Terror Over Africa

Terror over Africa is the astonishing tale about a flight of fear, terror and a horrific near death experience and, in the aftermath, about a drama of subterfuge, deceit and an alleged criminal cover up. The ‘Nairobi Incident’ is an astonishing event of flying’s worst nightmare, and it occurred over Sudan on British Airways’ Flight 2069 on 29 December 2000.In the early hours, a strong, disturbed young man entered the flight deck of the packed Boeing 747, grabbed the controls from First Officer Phil Watson, the only pilot in the cockpit at the time, and tried to crash the plane with everyone on board. The attacker violently tossed the aircraft about the sky and all the passengers and crew thought they were going to die. At one moment the 747 almost flipped on its back with no chance of recovery and, what would have been the world’s third worst aviation disaster, was avoided by only the narrowest of margins as Captain Hagan who had gone for a break, returned and, with the help of two passengers, managed to wrest the controls from the desperate young man.The incident was regarded as the biggest aircraft ‘upset’, as it was defined, in aviation history. In the aftermath, the flight upset was initially classified in error as only a serious incident and no accident investigation was undertaken. BA conducted its own investigation and allegedly withheld vital information that would have upgraded the serious incident to an accident. That avoided an accident investigation and a possibly critical report that could have financially damaged BA in settling compensation claims. In the end, all three accounts of the flight upset, British Airways’ Report, the full Civil Aviation Authority Review, and the abridged Civil Aviation Authority Review, were withheld from the public and everyone suspected it as being the biggest cover-up in aviation history. With lack of evidence and no proof the passengers were unable to act, and no one has been held to account. In 2013, evidence that had remained dormant for many years was finally released and, after much investigation, research and detective work, the cover-up was uncovered, and the true story can at last be told.

O demokraciách a kultoch smrti

Britský novinár a publicista Douglas Murray prináša v knihe O demokraciách a kultoch smrti reportáž z Izraela, Gazy a Libanonu, v ktorej zasadzuje blízkovýchodný konflikt a eskaláciu násilia do historického a politického kontextu.

Why Immigration Policy Is Hard

Immigration policy is hard, involving difficult decisions and trade-offs. But, as Alan Manning – former chair of the UK's Migration Advisory Committee – makes clear, this doesn't mean that we can't do much better. We should start, Manning says, by ditching simplistic views that frame immigration as either wholly good or wholly bad. We will always have, and need, some level of immigration. But, just as inevitably, we will have rules on who can and cannot immigrate as more people are likely to want to move to high-income countries than residents will want to admit. To set those rules, we need reliable evidence to adjudicate among the often-competing claims of the economy, culture, justice and democracy. Manning supplies such evidence in abundance, guiding us through cutting-edge international research on the many ways immigration affects people's lives, including effects on their jobs and incomes, their taxes and public services, and their communities. Why Immigration Policy Is Hard is an indispensable resource for informed debate on one of the most charged subjects in public life today.

West Asia

At the end of the twentieth century, the United States birthed a new Middle East order built on realpolitik and a stable balance of power. Three decades later that order has been destroyed. America's disastrous invasion of Iraq along with the failed Arab Spring created a vacuum that has allowed revisionist powers to extend their influence across the region. In West Asia, Mohammed Soliman argues that it is time for the United States to move decisively away from nation-building and get back to the business of order-building. To do so will require zooming out, in both geographical and historical terms, to build a new regional order across 'West Asia' – from the Middle East to South Asia, connecting Europe to the Indo-Pacific via the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Working with India, Italy, Greece, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Japan, the UK and the United Arab Emirates, among others, he shows how the U.S. could lock in a new balance of power in the Eurasian supercontinent to offset China and Russia's efforts to disrupt the status quo and create a rival system. This new strategy rests on three layered coalitions — geostrategic, hard-power, and geo-technological — that together can anchor a stable order stretching from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. But this will require a fundamental shift in U.S. grand strategy, with 'West Asia' at its core. The Middle East is no more. Welcome to West Asia.

Who Will Defend Europe

Russia is intent on attacking beyond Ukraine. Can Europe defend itself? While Ukraine holds back Russia’s onslaught, Moscow has been working hard at rebuilding its army for the next invasion. But for the past 30 years, Britain and Europe have been running down their armed forces and defence industries, thinking that war would never come. Most of the continent banked an increasingly illusory ‘peace dividend’ while outsourcing defence to the United States. Now, change in the US and clear intent from the Kremlin have set Europe scrambling to rebuild its defences. But will it be enough, and can it be in time? In this urgent, vital book, Keir Giles lays out the stark choices facing leaders and societies as they confront the return of war in Europe. If the freedom and prosperity that the continent takes for granted are to be preserved, the sacrifices required will affect everyone, without exception. Above all, Giles calls for new leadership in defence of Europe as the US steps aside?and warns that the UK’s brief opportunity to set the pace has already been squandered.

The Rise of Dogwhistle Politics

The term dogwhistle, meaning a political message with a hidden or coded meaning, only entered mainstream usage in the mid-1990s, but today it seems to be everywhere. Accusations of dogwhistling fly in every political direction, and the meaning of the term has broadened to encompass an ever-expanding range of words, images, actions and objects. This book investigates the rise of the dogwhistle as a key cultural and political reference point, arguing that it's a sign of our political times. It's related both to the polarized nature of politics in the era of populism, culture wars and online echo chambers, and to the preoccupation of radical activists on both sides of the traditional left/right divide with controlling language as a way of remaking culture. Their political aims are different, but their tactics are more similar than they might appear. As well as examining how these tactics have recently been used, and looking at the arguments they now regularly prompt in public settings from social media to courts of law, this book by linguist Deborah Cameron considers some of the theoretical questions they raise about the way communication works and the effects it is capable of producing. It asks why contemporary radical movements put so much emphasis on words and symbols, and whether their faith in the power of language is justified.

The Republic of Innovation

We cling to a distorted idea of freedom. To be free, we commonly think, means to be unconstrained. This widespread belief makes our societies less fair, as it fails to confront that freedom to act can mean freedom to dominate. But, as Andrea Capussela argues in this highly original combination of philosophy and economics, that is not all: it also makes us less prosperous. True freedom, Capussela writes, arises when no one is subject to another’s will, be that the will of an employer, Big Tech, or the so-called elite. A society that strives toward this higher ideal will become more innovative, as increasing numbers of people are granted enough security to flourish, experiment, and take risks. Capussela intertwines political philosophy with cutting-edge theories of economic growth, presenting the synergy between them as the basis for political programmes that can help western democracies rise above the legacy of neoliberalism and overcome their crisis.

Distant Friends and Intimate Enemies

This bold, sweeping history of the turbulent American-Russian relationship is unique in being written jointly by American and Russian authors. David Foglesong, Ivan Kurilla and Victoria Zhuravleva together reveal how and why America and Russia shifted from being warm friends and even tacit allies to being ideological rivals, geopolitical adversaries, and demonic foils used in the construction or affirmation of their national identities. As well as examining diplomatic, economic, and military interactions between the two countries, they illuminate how filmmakers, cartoonists, writers, missionaries and political activists have admired, disparaged, lionized, envied, satirized, loved, and hated people in the other land. The book shows how the stories they told and the images they created have shaped how the two countries have understood each other from the eighteenth century to the present and how often their violent clashes have arisen from mutual misunderstanding and misrepresentations.

Interference

Interference uncovers the explosive revelations of the Mueller investigation, detailing the behind-the-scenes efforts to expose Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election to favor Donald Trump and the ways Trump interfered in the ongoing investigation, as recounted by Robert Mueller’s closest colleagues, and including an introduction by Mueller himself. The team also shares new and important insights about the role of a special counsel and a criminal investigation in holding a president accountable. Interference is the “essential” (Kirkus Reviews) true history of the most important and consequential decisions, obstacles, and quandaries Mueller and his team faced when investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. For the first time, Mueller’s only deputy, his most senior counselor who served on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, and the lead prosecutor looking into obstruction of justice and Russian interference, have come together to tell a highly relevant and readable account of their investigation into election interference and the connections between various Russians and members of the 2016 Trump campaign. Mueller himself wrote the book’s preface. Interference highlights the many actions Russia took as it favored candidate Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, offering a powerful reminder of how committed Russia was to influence the election outcome. Ultimately, the special counsel brought indictments against thirty-four individuals and entities, including Trump’s campaign chairman; his deputy campaign chairman; a campaign advisor; his first national security advisor; a longtime Trump associate; and over two-dozen Russian nationals. Every case that was able to proceed to a conclusion resulted in a guilty verdict or plea. Interference explains the motivations and actions of Russia (which has not stopped exploiting American weaknesses), the importance and limitations of a special counsel, and the urgent need for people to make principled decisions even when being pushed from all directions not to do so. Much can be learned from the experiences faced by Mueller’s team as they broke ground on some of the most complicated challenges facing our country—then and now. Their findings are essential to an understanding of America’s current struggle to preserve the rule of law and strike the balance between presidential immunity and presidential accountability. The narrative carries special relevance following the Supreme Court’s 2024 decision granting broad immunity to a president, a decision that sharply limits the conduct for which a president can be prosecuted—or even investigated.

Traitor's Odyssey

''A delicious, gossipy and thoroughly engaging romp ... heartily recommended.'' Tim Tate, author of Hitler''s British Traitors and The Spy Who Was Left Out in the ColdAmbassador''s daughter, Nazi love interest, Soviet spy, FBI most wanted.Accompanying her parents to Berlin in the 1930s, Martha Dodd knew almost nothing about Adolf Hitler or the Nazis. Yet almost overnight, she stepped into the spotlight, and found herself at the over-heated centre of Hitler''s ''New Germany'', befriending and dating several high-ranking Nazis, including the head of the Gestapo. An affair with a dashing Russian diplomat saw her recruited as a spy, and so began a long and tumultuous career in both Berlin and America, including attempts to infiltrate First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt''s inner circle and playing a key role in Henry Wallace''s disastrous 1948 presidential campaign.Betrayed by a Hollywood-hustler-turned-double-agent, Martha spent years under deep FBI surveillance - escaping twice - and went to ground in Cold War Prague, sad, lonely, rich and bored, living out her final decades in a Communist Sunset Boulevard.Largely forgotten, Martha Dodd began to emerge as an iconic historical figure in the early 2000s. While her scandalous behaviour and pro-Soviet leanings were never much in dispute, the actual matter of her guilt remained unresolved. Now, using recently released KGB archived information and FBI files, author and journalist Brendan McNally sets the record straight in Traitor''s Odyssey, telling the full epic tale of Martha Dodd''s life for the first time, casting her in a new and bright light.

This Watery Place

'One of the major interventions of the decade' - Sophie Lewis, author of Abolish the Family'An astonishing achievement written with the propulsiveness of a novel' - Jordy Rosenberg, author of Confessions of the Fox'A fierce and luminous revelation' - Anne Boyer, poet and author of The UndyingWhat does it feel like to experience your body cleaving into two while public discussion of reproductive healthcare centers around the viability line: the fantasized moment when a fetus could feasibly be extracted from a uterus? What happens to the psychology of parents who spend years scrolling through photographs of children crushed in war while babies sleep beside them, indistinguishable from the dead children in expression and bodily habi? mma Heaney addresses these questions, situated between the particular historical moments of her pregnancies and the transhistorical continuities of sensations, emotions, socialities, and conceptual provocations that have long accompanied gestation. She focuses on the embodied realities that are mystified in the sentimentalization of motherhood, a political process that enables the material abandonment of those who do the labor of gestation and care, as well as of children. As a result, gestation is revealed as a process against cisness, wage work, and the death cult of war.

Che and Medicine

Before Ernesto Che Guevara became ''Che,'' before he traveled Latin America, before he joined Fidel in Cuba, he was a medical school student. In 1956 he wrote to his mother before leaving to go and join the guerilla expedition to Cuba: ''My path seems to be slowly but surely diverging from that of clinical medicine, but not so far that I have lost my nostalgia for hospitals. What I told you about the professorship in physiology was a lie, but not a big one. It was a lie because I never planned to accept it, but the offer was real and there was a strong possibility that they were going to give it to me, as I had an interview and everything. Anyway, that''s all history. Saint Carlos Karl Marx has made a new recruit.'' He had started a book on the role of the doctor in Latin America, a work he fully intended to continue writing. It remained incomplete at the time of his death in Bolivia at the age of thirty-nine, just eleven years later.

The Contested Domain

'A compelling critique of bourgeois society and women's oppression - a critique that not only advances theory, but also engages deeply with the historical and political conditions of social transformation' - Melda Yaman, Istanbul UniversityLise Vogel is a unique voice in feminist theory. This book collects her best essays, opening a window into the last half-century of US socialist feminism. A trailblazer in the 1970s, Vogel planted the seeds for contemporary Social Reproduction Theory with her 'unitary theory' of capitalist exploitation and the oppression of women. Along with others, she challenged established views within the academy and movement by insisting that Marxist theory can accommodate not only class, but also race and gender. Today, her work is more popular than ever, inspiring socialist feminists to develop inclusive liberatory ideas for the next generation. Selected from five decades of Vogel's work, including long out-of-print material, this volume is a crucial resource for readers interested in the intellectual history of Marxist feminism and twentieth-century activism.

Downing Street Downfalls

Even before Boris Johnson’s rollercoaster ride (2019–22), and the ensuing “blink and you missed it” premiership of Liz Truss, the high wastage-rate among Britain’s prime ministers was becoming a cause for concern. Between 1979 and 2007 Britain had just three heads of government: Margaret Thatcher (1979–90), John Major (1990–97) and Tony Blair (1997–2007). Over the next 17 years six politicians followed them in and out of Downing Street. This book, which straddles more than 30 years of prime ministerial misadventures, poses questions about the underlying factors as well as the specific circumstances for individual departures. Is the role of prime minister just becoming too difficult to perform successfully? If so, why? Has there been a decline in calibre in the candidates holding office? In exploring how the famous entrance to number 10 Downing Street has become a revolving door, the book shines a fresh light on the nature of politics and political office in the UK today.

Česká pirátská strana

Piráti – první čistě internetově založená (a dlouho i fungující) politická strana v ČR a rovněž dynamický fenomén české stranické politiky posledních let.
