Art is Everywhere - How to Really Look at Things
In 2005 there was as a street performance in Florence that featured a white canvas with a light grey sentence reading, Art is Everywhere, temporarily exhibited on the streets. The aim of the project was to create a temporary visual emptiness: a necessary condition for opening people s eyes so that they could see the interesting layers of scratches, marks, old posters and parts of the city that normally remain unnoticed by many. Within a few years, it had become a 2 day workshop, where participants are invited to explore the city with new eyes, and were asked to complete small assignments and to document their findings with photographs. This book is the result of that experience, to forget the challenge of defining Art but understand it as a trigger for new and different interpretations of what already surrounds us. It is a meter on how we look at things, and whether we have the right tools or not to decode it. Now more than ever art is strictly related to time. Since Art is everywhere you just have to be at the right place at the right time. But that is not enough. Not only, as Proust said, is it necessary to have new eyes to discover new things it is also indispensable that you are slowing down. See the details. Russian Criminal Tattoo Police Files Volume I" features more than 180 photographs of Russian criminal tattoos and official police papers from the collection of Arkady Bronnikov, regarded as Russia's foremost authority on criminal tattoo iconography. From the mid-1960s to the late 1980s, Bronnikov worked as a senior expert in criminalistics at the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, and part of his duties involved visiting the correctional institutions of the Ural and Siberia regions. It was there that he interviewed convicts, gathering information and taking photographs of their tattoos, amassing one of the most comprehensive archives of this phenomenon. Bronnikov regularly helped to solve criminal cases across Russia by using his collection of tattoos to identify culprits and corpses. Selections from Bronnikov's collection, which includes more than 900 photographs, will be published by Fuel in two volumes. The Bronnikov collection was made exclusively for police use, to further the understanding of the language of these tattoos and to act as an aid in the identification and apprehension of criminals in the field. Dadaism
A precursor to Surrealism, the Dada movement stressed the absurd and unpredictable, the illogical and chaotic, lashing out against traditional esthetics and upending artistic conventions. Ensor
It was never a sure thing that James Ensor (1860-1949), the great Belgian painter of macabre and ghoulish scenes, would become a nationally revered figure. He was unusual in many ways. Apart from his training in Brussels, he spent his entire long life in Ostend, seemingly the opposite of cosmopolitan. Later on he was expelled by the group Les XX for a particularly controversial canvas: The Entry of Christ into Brussels, which he had painted in 1889. An expressionist before the term was coined, Ensor used the iconography of masks and skeletons to point up the essential horrors of life, and often underwrote his images with a sardonic gallows humour. It has been said that he appropriated the subject matter of a Bosch or Bruegel and revisioned them using the techniques of Manet or Rubens. But this is to diminish his own unique take on both art and experience. A genuine maverick in the way that so many Belgian artists are (lest we forget Magritte), James Ensor can claim a dark and distinctive place in the art histories of the last hundred years.
Hiroshige
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world", ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western world's visual characterization of Japan. Though Hiroshige captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his most famous work was a series known as "100 Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858). This book provides an introduction to his work and an overview of his career.
