Dílo a styl
Meyer Schapiro (23. 9. 1904, Litva – 3. 3. 1996, USA) byl jedním z nejvýznamnějších amerických historiků a teoretiků umění ve 20. století. Svou mnohostrannou erudicí, hloubkou pohledu a nezvykle širokým spektrem zájmů vytvořil předpoklady k prudkému rozmachu americké uměnovědy a vychoval množství úspěšných žáků, dále rozvíjejících jeho podněty. Vedle svých amerických učitelů Arthura K. Portera a Charlese R. Moreyho, se Schapiro ve svém díle odvolával zejména na názory hlavních představitelů vídeňské školy (Aloise Riegla, Franze Wickhoffa a Maxe Dvořáka), německých historiků umění (především Wilhelma Worringera a Wilhelma Pindera) a Francouze Henriho Focillona. Uplatňoval velmi otevřený, nedogmatický a někdy téměř experimentální způsob práce i výuky a tvůrčím způsobem se vyrovnával s aktuálními podněty z jiných oborů: současné literatury, filosofie (zvláště existencialismu a fenomenologie) a psychoanalýzy. Odmítal izolování stylových analýz od konkrétních dějinných situací, kritizoval ustrnutí v hermetické oblasti bez spojení se sociálními, politickými, ekonomickými a ideologickými zdroji. Čtenáři se dnes, v českém překladu poprvé, dostává do rukou obsáhlý průřez Schapirovým dílem, reprezentující velkou část jeho zájmového spektra. Studie o starším umění obsahují vedle ikonologických úvah z oblasti románského umění a umění rané nizozemské renesance také obsáhlou kritickou reinterpretaci knihy Sigmunda Freuda Vzpomínka z dětství Leonarda da Vinci. V části věnované novějšímu umění jsou zahrnuty studie o Courbetovi a lidovém umění, o Seuratovi a o Cézannových jablkách reflektující Schapirovy teorie sociálních a ekonomických aspektů uměleckého díla, zatímco ve stati o díle Pieta Mondriana se autor věnuje expresivním a intelektuálním kvalitám abstraktního stylu. V posledním oddílu jsou shromážděny práce metodologické, mezi nimiž obzvláště významné místo zaujímá studie Styl, v níž Schapiro shrnul dosavadní poznatky bádání o stylu a kriticky se vyrovnal se schematičností polaritních, cyklických i evolučních teorií.

While the institution provided women with new opportunities in education, along the way, they were faced with unreasonable family expectations, the ambiguous attitude of the faculty and administration, outdated social conventions, and, ultimately, the political repression of the Nazi regime.
Unprecedented in current literature, Bauhausmädels presents 87 artists and artisans through texts and photographic portraits, many published for the very first time. Recent archival discoveries revive the biographies of better-known talents. In the 1920s, the title “Bauhaus girl” expressed a silent admiration for the young women who courageously eluded traditional gender roles to build a different, creative future. These include Marianne Brandt, the first woman to be admitted to the Bauhaus metalworking program whose designs are used by Alessi to this day; Gertrud Arndt who, dissuaded by the faculty from studying architecture, instead shone through her photography and rug design; and Lucia Moholy, who photographed the Bauhaus buildings in iconic shots, but spent the rest of her life trying to retrieve the negatives which were withheld from her.
