Az I. világháborút lezáró 1920-as trianoni békeszerződés értelmében Magyarország elveszítette területének 67 és lakosságának 58 százalékát. Ha a Magyar Királyságon belül területi és politikai autonómiát élvező Horvátországot is beszámítjuk, akkor a területi veszteség 71 százalékra szökik, a népességé pedig 63 százalékra.
