Peter Blake: Collage
Peter Blake (b. 1932) has remained constant and groundbreaking in his exploration of the medium of collage throughout his career spanning seven decades. Most recognised for his iconic 1967 cover for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, Blake already understood the potential of collage as an art form as a student at the Royal College of Art in the 1950s, where his reputation as a founder and key proponent of the Pop Art movement was established.
An avid collector, Blake's collages combine junkyard treasures and found objects with images from popular culture. He revisits themes drawn from his childhood - the entertainments of the circus, the glamour of the cinema and the showmanship of the wrestling ring - weaving detailed, often humorous narratives. From his early paintings depicting assembled fragments of popular imagery, to his found-object constructions and his most recent inkjet print collages, Blake has broadened the scope of what collage can be and communicate.
Peter Blake Collage provides the first comprehensive survey of Peter Blake's work in the medium. It features a foreword by David Hockney, an essay by Patrick Elliott, Chief Curator of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, a recent interview with Peter Blake by Natalie Rudd, Senior Curator of the Arts Council Collection, over 250 colour reproductions and a newly compiled illustrated chronology.

Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was born in rural Norway before his parents moved to Oslo (then called Kristiana). He grew up under the influence of frequent family illness, both mental and physical, and would later use his art as a means of expressing his turbulent psychological state. He studied at the Royal School of Art and Design in Oslo and spent time in Paris and Berlin. Most of his work managed to survive the Nazi purges of "degenerate art."
Spring Cannot be Cancelled
On turning eighty, David Hockney sought out rustic tranquillity for the first time: a place to watch the sunset and the change of the seasons; a place to keep the madness of the world at bay. So when Covid-19 and lockdown struck, it made little difference to life at La Grande Cour, the centuries-old Normandy farmhouse where Hockney set up a studio a year before, in time to paint the arrival of spring. In fact, he relished the enforced isolation as an opportunity for even greater devotion to his art.

Publikace Chtěl_a jsem další zkušenost zhodnocuje desetiletí fungování Ateliéru hostujícího umělce na AVU. Tímto specializovaným pracovištěm akademie prošli významný umělci a umělkyně střední a mladší generace.
Kniha představuje jednotlivé semestrální projekty a relevantní texty z již publikovaných katalogů (od autorů nebo přizvaných teoretiků), medailony umělců, kteří v daném období ateliér vedli a studentskou reflexi, zpracovanou formou rozhovorů. Její součástí jsou také dva teoretické příspěvky, které se zabývají obecnějšími problémy uměleckého vzdělávání a ukazují konkrétní genealogii Šalounova ateliéru. Kniha odhaluje různé perspektivy a pohledy na takto specifickou a ojedinělou vzdělávací platformu uvnitř vysoké umělecké školy.

Georg Baselitz
A prolific artist with a protean output, Georg Baselitz has rethought the conventions of a range of media, predominantly painting and sculpture, over the course of a career of some sixty years. Born in 1938, Baselitz was expelled from art school in East Berlin in 1956 for 'socio-political immaturity', and moved to the western half of the city. By the late 1950s, he had rejected the dominant tendencies of both sides of the country and his singular achievement was to reintroduce the figure, compromised and discredited though it was by both Nazism and Communism, into art. By drawing attention to art by 'outsiders', such as psychiatric patients, and invoking a Parisian model of existentialist art and literature, Baselitz proposed an alternative European tradition that did not eliminate the human subject.
In alluding later to movements in German painting such as Expressionism as well as to artists like Munch, he also consciously rehabilitated the kind of art that was condemned by Hitler as 'degenerate'. The book follows the development of Baselitz's unique style from his earliest work through to the most recent creations of his eighth decade. Calvocoressi's masterful construction of a chronological narrative helps us to evaluate Baselitz's work in terms of the disruptions of his life - historical upheavals witnessed alongside an astonishing career.
Beatriz Milhazes
In her vibrant works, the Brazilian painter Beatriz Milhazes fuses two very different worldviews. Her abstract compositions, which can be seen in a line with modernist masters from Henri Matisse to Bridget Riley, are saturated with the colors and light of her native country. Her paintings are strewn with symbols of everyday life in Brazil, invoking carnival, traditional craftsmanship, and motifs from baroque to pop, all choreographed in an exuberant visual rhythm. The colorful atmosphere has an irresistible exotic allure, but as in the works of Paul Gauguin, we find a broken paradise in which darker, more melancholic tones resonate, both in the promises of tropical life and those of modernist abstraction.
In seeking this balance, Milhazes developed a special transfer technique in the late eighties, painting her motifs onto plastic sheets, gluing these to the canvas and letting them dry, and then peeling away the plastic once dry so that the paint remains on the canvas. This method allows the artist to layer surface upon surface and to achieve an iridescence somewhere between radiant aura and shimmering melancholy. Since her breakthrough in the early 1990s, Milhazes has extended the scope of her work to other media, producing screen prints, collages made of chocolate and candy wrappers, sculptures such as giant mobiles made of carnival decorations, site-specific projects that transform building facades into stained glass windows, and experiments with body and rhythm in collaboration with her sister Marcia's ballet ensemble.
This updated edition, which has been expanded to include works made as recently as 2020, explores all of the artist's creative phases, from her beginnings to the present, with over 300 of her works. The book was created in close collaboration with the artist, in both the selection of images and specially designed pages between chapters. It includes a conversation with editor Hans Werner Holzwarth in which the artist unravels her working methods and talks about the ideas and cultural background behind her work. An art historical essay by David Ebony, a poetic dictionary of Milhazes's key motifs by Adriano Pedrosa, and a detailed, updated artist biography by Luiza Interlenghi round off this comprehensive work.Also available in an Art Edition with a silkscreen print signed by Beatriz Milhazes

Po úvodních kapitolách věnovaných pojmům socializace, uměleckého díla a dějinnosti přistupuje autor ke svého druhu dějinám umění , ovšem pojednávaným z hlediska socializace a dějinnosti, roli průvodce má i Zuidervaartův model spirituality jako žitého obsahu, nikoli jako ideových tezí. [] Po stručném výkladu některých základních témat řeckého (zvl. typu kúros) a křesťanského umění vykládá renesanci jako přechod do lineární perspektivy , blízké heideggerovské vrženosti do světa, jehož jsme součásti, což nás pak bude provázet i v umění 20. století. [] Následuje další hraniční oblast, totiž tradičně velice hojně pojednávané baroko. Ludvík Hlaváček však i zde sleduje specifické, opomíjené a mnohdy paradoxní problémy socializace. Poslední přibližně třetina knihy pojednává témata víceméně aktuální, kde je autor zcela suverénně doma a může vybírat z nepřeberného množství příkladů. Kapitoly: Informel, Akční umění a Postmoderna. [] Za důležitý přínos považuji závěr knihy (Závěr: Sociální role umění jako probuzení bytostné nejistoty?). Opatrně skeptickým přístupem mapuje prostor nejistoty i jeho zneužívání k prezentaci falešných jistot. Hledání sociální role umění provází ovšem právě nejistota. Přesto, ba spíše proto, není hledání místa a sociální role umění v rámci sociálního diskurzu marné. Dokonce: takové hledání dynamiku sociálního diskurzu udržuje při životě. Hiroshige
The last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige produced works of subtle yet intense color. This collection of prints, first published in the 1850s, contains images of each of Japan's provinces. Created during Hiroshige's highly productive later years, this series was an ambitious project that captured a crucial moment in Japan's history, a decade before the Meiji Restoration would open the doors to industrialization and Western influence. Fundamental Painting
Fundamental Painting (1975): Lessons in Minimalist Painting is the first account of this 1970s current and its role in the history of 20th century painting. The term Fundamental Painting was coined by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam as the title of a 1975 exhibition that sought to highlight a new kind of painting emerging on both sides of the Atlantic. It was built around Robert Ryman and included 18 artists from Europe and the United States. The then museum director of the Stedelijk Edy de Wilde called their artistic scope "a reflection on the foundations of painting." In the first part of this book, Rajlich traces how the curators defined this specific current and its public as well as its critical reception. In the second part, she explains in detail the elements of paintings, how they are used in Fundamental Painting, and why. Next, Rajlich surveys the use of these painterly elements across 20th century abstract and non-objective painting in relation to the development of Minimalist painting. The last part of this book examines the effect of Fundamental Painting on its viewer in the context of art across the ages. It argues that Fundamental Painting goes beyond formalist concerns and seeks to engage with the concept of beauty as understood through the philosophy of aesthetics.
Claudia Rajlich is a specialist in 20th century art and painting in general. She has extensive experience as an author, curator and art advisor for both public and private institutions. Her recent research has focused on non-objective art, the art market, and interdisciplinary questions around art collecting.
Kniha Fundamental Painting (1975): Lessons in Minimalist Painting přináší první ucelené pojednání o fundamentální malbě a její roli v dějinách malířství 20. století. Termín fundamentální malba vytvořilo amsterdamské Stedelijk Museum a v roce 1975 jej použilo pro název výstavy, která se snažila upozornit na nový druh malby vznikající na obou stranách Atlantiku. Výstava představila 18 umělců z Evropy a ze Spojených států, včetně zakladatelské osobnosti Roberta Rymana. Tehdejší ředitel muzea Edy de Wilde označil jejich umělecké směřování jako reflexi základů malby.
V první části knihy sleduje Claudia Rajlich, jak kurátoři definovali tento specifický proud a jak jej přijala kritická obec i veřejnost, ve druhé části pak autorka podrobně popisuje jednotlivé prvky obrazů a vysvětluje, jak je fundamentální malba používá a proč. Následně také zkoumá použití těchto malířských prvků v abstraktním a neobjektivním malířství 20. století ve vztahu k vývoji minimalistické malby. Závěr knihy je věnován působení fundamentální malby na diváka v kontextu umění v průběhu staletí. Autorka se domnívá, že tento druh malby překračuje rámec formalistických vymezení a že je významně provázán s konceptem krásy, jak jej chápe filozofie estetiky.
Claudia Rajlich se specializuje na výtvarné umění 20. století, zejména na malbu. Má bohaté zkušenosti jako autorka, kurátorka a umělecká poradkyně pro veřejné i soukromé instituce. Aktuálně se zabývá neobjektivním uměním, trhem s uměním a interdisciplinárními otázkami, které se týkají sbírání umění.
Jaroslav Valečka
Jaroslav Valečka je absolventem ateliéru Jiřího Sopka na pražské akademii výtvarného umění a na scéně se pohybuje od poloviny devadesátých let 20. století. Během své pětadvacetileté činnosti si vytvořil poutavý umělecký styl, pro nějž čerpá podněty z jemu blízkých severočeských Sudet, které jsou pro něj panoptikem a jež transformuje svojí imaginací.
Záměrně pracuje s literárním obsahem a nadsázkou. Programově se navrací k nízkým formám kultury, které byly s nástupem postmoderny rehabilitovány. Za svoji dosavadní kariéru je autorem četných úspěšných výstav jak v zahraničí, tak v Čechách (například Špálova galerie v Praze, Alšova jihočeská galerie).
Kniha, v níž je výběrově zastoupena tvorba z posledních deseti let, navazuje na předchozí úspěšnou monografii Edwarda Lucie-Smithe z roku 2015 a mapuje tak Valečkovu tvorbu z posledních let. Vedle přátel z řad britských stuckistů (Paul Harvey, Charles Thomson) přispěli do této publikace Markéta Hornerová, Rea Michalová, Jolana Pastor, Edward Lucie-Smith, Zuzana Štěpanovičová, Kateřina Tučková, Martina Vítková a Radek Wohlmuth. Pro čtenáře může být zajímavá i biografie samotného umělce, v níž píše o svém životě.
