Frankenstein
Román v sobě propojuje prvky gotického románu a romantického románu (např. utrpení, plynoucí z osamělosti hlavních hrdinů i netvora). Román si klade otázku, jak moc je „stvořitel“ zodpovědný za „stvořené“, a do jisté míry je i varováním před důsledky vědeckých experimentů a sobeckým zaměřením moderního člověka v době průmyslové revoluce, jež je v románu stavěno do kontrastu vůči altruistickým a ušlechtilým činům často obyčejných lidí. Příběh ovlivnil literaturu i popkulturu napříč žánry a inicioval vznik mnoha hororových příběhů a filmů.

Glorious Dead
Laurie Blount, the ''enfant terrible'' of the West End, the voice of a generation, a shining star. Also: dead. Very, very dead. Reeling at being left behind, his husband Jo, best friend Vivi, and goddaughter Rosy must step out from the shadows and begin a new life, at their own pace. But scattered chapters of Laurie''s unpublished memoirs ensure that while he may be dead, he''ll never leave them. Waspish, wicked, and witty, they reveal a side to Laurie nobody really knew - or would admit to knowing. But who''s already had their eyes on them, and is it all really true? Who should his grieving loved ones believe to be the real Laurie - the lovable, arch comedian they knew, or the adulterous, somewhat tragic figure who comes alive on the page?Jo is about to discover he has more in common with his dear departed husband than he ever imagined, and that comedy and tragedy are just the same mistakes, made under different lighting. Those we adore let us down, halos can dim, and pedestals are there to be toppled. If Jo is ever to find peace in the future, he must confront Laurie''s past.PRAISE FOR JUSTIN MYERS''Funny, kind, insightful book, about those who get left behind'' Russell T Davies''The Fake-Up is everything I want from a rom com. Hallucinations
Have you ever seen something that wasn’t really there? Heard someone call your name in an empty house? Sensed someone following you and turned around to find nothing?Hallucinations don’t belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. In some conditions, hallucinations can lead to religious epiphanies or even the feeling of leaving one’s own body. Humans have always sought such life-changing visions, and for thousands of years have used hallucinogenic compounds to achieve them.In Hallucinations, with his usual elegance, curiosity, and compassion, Dr Oliver Sacks weaves together stories of his patients and of his own mind-altering experiences to illuminate what hallucinations tell us about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture’s folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all, a vital part of the human condition. Now part of the Picador Collection, a series showcasing the very best of modern literature.
River of Consciousness
Two weeks before his death, Oliver Sacks outlined the contents of The River of Consciousness, the last book he would oversee. The bestselling author of On the Move, Musicophilia, and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Sacks is known for his illuminating case histories about people living with neurological conditions at the far borderlands of human experience. But his grasp of science was not restricted to neuroscience or medicine; he was fascinated by the issues, ideas, and questions of all the sciences. That wide-ranging expertise and passion inform the perspective of this book, in which he interrogates the nature not only of human experience but of all life.In The River of Consciousness, Dr Sacks takes on evolution, botany, chemistry, medicine, neuroscience, and the arts, and calls upon his great scientific and creative heroes – above all, Darwin, Freud, and William James. For Sacks, these thinkers were constant companions from an early age; the questions they explored – the meaning of evolution, the roots of creativity, and the nature of consciousness – lie at the heart of science and of this book. The River of Consciousness demonstrates Sacks’s unparalleled ability to make unexpected connections, his sheer joy in knowledge, and his unceasing, timeless endeavour to understand what makes us human. Now part of the Picador Collection, a series showcasing the very best of modern literature.

Man
The photos Judith Stanley takes are just for her, a private passion to fill her suburban days. But when she shares them with Paul Sorenson, her new photography instructor, she''s unprepared to hear his astonished praise. ''Stunning,'' he calls her photos. ''Extraordinary.'' She has an uncanny eye, he says, and should consider publication. He could help. Except Judith has no interest in sharing her work; in fact, the mere idea of it frightens her. Still, emboldened by Paul''s encouragement, Judith ventures out beyond her quiet neighbourhood to the city in search of increasingly striking images. When she starts to notice the dark shape of a man in the corner of her self-portraits, Judith is certain he''s an attacker from her past. She doesn''t know why he has returned, but she''s sure of his presence: the hoarse sound of his breathing, his hard grip on her elbow. Perhaps it would appease the man if she were to put her camera down and give up her private passion. But she can''t; she refuses. Until one night when the man finally emerges from the shadows, and Judith''s story suddenly and irrevocably becomes his own. Chilling and heart-poundingly propulsive, The Man is a phenomenal and timely novel exploring the inescapable fear of living as a woman, the tantalizing seduction of artistic freedom and the very real dangers that lurk both inside and outside the confines of the mind.
Volvelle
An impassioned new collection from the Forward Prize-winning poetVolvelle, Rachael Boast’s fifth poetry collection, highlights the need to remember old forms of connection in an era of fragmentation and technological acceleration. Her title embodies something of this in its elegant, recurring consonants – conjuring love, revolve, evolve, the volvelle a circular paper chart of rotating parts for calculating the cycles of the sun and the moon. There are poems here in conversation with Akhmatova, Cocteau, Lorca, Mirabai, Tennyson and Sufi poetry, while others move in the atmospheres of French, Polish and Spanish arthouse cinema. Boast’s coolly passionate collection also explores the need for a sense of place and belonging, and enquires into the overlap between disability and ‘the body politic’ with a fusing of poetry and reportage on global conflicts and ecocide. With a keen sense of roots and interrelatedness, Volvelle circles the question of what it means to stay human in our age of anxiety, unrest and hyper-materialism.
PORTAL
Tracy Fuad’s second collection of poems, PORTAL, probes the fraught experience of bringing a new life into a world that is both lush and filled with gloom. A baby is born in a brutalist building; the planet shrinks under the new logic of contagion; roses washed up from a shipwreck centuries ago are blooming up and down the cape. PORTAL documents a life that is mediated, even at its most intimate moments, by flattening interfaces of technology and in which language—and even intelligence—is no longer produced only by humans. The voices here are stalked by eco-grief and loneliness, but they also brim with song and ecstasy, reveling in the strangeness of contemporary life while grieving losses that cannot be restored. Through Fuad’s frank, honest poetry, PORTAL vibrates with pleasure and dread.
The Franchise
A land filled with magic and dragons and wizards and warriors. Thousands of people live and work within its borders, fearful of their enemies and loyal to their king. The classic fantasy world of The Malicarn has been brought to life on the big screen in a series of phenomenally successful blockbuster movies, almost entirely populated by characters in total belief that their sham fantasy lives are real. A fan-favorite actor finds himself doubting the studio's work, but this franchise has an almost unstoppable momentum, and bringing freedom to a population that already believes itself to be free won’t be as easy as he thinks.

Trauma Industrial Complex
*The new book from the Orwell Prize-Winning author of Poverty Safari and The Social Distance Between Us*Today, trauma permeates media, from music and television to films and books – my own included. While the increasing openness is welcome, I’ve observed that this rise has been accompanied by a parallel explosion of disinformation and sometimes harmful guidance about how to deal with personal trauma. In Trauma Industrial Complex, I ask the question: How did we get here? And are the stories we’re telling ourselves liberating us or keeping us trapped? In this revealing and deeply personal book, I’ll pull back the curtain, sharing the hard-won wisdom I’ve gained from the events brought on by telling my own story.Praise for Darren McGarvey:‘An Orwell for today's poor’ – The Times‘The standout, authentic voice of a generation’ – Herald‘McGarvey is a rarity: a working-class writer who has fought to make the middle-class world hear what he has to say’ – Nick Cohen, Guardian
