Nests
An exquisitely illustrated, one-of-a-kind celebration of the hidden beauty of nature and the ingenuity of birds
Susan Ogilvy started painting bird nests almost by accident. One day, while tidying up her garden after a storm, she found a chaffinch nest - a strange, sodden lump on the grass under a fir tree. She carried it inside and placed it on a newspaper; over the next few hours, as the water drained out of it, the sodden lump blossomed into a mossy jewel. She was amazed, and dropped everything to make a painting of the nest at exact life size.
This was the start of an obsession; Ogilvy has since painted more than fifty bird nests from life, each time marvelling at its ingenious construction. Every species of bird has its own vernacular, but sources its materials - most commonly twigs, roots, grasses, reeds, leaves, moss, lichen, hair, feathers and cobwebs, less usually, mattress stuffing and string - according to local availability. Ogilvy would, of course, never disturb nesting birds; instead she relies upon serendipity, which is why all her nests have either been abandoned after fulfilling their purpose, or displaced by strong winds.
Although Nests showcases the specimens she has found near her homes in Somerset and on the Isle of Arran, its subject matter is by no means only British, since these same birds can be found all over Europe, Scandinavia and as far afield as Russia, Turkey and North Africa. This wondrous book is all the more special for its rarity. Few modern books exist specifically on the subject of bird nests; the most recent among the author's reference works was published in 1932. Problematika životního prostředí dnes patří v českém umění k horkým tématům a stále zřetelněji ovlivňuje uvažování a jednání mnoha autorů a autorek, institucí i jejich návštěvníků. Není to však tak dávno, co zde environmentální rozprava hrála jen marginální roli. Co se změnilo? Kdy, jak a proč se k ní začala obracet pozornost? Právě tento historický proces ozeleňování českého umění je ústředním tématem předkládané knihy.
Ta volně navazuje na Navrátilovu starší publikaci Zelené ostrovy: České umění ve věku environmentalismu 19602000. Doplňuje některé dávnější počiny, které byly v předchozím textu opominuty reakci umělců na devastaci těžbou a průmyslem postižených regionů nebo naslouchání přírodě umělkyně Olgy Karlíkové. Hlavní pozornost se však obrací k novému tisíciletí, kdy můžeme zvláště od počátku druhého desetiletí sledovat postupný nárůst zájmu o environmentální problematiku. Ten staví jednotlivce i širší uměleckou scénu před řadu nových výzev, ať už je to potřeba orientace ve spletitém prostoru diskurzů vědy, filozofie a politiky, nutnost promýšlet alternativy vlastních tvůrčích, provozních i životních strategií, nebo aktualizace otázek společenské zodpovědností umělců a umění. Reakce na ně jsou zde přiblíženy prostřednictvím několika příběhů, které představují vybrané tvůrce, díla a další aktéry. Čtenář může sledovat úsilí naladit naše vnímání na podmínky antropocénu nebo kritické hlasy napadající antropocentrismus, konzum a politicko-ekonomické systémy. Další projekty zdůrazňují péči o provázané přírodní a kulturní ekosystémy, mají edukační ambice či jsou vedeny zájmem o kosmologie původních obyvatel pralesů rovníkového pásma. K novějším podnětům pak patří zvláště myšlenky spekulativní filozofie a posthumanismu nebo apely klimatické krize a s ní spjatého hnutí. V knize jsou tak postupně charakterizována různá řečiště, která dodávají energii a inspiraci současné umělecké environmentální vlně.
Luiz Zerbini: Botanica, Monotypes 2016-2020
Exquisite monotypes celebrating the beauty of plants by transforming them into inky abstractions
Though he has engaged with a variety of mediums--watercolor, photography, sculpture--Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini (born 1959) has devoted the past several years to the creation of monotypes. He selects leaves, flowers and branches for their distinctive shapes and textures and places them on an inked metal plate. He then lays a large sheet of paper over the plate so that the botanical compositions are transferred onto the page. The result is a large-scale monotype print that immerses the viewer in the minute details of a plant's anatomy.
High contrast, with a minimal palette of browns, blacks and greens, these images blur the distinction between figuration and abstraction. Over the past four years, the artist has created more than 300 monotypes in this style, working from within major museum institutions in Brazil. Now, Zerbini has collaborated with the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain to collect the entire series in a single large-format volume. In these images, readers can appreciate his dedication to both the craft of printmaking and the preservation of the world's natural beauty in unexpected ways.

Circus
In its heyday, the American circus was the largest showbiz industry the world had ever seen. From the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, traveling circuses performed for audiences of up to 14,000 per show, employed as many as 1,600 men and women, and crisscrossed the country on 20,000 miles of railroad in one season alone. Iluminované rukopisné zlomky z oblasti latinské kultury
Ve Sbírce grafiky a kresby Národní galerie v Praze je uloženo 115 středověkých a raně novověkých rukopisných zlomků původem z různých zemí oblasti latinské kultury, které byly doposud v odborné literatuře podchyceny nedostatečně. Speciální katalog iluminovaných zlomků zpracovaný na základě nového výzkumu je proto důležitým krokem ke zpřístupnění dosud nepříliš známého ikonografického materiálu. Katalog byl vytvořen v souladu s požadavky soudobé kodikologie na popis vnějších i vnitřních znaků a vybaven obrazovou přílohou. Jako základní evidenční pomůcka umožní badatelům orientovat se v rozsáhlém fondu vyobrazení nejrůznějších námětů a může se tak stát východiskem práce nejen historiků, kodikologů a historiků umění, ale i odborníků v dalších vědeckých disciplínách, domácích i zahraničních, jimž slouží anglická sumarizující stať a ikonografický rejstřík.
