V knize „An Evil Cradling“ (Kolébka zla), vydané poprvé roku 1992, vychází autor ze zkušenosti svého věznění. V roce 1985 odjel do Bejrútu, aby na tamní univerzitě vyučoval anglo-irskou literaturu. Po několika měsících byl unesen šíitskými fundamentalistickými milicemi. V zajetí strávil čtyři a půl roku, částečně na samotce, tři roky přikován řetězem ke zdi. Podstoupil mučení psychické i fyzické, ale ve všem se mu stále více vnucovaly hluboké otázky po podstatě lidské svobody. Kniha je výrazně poznačena autorovou bolestivou, ale osvobozující zkušeností zajetí, totální osamělosti a konfrontace s lidstvím jeho věznitelů v podmínkách moderní nelidskosti. Autor prochází sotva představitelnými rozměry ponížení a zoufalství, přesto však nenadbíhá čtenářovu latentnímu voajérství, exhibicí svého utrpení šetří. Keenanova reflektující cesta je svědectvím o tom, že člověk může zvítězit i nad nesmyslností svého utrpení a může dokonce i pocítit nepředstíraný soucit s člověkem, který jej vězní a mučí. Proměna bezmoci v porozumění sobě i druhým - to je podmanivé poselství této knihy. Skvostné jsou pasáže, které nabízejí čtenáři rozkošnické vychutnávání barev v šedivé betonové cele. Mezi nejsilnější témata patří zcela jistě zrod a zrání přátelství autora se spoluvězněm – přátelství Ira a Angličana, konfrontaci dvou světů, dvou stran tradiční barikády. Kniha bývá přirovnávána k dílům Prima Leviho či Artura Koestlera. Ve Velké Británii se stala povinnou četbou pro studenty teologie a medicíny, je zařazena mezi doporučenou četbu k maturitě. Mj. odbourává i tradiční předsudky o nesmiřitelnosti odlišných náboženských postojů, mýty o náboženské podstatě světových konfliktů. Sama se však ujímá funkce mýtu, který „člověka zkroušeného pozvedá“, mýtu o tom, že cesta z podsvětí je možná.

Th ey are the saddest of all toys in the world ever, when their mummies and daddies, those girls and boys, don’t put them away properly. You can perhaps loose a toy or some money by accident, but leaving a toy or even a doll lying somewhere, that is not a done thing among well-behaved children. Not that.
Now, since we all know that sometimes some child, a girl or a boy does that, that is why we want to tell you about one small, lost and poor doll, so that you realize that such things must never be done.
