The Short Story of Queer Art

The Short Story of Queer Art offers a fuller picture of the history of art - from the barriers broken and breakthroughs that queer artists have made, to the important contributions to key artistic movements, and the forgotten and obscured artists who are now being rediscovered and reassessed. Simply constructed, the book explores over 40 key works and artists, from across the world and throughout art history, and links them to the most important movements, themes and breakthroughs. An eclectic range of art is featured, including Aubrey Beardsley's The Peacock Skirt, Frida Kahlo's Self-portrait with Cropped Hair, Cecil Beaton's Stephen Tennant in Costume as Prince Charming and Tamara de Lempicka's Autoportrait. Accessible, concise and richly illustrated, the book reveals the connections between different periods, artists and styles, giving readers a thorough understanding and broad enjoyment of the full achievements that queer artists have made with genres that include Classical art, Art Nouveau, Pop art, Street art and Video installations.

Libero

František Štorm is a world-known type designer, but also a composer and a founding member of the band Master’s Hammer. In parallel with his long-term work in the fi eld of applied graphics and music, free work has always been created, especially linocuts and drawings, but in recent years also paintings of larger formats. The impetus for creating this book came from the success of exhibitions featuring paintings, graphics, and unique video projections. The book entitled Libero captures Štorm’s creative surge of recent years, in which typography, book illustrations, and graphic commissions naturally coexist with free work. Oil paintings inspired by, for example, South Bohemian ponds or travel experiences are increasingly gaining ground. Font shapes that we usually do not pay much attention to in books, together with painting, graphics and drawing, create a close connection in which both of Štorm’s lines of work illuminate each other in unexpected contexts. Libero also captures the breadth of his artistic scope in the visual processing of musical activities, thanks to which he appeals to a large circle of fans. The reader can enjoy wondrous, sometimes grotesquely psychedelic works in the neighbourhood of imaginative graphics and typography, the curves of which are the author’s defining gesture.

Doprovodné texty samotné Evy Eisler osvětlují kontexty vzniku jednotlivých děl a odhalují osobní rovinu přístupu k vlastní tvorbě.

Graphic Design. 1890-Today

A vivid history of 150 years of graphic design Through the turbulent events of the last century-and-a-half, graphic design—with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea—has distilled the spirit of each age. It surrounds us every minute of the day, from minimalist packaging to colorful adverts, environmental graphics to sleek interfaces: graphic design is as much about reflecting society’s aspirations and values as it is about transmitting information. Now published as part of our popular Basic Art series, this vibrant compendium lays out the evolution of graphic design from its inception in the 1890s up until the present day. Using his sweeping knowledge of the field, author Jens Müller has curated hundreds of examples from across the globe, arranged by decade. Each chapter also includes thumbnails of significant movements and influential publications, plus concise biographies of design masterminds like Massimo Vignelli (New York subway wayfinding), Otl Aicher (Lufthansa identity), Paula Scher (Citibank identity), Milton Glaser (I Love New York), Louise Fili (packaging), and Stefan Sagmeister (handwritten posters). This succinct but authoritative collection reflects on the development of a creative field that is constantly changing and challenging itself. The design classics Müller has curated act as coordinates, helping to trace the incontrovertible influence of graphic design on our daily lives. It’s both a handy primer and an informed exploration of how graphic design shapes our choices, from the products we buy and the media we consume, to how we behave and think of ourselves.

Information Graphics. 45th Ed.

How complex ideas are communicated via graphics “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” —Albert Einstein Our everyday lives are filled with a massive flow of information that we must interpret in order to understand the world we live in. Considering the complex variety of data floating around us, sometimes the best—or even only—way to communicate is visually. This unique book presents a fascinating perspective on the subject, highlighting the work of the masters of the profession, creators of breakthroughs that have changed the way we communicate. Information Graphics has been conceived and designed not just for graphics professionals, but for anyone interested in the history and practice of communicating visually. The in-depth introductory section, illustrated with over 60 images (each accompanied by an explanatory caption), features essays by Sandra Rendgen, Paolo Ciuccarelli, Richard Saul Wurman, and Simon Rogers. Looking back all the way to primitive cave paintings as a means of communication, this section gives readers an excellent overview of the subject. The second part of the book is entirely dedicated to contemporary works by today’s most renowned professionals, presenting 200 graphics projects, with over 400 examples—each with a fact sheet and an explanation of methods and objectives—divided into chapters by the topics Location, Time, Category, and Hierarchy.

Logo Beginnings. Logo Modernism. 45th Ed.

A 100-year history of the origins and evolution of the trademark By the late 19th century, trademarks began to replace traditional emblems, like coats of arms, as identifying symbols for companies. At first, logos tended to be figurative, but over time they morphed into the abstract marks that we see everywhere today. Yet many iconic brands—like Rolex, BMW, Louis Vuitton, and the New York Yankees—still use logos designed 100 years ago. Bringing together two previous volumes—Logo Beginnings and Logo Modernism—into one compendium, design expert Jens Müller (dubbed “the logo detective” by Wired magazine) has trawled historical trademark archives and design publications to unearth 1000s of logos from as far back as 1870, including many forgotten designs and early versions of today’s brand identifiers. For clarity and ease of reference, both the Beginnings and Modernism sections are divided into categories (like Pictorial, Form, Effect, and Typographic) with each category further subdivided by basic design elements, like circle, line, alphabet, overlay, dots and squares. For context, in addition to the author’s essay on the history of the trademark, R. Roger Remington writes on modernism in graphic design, plus there are profiles of eight seminal designers—including Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski. Covering everything from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, this is an invaluable resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding experts. It will also delight fans of cultural and corporate history, and anyone fascinated by the persuasive power of image and form.

The Book of Colour Concepts. 45th Ed.

The human history of color The earliest forms of human creativity – in carvings, markings, and cave paintings – bear witness to humanity’s engagement with color. Almost as old as these examples is the desire to assign structure, order, and meaning to this universal yet elusive concept, and it is this fascination that unites the works compiled in this expansive edition. Gathering over 40 rare books and manuscripts from a wealth of institutions, including the most distinguished color collections worldwide, The Book of Colour Concepts takes the reader on a chromatic odyssey across four centuries and over 350 images of luscious wheels and globes, painstakingly collated charts, and meticulous diagrams, many of them newly photographed exclusively for this edition. Seminal works of color theory, such as Isaac Newton’s Opticks and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s hugely significant Zur Farbenlehre, are shown alongside rare and unfamiliar contributions, including the theosophical color systems of Charles Webster Leadbeater and Annie Besant, the comprehensive color ‘dictionary’ of Aloys John Maerz and Morris Rea Paul, and the patchwork combinations of the Japanese costume designer and artist Sanzo Wada. This volume also brings many intriguing and often overlooked works by women into the spotlight, including the radically inventive color “blots” of the English flower painter Mary Gartside. The color systems that make up this edition are contextualized by an introductory essay from Alexandra Loske, while authoritative texts on the works reproduced set out each concept in further detail. Illuminating the history of color in all its shapes and forms, The Book of Colour Concepts offers a chromatic chronology unparalleled in scope.

Lessons for Young Artists

A lifetime's learning about art, from one of Britain's leading artists We are all artists as children, painting and drawing each day. Most of us stop when we get older - but David Gentleman kept going. For over ninety years he has been drawing, painting, engraving and printing, rising to become one of Britain's best-known and most loved artists. His watercolours have filled galleries; his iconic wood cuts are emblazoned across posters, book jackets and train stations; his stamps have made their way to the furthest corners of the world. Here, the great, polymathic artist and craftsman shares what he has learned over the course of a lifetime of making and thinking about art. Unlike his contemporaries, Gentleman was never a teacher; his lessons are a sequence of unconventional prompts and reflections that will deepen how you think about art and the world around you. Sincere, practical and unpretentious, Gentleman's insights are a breath of fresh air. Here are new ways to focus, notice the world and cultivate your own style; techniques to evolve your work, from playing with time to painting in bad weather; methods for getting the most out of mistakes and negative criticism; and, above all, reminders to return, always, to the simple delights of creativity.

Sexy Record Covers

Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? The sexiest, funniest, weirdest record covers ever wrapped around vinyl Eric Godtland has worked in the record industry for over 35 years, and collected records since turning 12 in 1977. As manager of the American band Third Eye Blind from 1995 he traveled the world, exploring record stores in every country, adding to his collection. Sexy covers were not a priority, but always welcome. When Godtland switched to managing, and touring with, Village People in the 2010s he encountered such eccentric, comical and erotic covers in far-flung countries he concentrated on acquiring every sexy record cover ever produced. And he succeeded. The hundreds of covers in this book come from North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Most are from small labels with limited production that were never seen outside their countries of origin. They range in age from Music Out of the Moon, the first electronic album, 1947, to punk band Dwarves Concept Album, 2023. Genres go from mainstream pop to Japanese jazz, German schlager, raunchy comedy and uncensored sex talk. The artists are well-known: Rolling Stones, James Brown, Charlie Mingus, 2 Live Crew and Queen; cult favorites: Chicks on Speed and comic Blowfly; and frankly profane: Sex Organs, V8 Wankers and The Pleasure Fuckers. All used sex to sell their music, as we’re using their wise decision to sell this sexy, surprising, entirely hilarious book.

Druhá část publikace přináší šest zásadních teoretických textů taneční vědy uplynulého století v českém překladu a s odborným komentářem. Kniha propojuje domácí pohled s mezinárodním diskurzem a nabízí čtenáři orientaci v základních konceptech a metodách výzkumu tance.
