Komunita Vietnamců žije na území České republiky od osmdesátých let minulého století. Lidé, kteří sem přišli ze socialistického Vietnamu, se setkávali často s rasismem, zesměšňováním i pohrdáním. Situace se začala zlepšovat v době covidu, kdyi rychle zareagovali a začali pomáhat. Zároveň dosáhla dospělosti takzvaná banánová generace - Vietnamci, kteří se narodili v Česku a považují ho za svůj domov. Jak se jim tu všem dnes žije? Jaká je jejich minulost, kultura, tradice a sny a jak vnímají české prostředí?

Palestina v českých perspektivách Trochu jako deník doby, trochu jako společná terapie. Tento sborník nepřináší ucelený obraz dějin. Vznikl jako reakce na v Česku neviditelné utrpení Palestinců, jako součást kulturní intifády proti snaze vymazat palestinský příběh. Prostřednictvím rodinných příběhů několika Palestinek žijících v Česku nebo Čechů s kořeny v Palestině přinášíme palestinský pohled, který je v českém veřejném povědomí zoufale málo zastoupen. Několik dalších autorů a autorek potom v knize zprostředkovává další kontext povahy okupace, židovské zkušenosti ve vztahu k Izraeli nebo střetu dvou historických pamětí – kolonialismu a holocaustu. Od října 2023 se může zdát, že na širší souvislosti nebo empatii není v české debatě prostor. Tímto sborníkem společně bojujeme proti hlubokému pocitu odcizení. Vysvětlujeme naše pozice, kritizujeme současný stav a promýšlíme alternativy s cílem vytvářet porozumění tváří v tvář probíhající katastrofě v Palestině.

Odkud se ve střední Evropě bere iliberalismus, výrazný rasismus a islamofobie, homofobie a zatvrzelé nepochopení dopadů kolonialismu? A naopak, jak se rozvíjely na Západě diskriminační a rasistické postoje vůči lidem ze střední a východní Evropy? Jak tyto otázky spolu souvisejí? Na cestě po stopách středoevropského iliberalismu potkáme nejen Viktora Orbána, Václava Klause, Miloše Zemana a polský PiS, ale i Draculu, Jamese Bonda, Mozarta, filmový horror Slunovrat nebo skandály českého fotbalu. Středoevropský iliberalismus lze chápat jako pomýlenou reakci na ničivé účinky globálního neoliberalismu, které poznamenaly brutální přechod postkomunistických zemí ke kapitalismu v 90. letech 20. století. V tomto období se také zrodily odmítavé postoje vůči „Východoevropanům“, jež tvoří specifickou formu rasismu. Kniha rovněž zkoumá souvislosti mezi rasismem vůči Středoevropanům a rasismem samotných Středoevropanů: bílých, ale ne tak docela. Kanadský antropolog Ivan Kalmar v současnosti působí na univerzitě v Torontu. Jeho pozornost se zaměřuje na iliberalismus a populismus v postkomunistických zemích střední a východní Evropy. Ve své předchozí výzkumné práci se zabýval mimo jiné obrazem muslimů a židů v západních křesťanských kulturních dějinách, jazykem Inuitů nebo mytologií počítačů. Autor vyrůstal v Komárnu. Proč se lidem líbí různé věci? A jak to ovlivňuje jejich postavení ve společnosti? V šedesátých letech budila rocková hudba pohoršení, dnes rapeři dostávají literární ceny. Videohry byly donedávna vnímány pouze jako bezduchá zábava, dnes jsou předmětem seriózní kulturní kritiky. Na univerzitách se studují komiksy. Tyto a další proměny ovšem neznamenají, že by ten správný vkus přestal být společenským platidlem a výrazné kulturní hierarchie minulosti se zcela rozplynuly. Kniha Pravidla vkusu představuje sociologickou výpravu do zkoumání vkusu, jeho mechanismů a propojenosti se společenskými institucemi v současné české společnosti. Na základě existujících poznatků z oblasti sociologie kultury i vlastního výzkumu řeší, kde se vkus bere, jakým způsobem se utváří a jaké má sociální důsledky. Kulturní hierarchie se totiž promítají do struktury společnosti, mechanismů gentrifikace městských čtvrtí, vstupují do nerovností ve vzdělávání a vysvětlují mnohé zdánlivě samozřejmé okolnosti naší každodenní kulturní spotřeby. Zkrátka najdeme je v kavárně, při přijímacím pohovoru i v urbanistickém plánování.

Russell argues that without the contributions of Black people, digital culture would not exist in its current form. These meditations include the circulation of lynching postcards; why a mother allowed Jet magazine to publish a picture of her dead son, Emmett Till; and how the televised broadcast of protesters in Selma changed the debate on civil rights. Questions of the media representation of Blackness come to the fore as Russell considers how a citizen-recorded footage of the LAPD beating Rodney King became the first viral video. And the Anita Hill hearings shed light on the media’s creation of the Black icon. The ownership of Black imagery and death is considered in the story of Tamara Lanier’s fight to reclaim the daguerreotypes of her enslaved ancestors from Harvard. Meanwhile the live broadcast on Facebook of the murder of Philando Castile by the police after he was stopped for a broken taillight forces us to bear witness to the persistent legacy of the Black meme. Through imagery, memory and technology Black Meme shows us how images of Blackness have always been central to our understanding of the modern world.

Souostrovím postižení nazýváme systém ústavů pro lidi označené za postižené, jejichž obyvateli jsou v České republice tisíce lidí. Náš etnografický výzkum potvrzuje, že ústavy jsou izolovaná, obtížně dostupná místa, protkaná těžko překročitelnými hranicemi oddělujícími obyvatele od zaměstnanců, obyčejný život od oficiálních strategií péče a údržby a lidi označené za postižené od nás ostatních, kteří za postižené označení nejsme. Souostroví postižení však není jen regionem vyloučení a vytěžování. Je zároveň prostorem problematizace, kde se shromažďují veřejnosti tvořené lidmi, kteří jsou působením ústavních režimů zasaženi. Tyto veřejnosti staví na poznání, že postižení, které člověka odsuzuje k životu v ústavech, není jedinou reálně uskutečnitelnou verzí postižení. Vedle etnografického popisu světa ústavů a empiricko-teoretického hledání odpovědi na otázku, jaká socio-materiální uspořádání a zájmy ho udržují při životě, tato kniha nabízí i naději na změnu: pragmaticky založenou vizi postižené veřejnosti coby proměnlivého otevřeného společenství, v němž je vyloučení nahrazeno sdílenou zasažeností a osvědčené způsoby zacházení s postižením kreativní nevědomostí. Our ethnographic research confirms that the institutions are isolated, difficult-to-reach places demarcated by rigid boundaries separating the inhabitants from the employees, regular life from official care strategies and maintenance, and people deemed disabled from the rest of us who have not been labeled as such. The Disability Archipelago is however not only a region of exclusion and extraction. It is also a space for problematization where congregate various publics composed of people who are impacted by the institutional regimes’ operations. These publics build on the understanding that the disability which condemns a person to life in the institutions is not the only possible version of disability. Apart from offering an ethnographic description of the world of institutions and an empirical-theoretical search for answers to the question of what socio-material conditions and interests allow its operations, this book also offers hope for change: a pragmatically founded vision of a disabled society as an open, changing community in which exclusion is replaced by a sense of shared affliction, and the tried and tested approaches of dealing with disability are replaced by an approach of creative unknowing. Michal Synek is a sociologist and religions scholar. He studies the relationships between various repertoires of caretaking and ways of ordering disability. He is active as a researcher at the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University and is interested in theoretical problems which bear practical impact on scientific study and the research of disability and care. Dana Hradcová teaches at the Faculty of Humanities of Charles University, studying life with dis/ability, empirical ethics, and ethnographic and collaborative research in the sphere of social and health services. She focuses on the support of service users and collaborates with (non)professional caretakers.

Od nejstarších kultur působí jako metafora a symbol, a provází rétoriku a obraznost nejrůznějších myšlenkových směrů a sociálních projektů, utopií a experimentů. Také je často spojována se zločinem. V moderní době byl noční čas systematicky "kolonizován" a noční činnost "normalizována". Průmyslová modernita si noc podmanila jakožto další příležitost pro pracovní a výrobní procesy. Rozvoj technologií a osvětlení pak noční město otevřel lidem jakožto prostor volného času a zábavy. Všechny tyto aspekty působily i v Československu po druhé světové válce, které se tehdy vydalo cestou budování nového – socialistického – společenského systému, jehož oficiálně dosáhlo v roce 1960. Housing means prosperity and security for some; poverty, precarity and sickness for others. More people live in private rented accommodation than ever before, and rents rise without apparent reason. Homes are smaller every year, and nearly 20 per cent of tenants live in hazardous conditions. Homelessness is at a new high. Yet the government's only solution is to promote homeownership. Against Landlords shows that this crisis is not the product of happenstance or political incompetence. Government policy has intentionally split British citizens into homeowners and renters, two classes set on very different financial paths. In the UK, one out of every twenty-one adults is a landlord, and it is this group, and those who aspire to join it, represented by the political class. In his radical new interpretation of the housing crisis, lawyer Nick Bano explains how this environment set the conditions for the Grenfell Tower fire and how it means a life of anxiety for the nation's renters. It is a problem that stretches far beyond London and one inherently racist in nature. Building more housing is not the solution. It is firstly a problem of the law, Bano argues, and reforms must sweep away the landlordism at the heart of the housing crisis and British political life.
