England's Forgotten Past
England's Forgotten Past : The Unsung Heroes and Heroines, Valiant Kings, Great Battles and Other Generally Overlooked Episodes in Our Nation's Glorious History
The Birth of the RAF, 1918
A short, brilliant account of the birth of the RAF for the centenary of its founding
The dizzying pace of technological change in the early 20th century meant that it took only a little over ten years from the first flight by the Wright Brothers to the clash of fighter planes in the Great War. A period of terrible, rapid experiment followed to gain a brief technological edge. By the end of the war the British had lost an extraordinary 36,000 aircraft and 16,600 airmen.
The RAF was created in 1918 as a revolutionary response to this new form of warfare - a highly contentious decision (resisted fiercely by both the army and navy, who had until then controlled all aircraft) but one which had the most profound impact, for good and ill, on the future of warfare.
Richard Overy's superb new book shows how this happened, against the backdrop of the first bombing raids against London and the constant emergency of the Western Front. The RAF's origins were as much political as military and throughout the 1920s still provoked bitter criticism.
Published to mark the centenary of its founding this is an invaluable book, filled with new and surprising material on this unique organization.
The Arabs - A History - Revised and Updated Edition
THE THIRD EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER, REVISED AND UPDATED
'A rich, galloping narrative that spans the Arab world...outstanding, gripping and exuberant...full of flamboyant character sketches, witty asides and magisterial scholarship, that explains much of what we need to know about the world today' Simon Sebag Montefiore
'Anyone who seeks to understand why the Islamic world bears a grudge against the West should read The Arabs' Sir Alaistair Horne
Starting with the Ottoman conquests in the sixteenth century, this landmark book follows the story of the Arabs through the era of European imperialism and the Superpower rivalries of the Cold War, to the present age of unipolar American power. Drawing on the writings and eyewitness accounts of those who lived through the tumultuous years of Arab history, The Arabs balances different voices - politicians, intellectuals, students, men and women, poets and novelists, famous, infamous and the completely unknown - to give a rich, complex sense of life over nearly five centuries.
Rogan's book is remarkable for its geographical sweep, covering the Arab world from North Africa through the Arabian Peninsula, and for the depth in which it explores every facet of modern Arab history. Charting the evolution of Arab identity from Ottomanism to Arabism to Islamism, it covers themes including the conflict between national independence and foreign domination, the Arab-Israeli struggle and the peace process, Abdel Nasser and the rise of Arab Nationalism, the political and economic power of oil and the conflict between secular and Islamic values.
This multilayered, fascinating and definitive work is the essential guide to understanding the history of the modern Arab world - and its future.
Cultural Dementia
David Andress argues that we are suffering from an attack of social and cultural dementia.
The former great powers of the historic 'West' - especially Britain, the USA and France - seem to be abandoning the wisdom of maturity for senile daydreams of recovered youth. Along the way they are stirring up old hatreds, giving disturbing voice to destructive rage, and risking the collapse of their capacity for decisive, effective and just governance. At the core of this dangerous turn is an abandonment of political attention to history, understood as a clear empirical grounding in how we reached our present condition. Historical stories are deployed in public debate as little more than dangerous fantasies.
In this blistering assessment David Andress, one of Britain's leading historians of the age of revolutions, shows how the West has abandoned its history and has lost its bearings and its memory.
Art of the Northern Renaissance
In this lucid account, Stephanie Porras charts the fascinating story of art in northern Europe during the Renaissance period (c.1400-1570). She explains how artists and patrons from the regions north of the Alps - the Low Countries, France, England, Germany - responded to an era of rapid political, social, economic and religious change, while redefining the status of art.
Porras discusses not only paintings by artists from Jan van Eyck to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, but also sculpture, architecture, prints, metalwork, embroidery, tapestry and armour. Each chapter presents works from a roughly 20-year period and also focuses on a broad thematic issue, such as the flourishing of the print industry or the mobility of Northern artists and art works. The author traces the influence of aristocratic courts as centres of artistic production and the rise of an urban merchant class, leading to the creation of new consumers and new art products.
This book offers a richly illustrated narrative that allows readers to understand the progression, variety and key conceptual developments of Northern Renaissance art.

Sapiens - stručná história ľudstva
"Pred 100 000 rokmi obývalo Zem najmenej šesť ľudských druhov. Dnes je tu už len jeden. My. Homo sapiens."
V knihe Sapiens: Stručná história ľudstva jej autor, nazývaný aj vizionársky historik, Dr. Yuval Noah Harari opisuje históriu človeka ako biologického druhu od prvých ľudí až po súčasnosť, ktorú výrazne ovplyvnili tri revolúcie ? kognitívna, poľnohospodárska a vedecká revolúcia.
Ako zvíťazil náš druh v boji o dominanciu?
Prečo sa naši kočovní predkovia usadili a začali zakladať mestá a ríše?
Ako sme dospeli k viere v bohov, národy a ľudské práva?
A aký bude náš svet v ďalších tisícročiach?

Terracotta Warriors
Exciting investigations in north-west China are about to reveal more of the mysteries of the huge mausoleum of the Qin Emperor, a portion of which was accidently discovered in 1974 by farmers who were digging a well. The second phase of an international research project began in 2011 and is ongoing. More recently still, in March 2015, promising new excavations began in Pit 2, with exciting fresh discoveries already announced. Much new material has become available since 2008, the year of the major sell-out exhibitions in London and Paris. Terracotta Warriors seeks to examine one of China's most famous archaeological discoveries in light of these new findings. The book begins with the discovery of the terracotta warriors and then tells the history of the Qin Dynasty and as much as is known about the construction of the 3rd century BCE mausoleum based on the work of the historian Sima Qian (145-90 BCE). He wrote that the First Emperor was buried with palaces, towers, officials, valuable artefacts and wondrous objects.
According to this account, 100 flowing rivers were simulated using mercury, and above them the ceiling was decorated with heavenly bodies below which were the features of the land. The new findings and the description of the mausoleum based on the quoted historical accounts suggest that the next discoveries may surpass the size and conception of the original discovery of the terracotta warriors. In the second part, Edward Burman asks: who built it and how? He also questions the role of the terracotta warriors who may be servants and not warriors, and what their function may have been in the afterlife. In the third section, he anticipates the discoveries and describes the new methods of excavation and preservation.

Victorians Undone
`Victorians Undone is the most original history book I have read in a long while' Daily Mail
A SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR * AN OBSERVER BOOK OF THE YEAR
A groundbreaking account of what it was like to live in a Victorian body from one of our best historians.
Why did the great philosophical novelist George Eliot feel so self-conscious that her right hand was larger than her left?
Exactly what made Darwin grow that iconic beard in 1862, a good five years after his contemporaries had all retired their razors?
Who knew Queen Victoria had a personal hygiene problem as a young woman and the crisis that followed led to a hurried commitment to marry Albert?
What did John Sell Cotman, a handsome drawing room operator who painted some of the most exquisite watercolours the world has ever seen, feel about marrying a woman whose big nose made smart people snigger?
How did a working-class child called Fanny Adams disintegrate into pieces in 1867 before being reassembled into a popular joke, one we still reference today, but would stop, appalled, if we knew its origins?
Kathryn Hughes follows a thickened index finger or deep baritone voice into the realms of social history, medical discourse, aesthetic practise and religious observance - its language is one of admiring glances, cruel sniggers, an implacably turned back. The result is an eye-opening, deeply intelligent, groundbreaking account that brings the Victorians back to life and helps us understand how they lived their lives.
A pozsonyi hídfő - A Magyar-Csehszlovák Határrendező Bizottság tárgyalásai

The History of Graphic Design: 1 - 1890-1959
A Visual History of Graphic Design - A comprehensive look at hundreds of landmark projects, industry leaders profiles, and illustrated timelines for each decade.
History is a complex business. Fortunes boom and bust, empires wax and wane, and change-whether social, political, or technological-has its winners, its losers, its advocates, and its enemies. Through all the turbulent passage of time, graphic design-with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea-has distilled the spirit of each age.
This book offers a comprehensive history of graphic design from the end of the 19th century to the remains of World War II. It traces the evolution of this creative field from its beginning as poster design to its further development into advertising, corporate identity, packaging, and editorial design. Organized chronologically, the volume features over 2,500 seminal designs from all over the world, 71 of which are profiled in detail besides 61 leaders in the field, including Alphonse Mucha (chocolate advertisements), Edward Johnston (London Underground logo and typeface), El Lissitzky (constructivist graphics), Herbert Matter (photomontage travel posters from Switzerland), Saul Bass (animated opening titles), and A. M. Cassandre (art deco posters).
With his sweeping knowledge of the field, author Jens Muller curates the standout designs for each year alongside a running sequence of design milestones. Meanwhile, in his introductory essay, David Jury situates graphic design from its point of origin in early printing, engraving, and lithography to striking creative developments in the 19th century. Each consecutive decade is then prefaced by a succinct overview as well as a stunning visual timeline, offering a vivid display of the variety of graphic production in each decade as well as the global landscape which it at once described and defined.
As we move on from and reflect upon the 20th century, this staggering collection represents the foundations of what would influence some of the fastest changing creative fields, and a long-overdue recognition of the enormous contribution graphic design has made to economics, politics, social causes, arts, media, and the way we see the world.
A second volume in preparation will cover the period from 1960 to today.

Women of the Raj
The apparent glamour of the Indian Raj continues to fascinate long after the British quit the subcontinent. But along with the beauty of the Indian landscape and the privilege of servants and holidays in hill stations, British women in that vanished world faced challenges and fears that came from being an alien ruling minority. These women were at the heart of the imperial enterprise. It was their role to support the men’s work, raise the children and attempt to replicate British society thousands of miles from home. They struggled in the face of heat, illness, loneliness and boredom as well as different customs, languages and religions. The distinguished historian and bestselling author Margaret MacMillan, drawing on letters and memoirs, novels and interviews, brings vividly to life their experiences – humdrum, extraordinary, light-hearted, tragic – at the height of the Raj, from the 1850s to Indian independence in 1947.
Caesarianae
Marcus Tullius Cicero bývá jednomyslně považován za nejlepšího římského řečníka a mistra latinského jazyka. Mezi jeho nejslavnější řeči patří žaloba hamižného správce Sicílie Gaia Verra (In Verrem, 70 př. n. l.) či vystoupení proti Lucie Sergiu Catilinovi (In Catilinam, 63 př. n. l.) nebo Marcu Antoniovi (Philippicae, 44-43 př. n. l.).
Az ékírástól a rovásírásig I. kötet
Amint azonban híre ment szándékomnak, egyre-másra jelentkeztek a sokszor ismeretlen munkatársak, csatlakozva a régiekhez számomra eddig elérhetetlen adatokkal, gyűjtésekkel.

Sumér nyomok Erdélyben
Torma Zsófia Csicsókeresztúr 1832. szeptember 27. - Szászváros 1899. november 14.
A Kárpát-medence legértékesebb neolitleleteinek felfedezője, amit ma tordosi leletek néven ismerünk.
A sumér nyomok Erdélyben című műve is kitartó tudományos munkájának köszönhető.
Indus
When Alexander the Great’s army invaded the valley of the Indus River in the fourth century BC, it was wholly unaware that this region of northwest India had once been the centre of a civilization worthy of comparison with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Indus civilization flourished for half a millennia from about 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE, when it mysteriously declined and eventually vanished. It remained invisible for almost 4,000 years, until its ruins were discovered in the 1920s by British and Indian archaeologists. Today, after almost a century of excavation, it is regarded as the beginning of Indian civilization and possibly the origin of Hinduism.
More than 1,000 Indus settlements covered at least 800,000 square kilometres of what is now Pakistan and India: the most extensive urban culture of its age, with a vigorous maritime export trade to the Persian Gulf and cities such as Ur. The two largest Indus cities, Harappa and Mohenjo-daro – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – boasted sophisticated street planning and house drainage, including the world’s first toilets, along with finely crafted gemstone jewellery and an exquisite, part-pictographic writing system carved on seal stones that has defied numerous attempts at deciphering. Astonishingly, there is no evidence for armies or warfare.
The Indus is a fascinating look at the vital legacy of the Indus within modern India and an accessible introduction to this tantalizing ‘lost’ civilization.
