A Life of Picasso Volume IV

The Minotaur Years opens in 1933 with a visit by the Hungarian-French photographer Brassai to Picasso's chateau in Normandy, Boisgeloup, where he would take his iconic photographs of the celebrated plaster busts of Picasso's lover Marie-Therese Walter. Picasso was contributing to Andre Breton's Minotaur magazine and spending time with the likes of Man Ray, Salvador Dali, Lee Miller, and the poet Paul Eluard, in Paris and the south of France. It was during this time that Picasso began writing surrealist poetry and became obsessed with the image of himself as the mythic Minotaur.
Richardson shows us the artist being as prolific as ever, painting Walter, as well as the surrealist photographer Dora Maar, who became a muse, collaborator and lover. The bombing of Guernica in April 1937 would inspire Picasso's vast masterwork of the same name, which he painted in just a few weeks for the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. When the Nazis occupied Paris in 1940, Picasso chose to remain in the city despite the threat that his art would be confiscated. In 1943, Picasso met Francoise Gilot who would replace Maar and inspire a brilliant new sequence of paintings.
As always, Richardson tells Picasso's story through his work, analysing how it shows what the artist was feeling and thinking. His fascinating and illuminating narrative immerses us in one of the most exciting moments in twentieth-century cultural history, and brings to a close the definitive and critically acclaimed biography of one of the world's most celebrated artists.
Jaroslava Pešicová - Kočky, psi a Robert Rauschenberg
Cílem publikace, kterou v roce 2021 vydala GAVU Cheb ve spolupráci s Ústavem dějin umění AV ČR, v. v. i. u příležitosti stejnojmenné výstavy, není souhrnné zpracování tvorby Jaroslavy Pešicové. Soustřeďuje se na určité momenty, které byly pro směřování malířky rozhodující. Nástrojem interpretace je strukturální rozbor jejích prací, konfrontovaný s dobovými teoretickými texty. Na základě toho je možné její tvorbu pochopit v širším kontextu umění druhé poloviny 20. století, a to nejen v rámci nové figurace, ale i jiných směrů.

Hannah Hoech
World-renowned for her work during the Weimar period, Hannah Hoech was a pioneer in many aspects, both artistic and cultural. She was the lone woman of the Berlin Dada movement - the riotous form of art that deconstructed sound, language, and images to re-assemble them into new objects, texts and meanings. Hoech was a pivotal force in the development of collage, paving the way for today's ubiquitous image editing techniques. A determined believer in women's rights, Hoech questioned conventional concepts of partnership, beauty and the making of art, her work presenting acute critiques of racial and social stereotypes, particularly that of her native Germany.

Kniha Umění z NDR. Dědictví na obtíž? je vůbec první publikací v českém jazyce, která se zabývá výtvarným uměním někdejší Německé demokratické republiky. Ačkoli existence tohoto státu trvala jen čtyři desetiletí, jeho výtvarné dědictví vstoupilo do zcela nové etapy po znovusjednocení Německa. Editor Matěj Forejt (nar. 1993) proto publikaci nesestavil jako přehled uzavřených dějin, ale zaměřil se naopak na témata a příběhy překračující geografické i časové hranice. Přibližuje je prostřednictvím dvanácti textů celkem čtrnácti autorů a autorek. Proč po znovusjednocení Německa v roce 1990 vypukl dlouhotrvající spor o tvorbu umělců z bývalé NDR? Koho v 70. a 80. letech na Západě zajímalo umění z východního Německa a komu bylo trnem v oku? Co se dělo na ilegální galerijní scéně východního Německa? Jak malíře Gerharda Richtera ovlivnilo studium v NDR? Kde je v současném německém malířství ukrytý odkaz socialistického realismu? Téma vizuálního antijudaismu nenávisti vůči Židům založené na náboženské odlišnosti a antisemitismu nenávistných obsahů postavených především na národnostním vymezování představuje nedílnou součást místních dějin: dějin náboženské, národnostní a rasové intolerance. Ta mohla pramenit z církevních doktrín, feudálních nařízení a později národnostních požadavků i obecné potřeby nalézt viníka prakticky jakýchkoli společenských problémů. Výstavní katalog jednak představuje známé vrcholy antisemitských resentimentů, jednak reviduje pohled na období, která se obvykle s představou protižidovských nálad nespojují. Ostatně nebezpečí protižidovské vizuality zůstává palčivým problémem také současné doby. Mapování vizuálních projevů antijudaismu a antisemitismu je zároveň zprávou širšího významu, neboť procesy stereotypizace, delegitimizace, dehumanizace i vylučování ze společnosti představují obecnější problém. Ať už jsou namířeny proti jakékoli náboženské, národnostní či sexuální minoritě, jejich základem zůstává vykonstruovaný a imaginární konflikt.
Sto let jednoho stromu
V listopadu 1951 bylo v Národní galerii založeno oddělení orientálního umění, jehož přednostou se krátce nato stal indolog Lubor Hájek. V průběhu následujících desetiletí se v jeho sbírkách podařilo shromáždit přes deset tisíc předmětů asijského umění a představit je na desítkách krátkodobých výstav.
S nebývalým zaujetím připravená publikace Sto let jednoho stromu je věnována Luboru Hájkovi k nedožitým stým narozeninám. Podrobně popisuje okolnosti vzniku sbírek asijského umění před druhou světovou válkou a přibližuje okamžiky založení orientálního oddělení Národní galerie počátkem padesátých let. Ukazuje, z jakých zdrojů sbírky orientálního oddělení čerpaly, a představuje osobnosti, které se na jeho zrodu podílely. Vypráví pohnutý příběh dvou dlouhodobých expozic čínského umění v zámku Troja a v Benešově nad Ploučnicí a téměř detektivním způsobem pomocí dobových dokumentů mapuje okolnosti požáru benešovského zámku v roce 1969, který část asijských sbírek zničil. Závěrečné pasáže knihy představují erudovaného odborníka Lubora Hájka jakožto milovníka a znalce asijského umění, jemuž sbírky někdejšího orientálního oddělení do značné míry vděčí za svou podobu a obsah. Publikace tak přináší detailní vhled do procesů fungování i kontextu institucionálního sběratelství asijského umění v Československu v meziválečném a poválečném období.
