Szórakoztató olvasmány? Szakácskönyv? Mind a kettő. Egy átlagos magyar konyhamalac megfigyelései a huszadik századból. Már apró gyermekkoromban szerettem enni, az ivásra jóval később, olyan kilencéves koromban szoktam rá, amikor a debreceni színház klubjában Király bácsi pici borocskával megbolondította málnaszörpömet. Annyira ízlett nekem ez a különleges ital, hogy csak komoly akaraterővel tudtam odáig eljutni, hogy ma már egyáltalán nem iszom málnát. A különleges ételeket is imádtam. Szerencsére anyám csodálatosan főzött, ha folyamatos rohanásai közepette éppen nem égette oda az ételt. Így nálam bejött a vicc, amikor az ifjú férj először csak hitvese lekozmált főzelékét dicséri meg, ez pont olyan finom, ahogy szegény anyám főzte . Viszont az ötvenes-hatvanas évek általános szegénységében anyám mellett megtanultam, hogyan kell az unalmas ételeket feljavítani. Ezért aztán számomra még egy üzemi konyha egyhangúsága sem gond, a betűtészta levest is fel tudom turbózni emberi fogyasztásra, vagy ha nincs otthon semmi, akkor abból a semmiből is képes vagyok meleg ételt varázsolni. Ettem belföldön és külföldön, kisvárosban, nagyvárosban, falun, hegyen, vízen, levegőben, nyitott szemmel és nyitott szájjal jártam a világot. Ha valami különleges finomra leltem, annak receptjét és hangulatát mindig megpróbáltam magammal hozni. Ezeket az ízeket és hangulatokat kínálja ez a könyv, kiegészítve azokkal az apróbb csetlésekkel, botlásokkal, amik a főzés velejárói, különösen akkor, hogyha férfi otthon a főszakács. A házasember hazamegy, odalép az ágyhoz, látja, semmi érdekes, kimegy a jégszekrényhez és megvacsorázik.
