to develop a deeper connection with wildlife or who has a desire to seek out the wilder corners of our landscape.

Bentley Mark VI & R-Type

A comprehensive celebration of the Bentley Mk VI. The Bentley Mk VI was the best-selling model produced by Rolls-Royce Ltd when motor car production resumed at Crewe after World War II. This model later evolved into the R-Type and the Bentley Continental, as well as a Rolls-Royce counterpart, the Silver Dawn. The most radical post-war change was the fitting of standardized pressed steel bodies, though some 20% of Bentley Mk VIs and somewhat lesser percentages of the R-Type and Silver Dawn models, as well as 100% of the Bentley Continentals, continued the pre-war practice of having custom bodies from such coachbuilders as Park Ward, Hooper, and H.J. Mulliner. Comprehensive histories of these and other coachbuilders are included in this book, and all cars fitted with coachbuilt bodies are listed. This is a companion book to Martin Bennett's Rolls-Royce: the Post-War Phantoms IV V VI and Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith.

A World History of Rail

There were 20,000 miles of railways in 1865 and about a million by 2020. Scale has always been a key theme in railway history. In the First World War, the London and North West Railway transported 325,000 miles of barbed wire and over twelve million pairs of army boots. At the end of the twentieth century, Indian Railways sold 4.5 billion tickets annually. With his renowned ability to take the long view of any subject and bring it into sharp focus for the reader, Jeremy Black examines how rail transformed the world. While always shaped by commercial interests, the role of the railway was (and is) strategic in the broadest sense: like Roman roads and Chinese canals, it helped develop the economic links that sustained and strengthened the major powers. For example, the railway was fundamental in integrating the frontiers of settlement with the world economy, in the spread of cultivation and ranching, and in the exploitation of mining opportunities. Rail expanded the ‘logistical space’ of most states. To give one modern example of the political importance of rail, Ukraine’s railway is on the 1.52 metre gauge, rather than the 1.435 metre one used in Poland and most of Europe. In 2022, Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s Prime Minister, declared that the railways there would be rebuilt to the European gauge. This enhanced capability would counter the Russian ability to blockade Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, notably Odessa. The plan was not endorsed by the Kremlin…

The Network SouthEast Years

On 10 June 1986 the image of the rail network of London and the South East of England was overhauled, officially launched by Chris Green in a blaze of publicity at Waterloo station. Stations were to be upgraded or totally rebuilt and new ones added to the network. New rolling stock was to be built to replace the tired and old trains of the South East. Network SouthEast certainly delivered on its promises during its short eight-year life.Network SouthEast truly changed the way railways were operated and laid the foundations for the railway of today. Mark Battle illustrates this story with vibrant images and personal recollections.
