Splendour
A moving tale of resistance and renewal, from the acclaimed author of Twelve Words for MossTwo friends, Kenjo and Leah, swoosh through the lush forests at the edge of their village in Kenya. Imitating hornbills and lying on the mossy boulders that line the river, the young girls are watched over by a canopy of ancient trees, whose roots reach into the past, present and future. But this glittering countryside is quickly becoming a haunting. As the armed rebellion against the British colonial regime intensifies, the forest is subsumed in a destructive conflict, disturbing the profound balance of life it nourishes and knowledge it preserves. Forced from their homes, the friends are separated by oceans and decades. Like the branches that once sheltered them, they may be twisted and buckled by violence, but they will also, somehow, endure. This tale of courage, survival and restoration captures the healing – and destructive – power of time and unearths the hidden traces it leaves behind.
Lords of the Ring
'Brilliant and electrifying... I loved every trash-talking, spandex-wearing and body-slamming page of it' Dan Schreiber, Host of 'No Such Thing As A Fish'A behind-the-scenes look at the weird and wonderful world of professional wrestling. Wrestling is at a new peak of popularity, but for years it has operated as an unregulated soap opera with controversial storylines and surprising presentations. It is a world where fact and fiction are regularly blurred, where stereotypes dominate and ruthlessness reigns supreme. But what does this eccentric phenomenon tell us about our society and culture? And why does it matte? n Lords of the Ring, Dan Higgins, makes it his mission to find out. Examining the myriad ways that our social, cultural and political landscape intersects with the sport, he explores how wrestling relates to and has shaped our ideas about gender, race, national identity and sexuality. Higgins also turns to the sport's relationship with politics - including how Donald Trump cultivated a character on the scene - shining a light on the key characters inside and outside of the ropes, as well as their unlikely, unusual and sometimes dark stories.
Hatalom és dicsőség
A labdarúgó-világbajnokság a Föld legnézettebb sporteseménye. A FIFA új, profikat is fogadó tornája új szintre emelte a nemzetközi focit. Nyugat-Németország 1954-es sikere a világba való visszatérést jelentette; Horvátország 1998-as elődöntője pedig a nemzeti öntudatuknak adott hatalmas lökést. Jonathan Wilson a The Guardian és a World Soccer állandó publicistája, valamint a The Blizzard alapító-főszerkesztője. Társműsorvezetője az It Was What It Was futballtörténeti podcastnak és egyike a Libero podcast hét állandó szakértőjének. Futballforradalmak ? A magyar futball aranykora ? A Barcelona-örökség ? Az argentin foci – Argentína futballtörténete a kezdetektől Messiig ? A Liverpool története 10 meccsben ? Kívülállók – A focikapusok története

US Liberty Ship vs German Surface Raider
Fully illustrated, this study examines World War II's most dramatic single-ship action, in which Stephen Hopkins fought a heavily armed German auxiliary cruiser, Stier. When the United States entered World War II, the Battle of the Atlantic was already raging. The so-called ‘Liberty Ships’, built at breakneck speed and in huge numbers during 1941–45, were crucial to the Allied war effort. While the greatest successes of Germany’s auxiliary cruisers occurred in 1939–41, this book describes how one of these ingenious warships, Stier, confronted the Liberty Ship Stephen Hopkins in an epic single-ship duel on September 27, 1942. Stephen Hopkins carried one 4in gun, two 37mm cannon and six machine guns, all primarily intended for antisubmarine and antiaircraft purposes. Stier had six 150mm, one 75mm, one twin 37mm, four single 20mm and four 533mm torpedo tubes. At the end of this grossly uneven fight, Stier had sunk Stephen Hopkins, but was so badly damaged it had to be scuttled. While this battle has garnered much attention, Mark Lardas explores other clashes between the German surface raiders and their Liberty Ship quarry during 1942. Featuring specially commissioned artwork and mapping alongside archive photographs, this lively study investigates the important role both ship types played as the Battle of the Atlantic reached its climax.
