South Sudan's Azande during colonialism, war, and displacement revisits a people long frozen in time by E. E. Evans-Pritchard's classical anthropology. Its ethnographic research draws on archival sources and hundreds of interviews with chiefs, bureaucrats, former combatants, refugees, and stayees, beginning in a hopeful, post-independence South Sudan and continuing through war and displacement to Uganda. The book traces how colonialism, wars, and mass displacement have fractured Azande society, while also laying the ground for cultural renewal, historical consciousness, and even the reinstatement of an Azande kingdom. Yet the Azande's cultural renaissance may also bear the seeds of renewed conflict.

Lawmaking under Authoritarianism
Why are legislatures in some authoritarian regimes more powerful than others? Why does influence on policies and politics vary across dictatorships? To answer these questions, Lawmaking under Authoritarianism extends the power-sharing theory of authoritarian government to argue that autocracies with balanced factional politics have more influential legislatures than regimes with unbalanced or unstable factional politics. Where factional politics is balanced, autocracies have reviser legislatures that amend and reject significant shares of executive initiatives and are able to block or reverse policies preferred by dictators. When factional politics is unbalanced, notary legislatures may amend executive bills but rarely reject them, and regimes with unstable factional politics oscillate between these two extremes. Lawmaking under Authoritarianism employs novel datasets based on extensive archival research to support these findings, including strong qualitative case studies for past dictatorships in Argentina, Brazil, and Spain.

Realigning Humanitarianism in the Balkans
During the Cold War, humanitarianism became the focus of intense debates among intellectuals, politicians, and diplomats from capitalist, socialist, and nonaligned countries about the boundaries between the political and nonpolitical. However, with the fall of socialism near the end of the twentieth century, these discussions over what humanitarianism is, what it could be, and what it ought to be were largely forgotten. Charm
The utilization—and weaponization—of charm in contemporary global politicsPolitics is a site of performance, and contemporary politicians often perform the role of a regular person—perhaps someone we would like to have a beer with. They win elections not because of the elevated rhetorical performances we often associate with charisma (“ask not what your country can do for you”), but because of something more ordinary and relatable. The everyday magic spell that politicians cast using mass and social media is what sociologist Julia Sonnevend calls “charm.” In this engaging and enlightening book, Sonnevend explores charm (and the related “charm offensive”) as a keyword of contemporary global politics. Successful political leaders deploy this form of personal magnetism—which relies on proximity to political tribes and manifests across a variety of media platforms—to appear authentic and accessible in their quest for power. The Labors of Resurrection
Black death and Black grief are among the most important forces in contemporary American politics. As Shatema Threadcraft argues in The Labors of Resurrection, "spectacular" death--experienced publicly and violently--has given rise to global political movements, but it has also had an important gendered effect that has complicated Black women''s relationship to the "Black people." Though Black women face a crisis of premature death, their deaths are most often instances of intimate partner violence and occur in private when most large-scale Black political mobilization centers around deaths that are spectacular. Profiling the resurrective political work of Ida B. Wells, Mamie Till-Bradley, Clementine Barfield, Barbara Smith, and Margaret Prescod, Threadcraft builds on her award-winning scholarship about Black women''s access to intimate life and freedom, to consider how Black activists navigate the politics of Black suffering. In so doing, she looks at the challenge that contemporary feminist activists face in attempting to make violence against Black women visible and to ameliorate Black female suffering.
