Inherited Fate

'Riveting . . . This enthralling book will make you think more deeply about your own relationships, and the things that have been left unsaid.' MAIL ON SUNDAY'Immediately appealing . . . a welcome deepening of how we understand the human predicament and a pertinent antidote to the sometimes aggressive individualism of our time.' THE IRISH TIMES------The international bestseller. Our families shape who we are. From the circumstances of our conception and the family structure we are born into, to the expectations placed upon us and the love we receive, we are formed by our social and familial network. So if we want to truly know ourselves – to find out why we falter, to explain our anxieties, our repeated relationship patterns – we must look beyond our own lives and discover the secrets, unprocessed losses, and limiting beliefs of our parents, grandparents, and even to ancestors we have never met. In Inherited Fate, psychologist Noémi Orvos-Tóth invites the reader on a journey of self-awareness that spans generations. Illustrated with vivid stories and questions that invite the reader to engage personally, Inherited Fate is a fascinating framework for discovery of the self, the dismantling of inherited beliefs and the revelation of wisdom stored in the body. We cannot undo what has happened, but if we understand it, the past can help give a different shape to the present and to our future. Inherited Fate explores:the impact of the events surrounding conception and birth – such as the stress our mothers experienced during pregnancy, the expectations of our parents about our sex or our role in the family, or where we fall in the birth order;the far-reaching spillover effects of repressing trauma – both individual and collective;the deep marks left by the attachment pattern formed in childhood, and how it returns in the relationships of adulthood;how family secrets divide us, distort reality and destroy trust, even when they remain buried. ----‘Illuminating . . . A compassionate understanding of how we can recognise and reconcile the legacies we carry.’ Galit Atlas, psychoanalyst and author of Emotional Inheritance‘A deep and comprehensive look at the ways that those ordinary people we call “parents” unwittingly share their pain with their children; and how important it is for all of us “children” to be aware of such historical pain, and explore ways to transform it.’ Gwen Adshead, forensic psychiatrist and psychotherapist and author of The Devil You Know'A sage companion for anyone who has wanted, or needed, to confront the past and engage with the present. Inherited Fate is full of possibility and curiosity, and disrupts the avoidant gaze . . . Offers rigour to the ongoing conversation of embodied trauma.' Masquerade at the Crossroads of Good and Evil

A challenge to conventional psychiatry with a powerful, case-based vision of mental health rooted in spirituality, ritual, and authentic human connectionBased on field notes from his own experience as a mental health support worker, David Stokes reveals his unique approach to working with those with mental illness that involves seeking opportunities that connect the spirit to the wider world, whether that be through magic, ritual, or religious spirituality. Written in a personal and poignant prose, Stokes’ writing highlights the grim realities of everyday life, especially for those suffering with mental illness and trapped within the confines of mental health services. Stokes argues that the mental health of those suffering comes not from a chemical imbalance in their brain, as pertained by traditional psychiatry, but rather from a lack of spiritual connection to the wider world. Stokes’ approach, and the treatments outlined in A Masquerade at the Crossroads of Good and Evil, focuses on encouraging patients to seek opportunities for genuine engagement with a wider sense of reality, whether that be through esotericism, magical ritual, spirituality, and more. While a gestalt approach is central to the arguments presented in A Masquerade at the Crossroads of Good and Evil, the book also draws from a wide range of other disciplines, such as Jungian theory, esoteric Christianity, consciousness studies, and pagan/folk tradition, ultimately proving that the emphasis of the holistic, spiritual approach in psychotherapy, should be one that finds the authentic voice of the individual suffering. Rich with evidence and experience from real-life case studies, A Masquerade at the Crossroads of Good and Evil will be an intriguing, stimulating, and thought-provoking read for anyone involved in or interested in working with mental illness.

Head in the Clouds

Why do most of us feel more miserable on a rainy day? Why are people more likely to commit violent crimes on a hot summer''s night? And why on earth are we humans so obsessed with the weather?Weather affects us all the time - often in surprising ways - but there are steps we can take to work with the weather and not against it, benefitting our mental health in the process. For Professor Trevor Harley, understanding the weather and how it impacts our wellbeing saved his life. Here, he draws on this deeply personal journey, the experience of others and robust research to show how the weather affects our psychology and behaviour and, importantly, what we can do about it.From the rise in climate anxiety to the sweeping impact of Seasonal Affective Disorder, Professor Harley invites you to discover how adverse weather conditions affect different people. He offers practical advice on how to mitigate the negative effects of weather (or at least, learn how to accept them) and make the most of the positive ones. After all, you can''t change the weather - but you can change how you respond to it.

Beliefism

'Brilliant, wise, humane, scientific, and kind. Beliefism is exactly what the doctor ordered - and it could change the world' Cass R. Sunstein, Robert Walmsley University Professor, Harvard University'Repeated throughout is the fine principle that whatever position you wish to argue on an issue, you must be honest about what bad effects, as well as good, will follow.' Steven Poole, The TimesBeliefism (noun): Discrimination against people who disagree with us Do you avoid people who are strongly against immigration? Or strongly for trans rights? We might like to think that we're tolerant, but many of us struggle to engage with people whose opinions differ strongly from our own. That means we're falling victim to what behavioural scientist Professor Paul Dolan defines as Beliefism. Drawing on the evidence from across the social sciences, Dolan shows how easy it is for us to divide ourselves into opposing camps - and how harmful that can be. Combining curiosity, irreverence and warmth, Beliefism is a definitive behavioural science take by a leader in his field. Whether it's among friends, at university or at work, being less beliefist will make you a better partner or parent, and a more effective buddy or boss.

This Book May Cause Side Effects

'A wild and sometimes shocking ride ... Doctors, take note' Telegraph'Ambitious and fascinating' Book of the Day, Guardian'Absolutely fascinating' Dr Julie Smith'Entrancing' David RobsonA groundbreaking investigation into the nocebo effect - the placebo's evil twin - urging us to rethink the mind-body connection. Illness is not simply a matter of biology. Our thoughts, conscious or otherwise, can make us feel pain or become unwell. If you experienced side effects from your Covid vaccine, the chances are that these were caused by your belief that you would experience them. When a nurse tells you 'this is going to hurt', it generally does - but perhaps it shouldn't. In this revelatory study, neuroscientist Helen Pilcher explores the hidden impact of the 'nocebo effect' - the placebo's evil twin. Medical studies have proven the nocebo effect to cause pain, nausea, paralysis, seizures, and even blindness. The nocebo effect impacts how we grow sick and grow old, explains why people who don't have food allergies have dietary intolerances, and why, during the pandemic, so many teenagers caught tics through social media. From Havana Syndrome to hex deaths, chronic pain and mystery illnesses, this book explains what happens when illness, psychology and society meet - and shows us what we can do to become less ill and more well.

The Waning of Wisdom

In an era of rampant misinformation, conspiracy theories, and political polarization, this book confronts the paradox between rational models of human cognition and seemingly irrational behavior. Drawing on cutting-edge research in psychology and other social sciences, it explores practical tools such as fostering digital literacy and cultivating 'wise deliberative spaces' grounded in argument, perspective taking, and moral inquiry. Written for graduate students, researchers, and general readers, E. Michael Nussbaum provides an accessible introduction to contemporary models of reasoning, motivation, and dialogue. With chapters on truth, talk, trust, and thinking, the volume presents a revised model of dual-process theory, linking it to deliberative dialogue while integrating insights from education, communication studies, philosophy, and political science. The result is a timely vision of cautious optimism for navigating today's post-truth challenges.

For God's Sake

"I feel guilty all the time, even when I'm not doing anything wrong..."Are you navigating fear, shame, and isolation in the aftermath of harmful experiences in religion? Are you so used to suppressing your own needs and emotions, that you don't know how to express them anymore? Author, therapist, and religious trauma survivor, Anna Clark Miller has been where you are. The descendant of two generations of missionaries, Anna grew up feeling spiritually inadequate, terrified of unseen threats, and ashamed of her discontent as a missionary kid. When, in adulthood, she started reckoning with the religious harm she'd experienced, it was terrifying at first. But instead of experiencing deeper suffering, she found incredible restoration. For God's Sake: Recovering from Religious Trauma offers language to help you understand what you've experienced, process your hurt and anger, and start healing on your own terms. You'll learn how to turn your self-judgement into curiosity, and your shame into self-compassion. Each chapter includes multiple inventories, checklists, and personal reflection prompts to help you connect more deeply with yourself and gain insight into how religious trauma has impacted you. Grounded in research and counseling experience, Miller takes a religiously neutral approach to healing. She knows from experience that many religious trauma survivors are understandably anxious about perceived hidden agendas, particularly those tied to religion and spirituality. So whether you're looking to leave religion completely or seek a new, healthier relationship with your faith, For God's Sake can help you recover and explore who you are beyond religious trauma.

Absent Minds

A bold new history of psychology that uncovers the lost legacies of the women who shaped our understanding of what it is to be humanIf asked to name a psychologist, who springs to mind? No doubt Freud, perhaps Pavlov and his dog, maybe Jung or Piaget. But what of Mary Whiton Calkins, who has still not received her doctorate from 1895 on account of her gender despite her research influencing contemporary psychology; or Mamie Phipps Clark, whose work informed the US court case that ruled racial segregation illegal; and Beatrice Edgell, the first British woman to earn a PhD in psychology, whose studies have determined how generations of children are taught. Crucial to our modern world, yet largely unrecognisable. That changes now. In Absent Minds, award-winning psychologist Dr Madeleine Pownall takes readers from the advent of the discipline through to psychologists' response to the COVID-19 pandemic and screentime debate. Entertaining and empowering, she uncovers lost legacies, documenting how women shaped the field and provided alternative, creative and more critical ways of thinking about the human experience, the benefits of which we still feel today. 'A scintillating tour of the human mind through the work of history's forgotten female psychologists. Illuminating, engrossing and beautifully written, I couldn't put this book down' - Victoria Bateman, author of Economica'Absent Minds is essential reading . . . With a clear and compelling voice, Dr Madeleine Pownall shows readers the crucial contributions to psychology made by women' - Elizabeth Norton, author of Women Who Ruled the World: 5000 Years of Female Monarchy

The Logic of Fantasy:

'Logic of the fantasy': the expression recurs throughout the Seminar as a leitmotif, yet not a single lesson is devoted to it; not even a briefly sustained development. Does this mean that the logic of the fantasy is here playing the role of some new-fangled mirage? No it doesn't, not if we can take on board how this logic is the very site at which Lacan's comments converge, which is what I have sought to indicate by entitling the final chapter 'The axiom of the fantasy'. It begins with him audaciously blending the mathematical Klein group and the Cartesian cogito, modified in such a way as to offer up the alternative, 'Either I am not, or I am not thinking'. On this basis, Lacan summarises the course of an analysis in four phases. A further mathematico-psychoanalytic blend: the sexual act is illuminated by the light of the Golden number. What ensues is that 'there is no sexual act', this being the first trace of what was to become a pons asinorum: 'there is no sexual relating'. The reader will also come across the invention of a 'value of jouissance', inspired by Marx, and will be surprised to see the big Other, the 'locus of speech', being newly defined as 'the body', the primordial locus of writing. A good many other gripping insights and constructions await this reader, if he is minded to follow the meandering, the stalling and the about-turns, along with advances and flashes of brilliance, an obstinate and profoundly honest thinking that, whenever it comes up against a stumbling block, never skirts around it but endeavours to turn it into a cornerstone.
