Jak rozumět populární kultuře
Populární a masová kultura se do hledáčku akademického zájmu dostávala pomalu. V sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech 20. století se okruh západních akademiků věnujících se soustavně populární kultuře začal rozšiřovat a daný zájem přestal působit excesivně. Ne-vysoká kultura však byla vykládána ještě v duchu své zajímavé pokleslosti, z hlediska toho, čím je jiná než kultura elitní. Teprve kniha Jak rozumět populární kultuře Johna Fiskea (nar. 1939) poskytla akademicky fundovaný, sémioticky založený výklad populární kultury v její komplexnosti. Dílo respektuje v tradičním pojetí jakožto tvůrčí čin, ale zároveň ho chápe i jako tržní komoditu; vnímatelem rozumí hravého fanouška, jemuž však neupírá funkci spolutvůrce významů. Fiske nevykládá populární kulturu emancipačně, nesnaží se ji propašovat do středu akademického zájmu proto, že je na ní také něco zajímavého. Promyšleně ukazuje, jak složitá je síť sociokulturních mechanismů, v níž tento typ kultury funguje, a jak přirozeně se umělecké dílo mísí s životním stylem, sférami každodennosti či s ekonomickými kritérii. Jeho výklad je podložený argumentačně, a přitom „popkulturní“, tedy čtivý a podněcující.

"Sochař, malíř a knižní grafik Zbyněk Sekal, se narodil v roce 1923 a žil v Československu až do své emigrace v roce 1968. Od té doby až do své smrti v roce 1998 žil a působil v Rakousku. For 40 years, Kubrick fans and film buffs have wondered about the director's mysterious unmade film on Napoleon Bonaparte. Slated for production immediately following the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick's "Napoleon" was to be at once a character study and a sweeping epic, replete with grandiose battle scenes featuring thousands of extras. To write his original screenplay, Kubrick embarked on two years of intensive research; with the help of dozens of assistants and an Oxford Napoleon specialist, he amassed an unparalleled trove of research and preproduction material, including approximately 15,000 location scouting photographs and 17,000 slides of Napoleonic imagery. No stone was left unturned in Kubrick's nearly-obsessive quest to uncover every piece of information history had to offer about Napoleon. But alas, Kubrick's movie was not destined to be: the film studios, first M.G.M. and then United Artists, decided such an undertaking was too risky at a time when historical epics were out of fashion.
TASCHEN's tribute to this unmade masterpiece makes Kubrick's valiant work on "Napoleon" available to fans for the first time. Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours
First published in 1814, Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is a taxonomic guide to the colors of the natural world that has been cherished by artists and scientists for more than two centuries. This new edition brings the classic work back to life.
In the late eighteenth century, mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner devised a standardized color scheme that allowed him to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who used the actual minerals described by Werner to create the color charts in the book, enhancing them with examples from flora and fauna.
In the pre-photographic age, almost all visual details had to be captured via the written word, and scientific observers could not afford ambiguity in their descriptions. Werner's handbook became an invaluable resource for naturalists and anthropologists, including Charles Darwin, who used it to identify colors in nature during his seminal voyage on the HMS Beagle. Werner's terminology lent both precision and lyricism to Darwin's pioneering writings, enabling his readers to envision a world they would never see.

Albert Oehlen
The paintings of Albert Oehlen live by audacious strategies, by questioning the image and the rules of abstraction, and by an openness and beauty often reached through the unlikeliest of means.
In this expansive monograph, we meet the full range of Oehlen's artistic thoughts and approaches paintings that integrate mirrors, paintings that are executed strictly in primary colors or only in gray, heavily pixelated paintings produced with the help of one of the first personal computers. We find collaged fragments of garish poster ads on canvases that transforming screaming slogans into abstract elements, charcoal drawings the size of a wall, finger paintings, and paintings in which black treelike silhouettes contort themselves into a lexicon of abstract forms. Throughout, Oehlen transforms the conceptual into the compositional, at once invigorating and challenging the viewer.
Revising and updating TASCHEN's previous Collector's Edition, this revelatory survey explores Oehlen's trajectory from his early days up to the present. It features more than 400 paintings as well as insightful commentaries and interviews, covering Oehlen's different work stages and approaches. Roberto Ohrt's essay takes us back to the special vibe of the early 1980s where Oehlen worked alongside Kippenberger, Buttner, and others, part of a scene that painted quickly and close to the pulse of time. Oehlen discusses his computer paintings with John Corbett, and follows up on his more recent work, his thoughts on art, and his day in the studio in a lengthy conversation with Alexander Klar.
