The Porpoise
A motherless girl grows up in isolated luxury, hidden from the world by her wealthy father. She believes their life together is normal – but as time passes, she has a growing sense that something between them is very wrong.
She cannot escape, so she seeks solace in her books. Her favourite tales are those that conjure ancient worlds – of angry gods and heroic mortals, one of whom will some day come to her rescue.
Soon, she will forget where the page ends and her mind begins.
A Mannok
Az 1974-ben született német irodalomtörténész könyve dokumentumokra épülő, különleges családregény, Thomas Mann családjának élet- és kortörténete az 1920-as évek elejétől egészen a huszonegyedik század kezdetéig. Thomas Mann 1905-ben vette feleségül a dúsgazdag müncheni famíliából származó Katia Pringsheimet, és 1919-ig hat gyermeke - három fia és három lánya - született tőle.
Tilmann Lahme a legidősebb gyermekek, Erika és Klaus kamaszkorától követi nyomon a családtagok külön-külön is regénybe illően fordulatos, a német történelemmel szorosan összefonódó és sok szempontból tragikus sorsát. Kronologikus rendben, évről évre, a párhuzamos életrajzok módszerével halad.
Dinoszaurusz-menhely 2.
Egyetlen hiba fenekestül felforgatta a dinoszauruszok sorsát.
Between Two Fires
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village.
An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm-that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict.
Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfil her mission: to confront the evil that has devastated the earth, and to restore to this betrayed, murderous knight the nobility and hope of salvation he long abandoned.
As hell unleashes its wrath, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed, Thomas will find himself on a macabre battleground of angels and demons, saints, and the risen dead, and in the midst of a desperate struggle for nothing less than the soul of man.
Dark Laboratory
Our planet is on the precipice of ecological breakdown and climate despair is at an all-time high. But there are many communities who have survived beyond the environmental destruction wrought on them by colonialism - and they hold the solutions for climate repair.
Using the Caribbean as a case study, Tao Leigh Goffe traces the history of the islands back to the arrival of Christopher Columbus, when the Caribbean became the subject of Western exploitation. Charting the ecological forces that have shaped the islands - from guano to coral reefs, sugarcane to mongooses - and learning from Black, Indigenous and Asian island histories, Goffe makes the argument that the extractivist capitalism that is the origin of the climate crisis is borne from colonial thinking - and that to fight one effectively is to fight both.
Treating the Caribbean as both a warning and a guide, Dark Laboratory is a lyrical, vibrant and urgent investigation into the greatest threat facing humanity.
Niki de Saint Phalle
Niki de Saint Phalle loved pseudo-orders, which she used to arbitrarily assemble terms and pictograms on a sheet of paper. Under the heading "I Love," for example, the sign of a snake could be found next to the emblem for justice, an orange spot for the corresponding color next to two stars as a symbol for astrology. Niki de Saint Phalle A-Z takes the same liberty and puts the many facets of Niki de Saint Phalle's work into the order of the alphabet.
This logical order is deceptive, though. From A as in AIDS to Z as in Zurich Angel, from B as in Bride to V as in Vanitas, a mosaic of concepts emerges that filters out the various levels of meaning in her manifold oeuvre and playfully engages them in mutual commentary.
Minor Black Figures
Over a hot summer in New York a painter falls for a priest
Wyeth is a newcomer to New York, a young Black painter who is trying to find his place in the contemporary Manhattan art scene. He shares a studio with his friends and earns money working for a gallery and an art restorer but he's struggling with his portrait painting, unable to truly capture the life of his subjects.
Then he meets Keating, a white former priest struggling with his faith. The two men seemingly have nothing in common, and yet Keating shows Wyeth how to see the world anew. But as the men grow closer, the differences between them become more stark, until Wyeth and Keating must decide what they are willing to risk - for art and for love.
Better off Dead
Just how many deaths does it take to close a holiday park?
All Lacy wants is to escape to Paris and be with her older sister. But she needs to make some money first, so she takes a summer job at a caravan park in North Wales.
When one of the guests is brutally murdered, rumours start to swirl about the park being haunted. There are sightings of a mysterious figure walking along the clifftops at night and Lacy can’t shake off the feeling that she’s being watched. Could there be some truth to the stories? And can she discover who – or what – the killer is before she becomes the next victim?
Deficit
How can we create a better future - one that truly prioritises health and happiness?
For too long, economic thinkers have left out acts of care - written off as 'women's work' for centuries - from their calculations. The result? Terrible real-world consequences today: crumbling public services, struggling schools and care systems on the brink of collapse.
In Deficit, prominent Danish feminist Emma Holten reveals how and why this happened, and argues that the things that matter - doing homework with your child, checking in on loved ones, talking to a
colleague who doesn't seem well - might seem inconsequential, but are in fact the building blocks of the economy. Urgent and incisive, this is a call to rethink the economic value of care.

Myths, Legends and Tales for a Greener World
Myths, Legends and Tales for a Greener World is a captivating collection of stories, retold by master folklorist Rosalind Kerven, all of which offer a new and inspiring perspective on the climate breakdown that threatens our modern world. Inspired by traditional myths and folklore from across the world and retold with integrity and respect, the stories in this collection offer a hopeful perspective on how we can better appreciate the natural environment and the species that share our planet. The book is split into five chapters: In the Beginning, The World in Trouble, Respect the Earth, Our Animal Relations and World Without End. Among these fascinating tales are a retelling of a Chinese story of dragons that help to control the climate, a spiritual tale about a desert stream from Tunisia, a Canadian First Nations story about the coexistence between humans and bears, and a Norse legend about rebirth in springtime. Each story is accompanied with carefully researched notes, detailing the cultural and historical background and other related tales. This book harnesses time-honoured wisdom to help imagine how we can transcend environmental degradation and species loss, to offer a more harmonious vision of life on earth.

The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz
'Superb and timely' KATE MOSSE'Impressive, important, deeply moving' SARAH WATERS'Brilliant' ANTHONY HOROWITZWhat role could music play in a death camp? What was the effect on those women who owed their survival to their participation in a Nazi propaganda project? And how did it feel to be forced to provide solace to the perpetrators of a genocide that claimed the lives of their family and friends? In 1943, German SS officers in charge of Auschwitz-Birkenau ordered that an orchestra should be formed among the female prisoners. Almost fifty women and girls from eleven nations were assembled to play marching music to other inmates - forced labourers who left each morning and returned, exhausted and often broken, at the end of the day - and give weekly concerts for Nazi officers. Individual members were sometimes summoned to give solo performances of an officer's favourite piece of music. It was the only entirely female orchestra in any of the Nazi prison camps and, for almost all of the musicians chosen to take part, being in the orchestra was to save their lives. In The Women's Orchestra of Auschwitz, award-winning historian Anne Sebba tells their astonishing story with sensitivity and care.

Mosaics in Britannia
Mosaics in Britannia provides an authoritative overview of Romano-British mosaics, including how they were made and maintained, how the craft was organised, the geometric designs and the subject matter, source and significance of the figured pavements. Also considered is the mosaics’ place within the buildings they adorned, and what they tell us about the social dynamics of the residence and baths. The book ends with the fate of mosaics in the late Roman period and thereafter, including their recording upon rediscovery and their display. Although Romano-British pictorial mosaics seldom attain the artistic brilliance of those around the Mediterranean, they often have sophisticated content. Several demonstrate a good knowledge of classical literature, arguably more so than most other provinces, which is perhaps surprising to those who have assumed that Roman Britain was a backwater at the extreme edge of the Roman Empire.
