Antarctic Poliza
Following his stunning photo-safari in Africa and an unprecedented helicopter voyage from Europe to Africa in Eyes over Africa, the award-winning photographer has ventured to the polar regions. With his inimitable blend of intimate close-ups and cinematic landscapes, Poliza leads us through the magical worlds of these frozen paradises most threatened by global warming.
Poliza shows polar bears as they frolicked among purple fireweed against the majestic Arctic backdrop, varied and multicolored icebergs, as well as a number of rare and endangered species.
Poliza once again captures the most vulnerable treasures—still ensconced in our planet’s few pristine landscapes.
Prix Pictet 2009 Earth
Now in its second year, the Prix Pictet, awarded by the Swiss Private Bank Pictet & Cie, aims to use photography to educate audiences worldwide about issues related to climate change. This is the first photographic award on the topic of sustainability, harnessing art’s unique compelling power for the benefit of our precious planet. The theme for this year is Earth, encompassing the planet, the ground beneath our feet, and the ways in which mankind negatively affects the landscape, whether through broken abandoned cities, strip mining, waste dumps or other forms of exploitation. It also refers to the aftermath of natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and volcanoes. The shortlist of the nominees (Darren Almond, Christopher Anderson, Sammy Baloji, Edward Burtynsky, Andreas Gursky, Naoya Hatakeyama, Nadav Kander, Ed Kashi, Abbas Kowsari, Yao Lu, Edgar Martins, Chris Steele-Perkins) was announced in July at the Rencontres d’Arles photo festival in France, and the winner in Paris in October. One of the short-listed photographers will be commissioned to record a sustainability project funded by Pictet & Cie. In this regard Pictet & Cie is proud to support the work that Azafady, a UK charity and Malagasy-registered NGO, is carrying out in Madagascar. Azafady's aim is to enable the poorest communities in Madagascar to develop sustainable ways of living and to increase local access to health care and education.

Making an Elephant
As a novelist, Graham Swift delights in the possibilities of the human voice, imagining his way into the minds and hearts of an extraordinary range of characters. In Making an Elephant, his first ever work of non-fiction, the voice is his own.
Swift brings together a richly varied selection of essays, portraits, poetry, and reflections on his life in writing, full of insights into his passions and motivations, and wise about the friends, family, and other writers who have mattered to him over the years. Kazuo Ishiguro advises on how to choose a guitar, Salman Rushdie arrives for Christmas under guard, and Ted Hughes shares the secrets of a Devon river. There are private moments, too, with long-dead writers, as well as musings on history and memory that readers of Swift’s novels will recognize and love.
Stern FOTOGRAFIE Portfolio No. 59
Heinz Koester’s celebrity photography brought much-needed hope and distraction to the austerity of post-war Germany. His skilful lighting and unique camera angles are still striking to the modern eye. Although very advanced in photographic techniques, Koester treated his subjects with old-world courtesy. “Warts and all” documentary style was not for him. A master of the careful touch-up and flattering composition, these works showcase public figures in a way that’s both intimate and inspiring. Working by day and by night, Koester’s output was monumental. Mighty statesmen, theatrical impresarios, screen legends; his lens captured them all! This collection presents the artistic highlights of a most prolific career.

Each of its ten chapters is headed up by an interview with a leading expert in garden design, architecture, product design or fine art. Snackistan
Hot on the heels of Veggiestan, Sally Butcher brings us Snackistan: a fictitious land where tummies are always full, and there's a slightly naughty smile on every face. Snackistan does not, of course, exist, any more than Veggiestan does. It is, rather, a borderless confederation of the Middle East's favourite foodstuffs. The simple fare that people actually eat on a daily basis: dishes they prepare at home, or cook to share with friends, or look forward to indulging in at the end of the week. We all like to snack - increasingly, formal dining is being nudged aside in favour of meze-style spreads. And, at the same time, street food has come of age. In malls and farmers markets across the world, food on the hoof has become a stylish and popular way to feed. This book picks out the Middle East's most exciting street foods and meze dishes, together with a range of homely and simple snack recipes elicited from family and friends. Chapters comprise Nuts and Nibbles, Fishy Things, Meat on Sticks, Meat Not on Sticks, Salady Stuff, Hot Veggie Dishes, Mostly Carbs, Puds, & Something to Wash it Down With. The burst of flavours is intoxicating, as is Sally's trademark wit and attention to detail - a must-buy for all Middle Eastern food enthusiasts.
B is for Bauhaus
This book is not a dictionary, though it tells you all you need know about everything from Authenticity to Zips. It's not an autobiography, though it does offer a revealing and highly personal inside view of contemporary culture. It's an essential tool kit for understanding the world around us. It's about what makes a Warhol a genuine fake; the creation of national identities; the mania to collect. It's also about the city as seen from the rear view mirror of Grand Theft Auto V; digital ornament and why we value imperfection. It's about drinking a bruisingly dry martini in Adolf Loo's American bar in Vienna, and about Hitchcock's film sets. It's about the modern world of fashion, technology, design and art. Born in London, Deyan Sudjic studied architecture in Edinburgh, edited Domus in Milan, was the director of the Venice architecture biennale, and a curator in Glasgow, Istanbul and Copenhagen. The author of The Language of Things and The Edifice Complex, Deyan Sudjic is now Director of the Design Museum, London.
Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha
Paddy Clarke is ten years old. Paddy Clarke lights fires. Paddy Clarke's name is written in wet cement all over Barrytown, north Dublin. Paddy Clarke's heroes are Father Damien (and the lepers), Geronimo and George Best. Paddy Clarke has a brother called Francis, but Paddy calls him Sinbad and hates him because that's the rule. Paddy Clarke knows the exact moment to knock a dead scab from his knee. Paddy Clarke loves his Ma and Da, but it seems like they don't love each other, and Paddy's world is falling apart.
Change Of Appetite
What happened when one of today's best-loved food writers had a change of appetite? Here are the dishes that Diana Henry created when she started to crave a different kind of diet - less meat and heavy food, more vegetable-, fish- and grain-based dishes - often inspired by the food of the Middle East and Far East, but also drawing on cuisines from Georgia to Scandinavia.
Curious about what 'healthy eating' really means, and increasingly bombarded by both readers and friends for recipes that are 'good for you', Diana disocovered a lighter, fresher way of eating. From a Cambodian salad of prawns, grapefruit, toasted coconut and mint or North African mackerel with cumin to blood orange and cardamom sorbet, the magical dishes in this book are bursting with flavour, goodness and colour. Peppering the recipes is Diana's inimitable writing on everything from the miracle of broth to the great carbohydrate debate. Above all, this is about opening up our palates to new possibilities. There is no austerity here, simply fabulous food which nourishes body and soul.
