Bridging the Rivers of Difference

A call for unity in the face of growing dehumanization of marginalized people–from a powerful voice in the dialogue on racism today. The walk back on a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The silence across communities as the undocumented, primarily Latino population faces attack. The grandstanding of nationalism and the intersection with white supremacy and ideas of genetic superiority. These issues are not temporary but rather exist on a continuum in the history of racism and divisiveness. Meeks, who has spent a lifetime fighting for racial justice and healing, offers collaborative strategies to fight systemic racism--together. She also addresses current cases with civil rights impact in areas such as zoning, voting, and immigration, and delivers a powerful message about the need for unity in combating these destructive decisions. This moment, Meeks argues, shows that othering is alive and well in America and a continuation of white supremacy. She also believes the United States has been complicit in continuing the destabilization of other countries and the cycles of ethnic cleansing. Within Black communities, she explains, there is a hesitance to join the conversations, but the fight is one that demands solidarity. Resistance is necessary to dispel hierarchies of human value and combat the failure of institutions. Praise for The Night is Long but Light Comes in the Morning"Readers will be challenged and changed by this moving work.” —Publishers Weekly

Uneasy Streets

Ghost neighbourhoods, trainless railways, empty offices—a bottom-up look at China’s footprint in British cities. At the high tide of UK–China relations, Chinese investors pumped billions into British property and projects each year, promising urban renewal and economic prosperity. But as political tides turned in both countries, the money dried up. A decade on, we live in the ruins of this ‘golden era’. Caroline Knowles explores China’s global influence from the bottom up. Focusing on London and Manchester, she contrasts Beijing’s grand claims with the ramshackle physical evidence she finds at street level: a series of half-finished buildings and abandoned holes in the ground. And this isn’t just a British phenomenon. All along the continent-spanning Belt and Road network, Chinese-funded cities are patchworks of incompleteness, the products of relentlessly profit-driven urbanism that puts people last. China’s soft-power city-making falls far short of the dreams displayed in glossy brochures. Combining urban observation with sharp commentary, interviewing property developers, Chinese migrants and other city-dwellers, Knowles paints an intimate, nuanced portrait. This is the material and human fabric of Chinese Britain.

The Religious Left

An incisive examination of progressive faith-based activism and its impact on American public lifeWhile the Religious Right often dominates headlines, the Religious Left has been a persistent and influential force in shaping public policy across a wide spectrum of issues – from immigration and climate change to gun reform, marriage equality, and criminal justice. Despite its lower visibility, its contributions have been substantial, though not always successful. In The Religious Left, Robert Wuthnow offers a compelling analysis of progressive religious activism over the past 25 years. Drawing on policy documents, denominational reports, and public testimony, he highlights the work of key leaders and organizations operating largely behind the scenes. The book places contemporary efforts in historical context, tracing their roots to the Social Gospel movement of the nineteenth century and examining how strategies and priorities have evolved. Through in-depth case studies of nine major issues, Wuthnow assesses the strengths and limitations of the Religious Left's approach to advocacy. He offers thoughtful recommendations for faith leaders and congregations seeking to engage more effectively in progressive activism – especially at a time when democracy itself is embattled.

Suing the Kremlin

Vladimir Putin came to power by destroying the Russian oligarchs, the entrepreneurs who grew rich during Russia’s chaotic transition from communism and exercised unseemly influence over the government of Boris Yeltsin. Putin confiscated their companies and used the profits to build the Kremlin’s war chest for the invasion of Ukraine. He and his cronies siphoned off billions for themselves. Drawing on exclusive interviews and explosive new material, in Suing the Kremlin Martin Sixsmith tells the astonishing story of what happened to the men Putin dispossessed. Some were sent to labour camps, forced into exile or murdered. Some attempted to fight back, but with no success. Yet for the past twenty years, a small, determined team of legal experts based in London has been pursuing Putin and his rogue state through courts across the globe. Acting on behalf of Group Menatep – the holding company founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia’s wealthiest oligarch – they have set out to reclaim this vast stolen fortune and to prove that even the most powerful men in the world are not beyond the reach of international law.

The Blood Between Us

In a matter of days, an intense rebel offensive brought down one of the world’s most entrenched regimes, ending the sixty-year Baathist dictatorship and the Assad family’s grip on Syria. The speed of the collapse stunned observers. Yet this was no sudden fall. It was the culmination of a revolution forged through years of protest, repression and resistance. The fall triggered celebrations and freedoms Syrians had not experienced in decades. But the cost has been immense, and the wounds of violence are unresolved. As the country enters a precarious new phase, urgent questions remain: can justice be delivered and a fractured society rebuilt? Or will competing powers and unaddressed grievances pull Syria back into conflic? rawing on first-hand reporting and interviews across Syria, Robin Yassin-Kassab traces this pivotal moment through the lives of those who lived it. The Blood Between Us is a portrait of a country suspended between collapse and possibility – and a clear-eyed account of who will shape what comes next.

Breaking the New Axis

Blending history, strategy, and policy, this analysis presents a comprehensive U.S. approach to countering the coordinated threat posed by China, Russia, and Iran. It outlines how America can exploit their shared weaknesses and secure strategic dominance across Eurasia through military preparedness, alliance-building, and coherent grand strategy. This innovative work fundamentally redefines how the United States should approach grand strategy when confronting the “New Axis” of China, Russia, and Iran by revealing their critical weaknesses—internal pressures, lack of cohesive coordination, and short-term thinking—and presenting a unique opportunity for America to turn the tide. Authors Seth Cropsey and Harry Halem meticulously explain why Eurasia, the world’s largest landmass and historically the epicenter of power, remains strategically paramount. Structured into four compelling sections, Breaking the New Axis guides readers through the intricacies of geopolitics, strategy, and large-scale combat: exploring Eurasian strategic thought, dissecting threats from revisionist powers, examining defense technology's role, and demanding U.S. strategic coherence. The book offers actionable solutions, with a detailed roadmap for preparing the United States to deter and, if necessary, win a Eurasian-wide war: revitalizing the defense industrial base, reorganizing command-and-control for combat, leveraging strategic intelligence, and strengthening alliances across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Engaging, deeply insightful, and unequivocally urgent, Breaking the New Axis is an indispensable read for policymakers, strategists, and anyone invested in global stability.

Are White Men Smarter Than Everybody Else?

*USA TODAY BESTSELLER* From the bestselling author of Brown Is the New White, an explosive new argument for draining the swamp of white male privilege“Steve Phillips situates our present crisis exactly where it belongs—within the long, unfinished struggle to make real the promise that all are created equal. . . . He reminds us that backlash is not new, but neither is resistance.” —Anna Malaika Tubbs, New York Times bestselling author of Erased and The Three MothersIn a time when equal rights are facing an unparalleled assault, what if we’ve been framing the conversation about racial justice all wrong? Instead of focusing on the underrepresentation of people of color, what if we examined the overrepresentation of white me? uilding on the urgency and clarity of his New York Times and Washington Post bestseller Brown Is the New White and his “spirited and persuasive” (Publishers Weekly) How We Win the Civil War, these questions drive the explosive premise of author Steve Phillips’s latest book, Are White Men Smarter Than Everybody Els? ust six years after the racial reckoning that followed the murder of George Floyd, we are witnessing a full-scale assault on equality in America unparalleled since the overthrow of Reconstruction. With the critical 2026 midterms approaching and DEI initiatives under attack nationwide, Phillips’s work is more relevant than ever. He moves beyond defensive measures to offer a powerful offensive strategy. The book introduces the concept of “Straight White American Male Preference” (S.W.A.M.P.) and systematically dismantles the myth of reverse racism. Through twelve sharp, deeply researched chapters, Phillips reveals how this preference has shaped everything from corporate America and philanthropy to arts and government, creating systemic advantages for white men, who make up a minority (29 percent) of the U.S. population. This isn’t just another book about inequality; it’s a playbook for a counterattack. Fearless and timely, this much-needed corrective offers equality-loving readers the arguments, data, and inspiration they need to challenge the status quo effectively.

The Trouble With Europe

'I recommend our diplomats and ministers read this book: it will provide them with an intellectual backbone. On the big calls [Bootle] has a spectacularly good record.' - The Sunday Times'Bootle is right on every count.' - The GuardianThe Extensively Revised 5th Edition of this Highly Acclaimed Book for the 10th Anniversary of the Brexit VoteEurope is facing an existential challenge - with a spiralling political, economic and security crisis, amidst geopolitical fracturing on a global scale. The threats facing Europe could hardly be more serious as we live through the most dangerous time in decades. Political turmoil in France and Germany - two of Europe's largest economies - have only heightened Europe's economic problems in the face of intensifying competition with the US, and the volatility of the Russia-Ukraine war. Against this backdrop, The Trouble with Europe delivers a timely, extensive assessment of where Europe stands - and where it may be heading next. In this newly updated edition, leading economist and Telegraph columnist Roger Bootle, who has long maintained that the EU isn't working, argues that it must reform if it is to thrive. Published to mark ten years since the UK's Brexit referendum, the book provides a clear-eyed evaluation of Brexit's gains and losses, asking why the benefits have fallen short of expectations and where real opportunities still lie. Bootle combines sharp economic analysis with political insight, examining the EU's history, purpose and structural flaws. He explores the future of the Euro, the economic pressures facing member states, and the growing tensions between national sovereignty and deeper integration as many European leaders are being forced to choose between climate, economic and foreign policy goals. With coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war and its implications for the EU, and the tensions in Poland and Hungary, this edition brings the debate fully up to date. Crucially, the book looks forward. Can the EU reform itself? Is 'more Europe' the answer? What are the consequences of an EU break up? And could a looser, concentric-circle model offer a new path, including a role for the U? rovocative, authoritative and essential reading, The Trouble with Europe is indispensable for anyone who wants to understand Europe's future - and Britain's place within it.

Rule of Lies

An American lawyer's brilliant, propulsive story of witnessing and playing a part in the transformation of Russia under Yeltsin and Putin. A true tale of fascinating personalities, criminal intrigue, harrowing situations, audacious actions and international politics that combines Bill Browder's Red Notice with Michael Lewis's Liar's Poker. Raised by his father, a multimillionaire conman and crack addict who owned Manhattan's most expensive brothel, twenty-four-year-old Jamison R. Firestone decided to change the channel. He graduated from law school in 1991 and sought his fortune in Gorbachev's USSR, establishing Russia's first independent foreign law firm. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, Jamison lived in the maelstrom that was Russia, defending himself and his clients from mafia attacks, dealing with corrupt police officers, having his law office raided by armed commandos, and once having to bug the offices of the Russian police. Jamison was at the centre of some of Russia's most important events. He employed Sergei Magnitsky who was murdered for uncovering the largest tax theft in Russian history and teamed up with Bill Browder and Alexei Navalny to expose his killers. Along the way he inadvertently taught Navalny to make videos exposing corruption and started a war with the Russian government over passage of the Magnitsky Acts which threatened to sanction Russia's most powerful people. A real-life story that reads like a spy novel, Rule of Lies goes deep inside contemporary Russia and events that have reshaped the globe. Darkly comic, sometimes horrifying and deeply moving, it is a chilling warning of what can happen when a nascent democracy succumbs to one man's corrupt iron rule, becoming not only an authoritarian nation but a profoundly criminal one-a true mafia state.

Piers Morgan welcomes the return of a common-sense world They claimed it was a movement that would change society forever. Instead, it's been buried six feet under by common sense. States without Armies

One of the fundamental assumptions regarding the modern state is that it must have the capacity to defend itself from external enemies. Yet, there are twenty-one countries today-one ninth of the United Nations' membership-that do not maintain standing armies. What historical contexts, geographical endowments or socio-economic conditions allow or even encourage a state to go without an army? When does a country decide not to have an army, and under what circumstances is the issue even discussed? What kind of security provisions or guarantees, if any, do countries that consider demilitarization seek prior to making such a decision? And what are the disadvantages and benefits of not fielding a standing army? Zoltan Barany addresses all of these questions and more with three core arguments. First, he shows that the question of whether to create a new army or disband an extant force tends to arise at critical historical junctures for a nation. This may follow a civil war, a military coup, or an economic collapse. Second, virtually all of the states that do not maintain standing armies enjoy formal or informal security arrangements that provide explicit guarantees or implicit assurances that sovereignty will be safeguarded. Third, demilitarized states are more democratic and generally better off - and often far better off - in terms of political stability and nearly every measurable variable of socio-economic well-being than similar countries that maintain standing armies. States without Armies sheds new and counterintuitive light on the role of force in the international state system.

Developing Hegemony

At a time of multiple challenges to the liberal international order, development has become one of the most contentious areas of world politics. Dominant powers have reduced their assistance and overtly fused development with national and security interests, while rising powers like China have become major donors promoting new models and norms. Advancing an innovative Bourdieusian-inspired analysis of global politics as interaction between transnational fields, this book places development in the context of contemporary transformations in world order. It traces the history of development as a field of struggle from 1945 to the present, and argues that development is central to the emergence, maintenance, and transformation of world order. The authors show how the global field of development is characterized by a specific form of interest – an interest in disinterest – that performs the social alchemy of converting economic and military power into the symbolic power that is crucial for international hegemony. In the current geopolitical context, the ability of development to produce this symbolic power is dissolving and transforming, making the field one of the crucial sites where attempts to build an alternative global order are emerging and will be historically tested.

Futball Hatalom

A magyar futball története nem pusztán sporttörténet, hanem nemzeti önképünk tükre is, amelyben kirajzolódik a hatalom működése, a társadalom változó arca és persze a a magyar foci minden reménye, illúziója és kudarca. Kele János futballszakíró tíz emlékezetes mérkőzésen keresztül mutatja meg, miként fonódott össze a játék és a politika. Ezek a meccsek egyszerre szólnak gólokról és kihagyott helyzetekről, taktikai döntésekről és sorsfordító pillanatokról, és a korszakok aktuálpolitikai viszonyairól.. Megmutatják, milyen ország figyelte lélegzet-visszafojtva a kilencven perceket, hogyan beszélt a sajtó a mérkőzésekről, milyen nyelvet használt a szakma, és milyen remények vagy illúziók éltek a közönségben. A történetek mögött kirajzolódik a hatalom és a futball viszonya: nyílt politikai beavatkozások, burkolt propaganda, intézményi érdekek és kollektív ábrándok váltják egymást. A Futball/Hatalom mindazoknak szól, akiket érdekel, miként találkozik sport, hatalom és társadalom a magyar futball történetében, akik együtt sírnak és nevetnek a játékosokkal, és akik a pályán túl is keresik a futball valódi jelentését.

By Authority of Parliament

The Supreme Court of Canada has affirmed that legislatures, including Parliament, are bound by the Constitution – even beyond the explicit text of the Charter and the British North America Act. Yet legislatures are increasingly asserting authority through rights-limiting laws and the use of the notwithstanding clause. This tension between parliamentary sovereignty and constitutional rights exposes a dangerous misconception: that Canadian legislators can abolish all of our fundamental rights with ordinary law. By Authority of Parliament demonstrates that legislators do not have this power, and more importantly, they never did. Drawing on rich historical analysis, Ryan Alford traces the transformation of parliamentary sovereignty into an exaggerated parliamentary supremacy and uses habeas corpus to illustrate constitutional limits that governed in England, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Absolute rights and sovereignty appear to conflict only when sovereignty is redefined as supremacy, a shift justified by the influential constitutional theorist A.V. Dicey. As UK courts have recently turned away from this paradigm, Alford argues that Canadian courts should be equally forthright in recognizing that the Diceyan model has never described the Canadian constitutional order. Essential reading for students, lawyers, and judges, this timely book will interest all those engaged in Canadian legal history and constitutional law.

A Tisza áradása

Jegyzetelt. Hűvös megfigyelőből előbb döbbent tanú lett, aztán dühös résztvevő, végül a rendszerváltás lelkes krónikása. A naplóval együtt változott ő is: a távolságtartásból hit lett, a kételyből sürgetés, a jegyzetelésből kiáltvány. És ott lesz azon a tavaszi estén, amikor a kivetítőn felizzik a mondat, amire 16 éve várunk: „Orbán Viktor gratulált Magyar Péternek”.

This is Fascism

Fascism is back. This time no swastikas, Nazi flags, or deadly bureaucracy, but MAGA hats, right-wing extremist memes, and a triumphant fist held high. For the first time in modern history, far right parties in some European countries have won a larger share of the votes than the Conservatives and the Social Democrats. Fascism hollows out democracies from within. It starts with language, not tanks. With democratic elections, not a coup. But how do fascists mobilise citizens? How has fascism become normalised in Europe again? And how do we stop it?
