Freedom Ship : The Uncharted History of Escaping Slavery by Sea

Freedom Ship is a gripping history of stowaway slaves and the vessels that carried them to liberty. Up to 100,000 fugitives successfully fled the horrors of bondage in the American South. Many were ushered clandestinely northwards from safe house to safe house: know as the Underground Railway. Thousands of others escaped not by land, but by sea. Their dramatic tales of whispered conspiracy and billowing sails make Freedom Ship essential and enthralling reading. Through the intricate riverways of the Carolinas to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, Freedom Ship traces the freedom seekers who turned their sights to the sea. Sailaways regularly arrived in Britain on cotton ships from New York or Southern ports. For example, Moses Roper, one of the most determined runaways in American history, traveled 350 miles through slave country before eventually taking a ship named the Napoleon to Liverpool. Both legendary abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman used the waterfront as a path to freedom. Marcus Rediker puts his command of archival research on full display in this luminous portrait of the Atlantic seaboard as a place of conspiracy, mutiny and liberation.

Everlasting Jesus

A 40-day journey exploring how the eternal wisdom of Jesus can comfort, challenge, and center us in a rapidly changing world. In a time marked by anxiety and polarization, Everlasting Jesus offers a daily invitation to slow down and reconnect with what is lasting and true. Drawing from the Gospels and writing with his signature warmth, Rick Hamlin shows how the words and actions of Jesus still speak powerfully into the complexity of modern life. Whether it's Jesus crossing cultural lines to speak with a Samaritan woman—offering her, a social outcast, dignity and “living water”—or his call to invest in what matters rather than be ruled by fear and scarcity, each reflection ties Scripture to the concerns of now: social division, information overload, spiritual exhaustion, and the search for authentic connection. Through stories of compassion, resilience, and radical grace, Hamlin explores how Jesus can help us confront prejudice, live generously, and hold on to hope when the world feels unsteady. From the challenge to love those we disagree with to the promise that “you are the light of the world,” this book provides a deep well of encouragement for anyone seeking clarity and purpose. With Scripture-based reflections and thoughtful prompts for personal or group use, Everlasting Jesus will help you renew your faith, reframe your priorities, and simply hear Jesus’s voice above the noise. People of the Wheat

How wheat growing, milling, and baking shaped the people and culture of North Texas. In the national imaginary, America’s amber fields of grain lie in the country’s center, but for more than a century, they also grew across one pocket of the South: North Texas. From the 1840s to the 1970s, the state's agriculture, dominated in lore by cotton in the east and livestock in the open range, was heavily invested in the cultivation, processing, sale, and consumption of wheat. Recalling a forgotten history, Rebecca Sharpless shows how the rhythms of the wheat harvest—and the evolution of the milling, distribution, and baking industries—governed daily life in what is now known as the Dallas–Forth Worth Metroplex. In the 1840s, Anglo settlers discovered that grain flourished in North Texas and quickly built an economy that included wheat in fields, mills, and kitchens. After the Civil War, hand labor gave way to mechanization, greatly increasing production. Commercial bakeries churned out novel confections, and big cities were built on the bounty of the countryside. In the second half of the twentieth century, as production moved northward, industrial milling and baking declined, but home baking boomed, flour advertising supported regional music, and wheat fortunes financed the region’s cultural life. Sharpless covers 150 years of wheat’s very human history and shows how the labor that cultivated it, the sustenance it provided, and the prosperity it generated left an indelible mark on the people and institutions of Texas.

Mostanra Alice a kamera másik oldalán él.

Appalachian Plants

Richly illustrated and easily accessible, Appalachian Plants draws on centuries of botanical, cultural, and spiritual connections to the land as it invites readers of all ages into the vibrant world of southern Appalachia. Featuring regional staples such as ramps, tobacco, pawpaw, mountain mint, and white pine alongside more recent horticultural additions like rhubarb, persimmons, and sugar maples, the book presents a layered portrait of Appalachian flora. While author Linda Hager Pack provides scientific names and physical characteristics of each plant, her work goes beyond botany as each entry is enlivened with Native American legends, traditional folk remedies, historic recipes, and Appalachian lore that reveal the deeply rooted significance of plants in this storied region. The book honors the long history of plant use among the Cherokee and other Native American peoples of Appalachia, who developed sophisticated systems of herbal medicine, seasonal harvesting, and spiritual practices. From white pine salves to pawpaw fruit tonics, their knowledge shaped generations of land stewardship and ecological understanding. Additionally, European settlers brought seeds, farming practices, and folk beliefs from their home countries as well, adapting Old World crops and customs to mountain life. Meanwhile, African American enslaved people, servants, and free men and women also contributed a wealth of agricultural knowledge and medicinal plant traditions, immeasurably influencing the evolution of Appalachian foodways and herbal practices. This blending of traditions created a rich ethnobotanical legacy, one rooted in survival, community, and respect for the natural world. Featuring beautiful watercolor illustrations by Pat Banks and supported by instructional resources, this book serves both as a unique field guide and a cultural history of Appalachia. It invites readers to explore not just the uses of plants, but the stories they carry—across generations, geographies, and peoples—within the living landscape of Appalachia.

Autobiography

Autobiography is one of the most popular of written forms. From Casanova to Benjamin Franklin to the Kardashians, individuals throughout history have recorded their own lives and experiences. These personal writings are central to the work of literary critics, philosophers, historians and psychologists, who have found in autobiographies from across the centuries not only an understanding of the ways in which lives have been lived, but the most fundamental accounts of what it means to be a self in the world. In this Very Short Introduction Laura Marcus defines what we mean by ''autobiography'', and considers its relationship with similar literary forms such as memoirs, journals, letters, diaries, and essays. Analysing the core themes in autobiographical writing, such as confession, conversion and testimony; romanticism and the journeying self; Marcus discusses the autobiographical consciousness (and the roles played by time, memory and identity), and considers the relationship between psychoanalysis and autobiography. Exploring the themes of self-portraiture and performance, Marcus also discusses the ways in which fiction and autobiography have shaped each other.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
