The Summer Proposal
The first time I met Max Yearwood was on a blind date. Max was insanely gorgeous, funny, and our chemistry was off the charts. He also had the biggest dimples I'd ever laid eyes on.
Exactly what I needed after my breakup. Or so I thought…Until my real date arrived.
Turned out, Max wasn't who I was there to meet. He only pretended to be until my real date showed up. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Before he left, he slipped me a ticket to a hockey game a few blocks away, in case things didn't work out on my actual date. I tossed the ticket into my purse and went about trying to enjoy the man I was supposed to meet.
But my real blind date and I had no connection. So on my way home, I decided to take a chance and stop by the game. When I arrived, the seat next to me was empty. Disappointed again, I decided to leave at the end of the period. Just before the buzzer, one of the teams scored, and the entire arena went crazy. A player's face flashed up on the Jumbotron. He was wearing a helmet, but I froze when he smiled.
You guessed it: Dimples.
Apparently, my fake blind date hadn't invited me to watch hockey with him; he'd invited me to watch him play. And so began my adventure with Max Yearwood.
Max proposed that we spend the summer helping me forget my ex. It sounded like a good plan. Things couldn't get too serious when we had an expiration date. Right? But you know what they say about the best-laid plans…
The Poetry of Suicide: Lessons in Grief from the Lives and Deaths of Poets
This wise and touching exploration of the relationship between poetry and suicide offers new insights for those struggling with grief.
‘A nuanced and deeply insightful book.’ – Emilie Pine, author of Notes to Self
‘A bold and truly vital work.’ – Adam Farrer, author of Broken Biscuits
‘Essential reading.’ – Anne Whitehead, author of Relating Suicide
Following the loss of his twin sister, J. T. Welsch found himself drawn to the stories of poets who took their own lives. In The poetry of suicide, he interweaves these stories with the long history of suicide in his own family, searching for a new way of understanding these difficult deaths.
Beginning with Hamlet’s ‘To be or not to be?’, he delves into the work of Sylvia Plath, Marina Tsvetaeva and others, asking what it can teach us about suicide’s messy reality. He also explores recent controversies involving suicide, including the response to the Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why and Logan Paul’s notorious visit to Aokigahara, Japan's ‘suicide forest’.
Suicide is more like poetry than we realise, Welsch argues. Both are filled with ambiguities, contradictions and unknowable intentions. Both demand and resist interpretation. Recovering the personal dimension often lost in our sanitised public discourse, Welsch finds practical ways of confronting suicide’s poem-like difficulties.

The Wilderness
In 2008, Desiree, January, Monique and Nakia are in their early twenties and at the beginning. Of their careers, of marriage, of motherhood and of big city lives in New York and Los Angeles. Together, they are finding their way through the wilderness, that period of life when the reality of contemporary adulthood - overwhelming, mysterious and full of freedom and consequences - swoops in and stays. Desiree is estranged from her sister Danielle, and the two nurse bitter family wounds in different ways. January\'s got a relationship with a 'good' man she feels ambivalent about, even after her surprise pregnancy. Monique, a librarian and aspiring blogger, finds unexpected online fame after calling out the university where she works for its plans to whitewash fraught history. And Nakia is trying to get her restaurant off the ground, without relying on the largesse of her upper middle-class family who wonder aloud if she should be doing something better with her life. As these friends transition from young adults to grown women, they must figure out what they mean to one another - amid political upheaval, economic and environmental instability and the increasing volatility of modern life. The Wilderness is Angela Flournoy's masterful and kaleidoscopic follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut The Turner House. A generational talent, she captures with disarming wit and electric language how the most profound connections over a lifetime can lie in the tangled, uncertain thicket of friendship.

Kite Day
Mamus and her son love Kite Days. But conditions have to be right. Sometimes the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, and the day is calling… But it's still not a Kite Day. Sometimes the clouds roll in, and the wind is too strong… And they still try for a Kite Day. But when their string gets tangled and the light gets dim, they must stay inside and wait for their next chance at a Kite Day. Navigating worry, anger, sadness and disappointment, Mamus and her son fly their kite together. While her mood mirrors the kite’s motions – gently rising, twisting in the wind, tangling in a tree, and crashing to the ground – the pair continue to try. Despite the ups and downs, their love is, and will always remain, constant. “Is today a kite day?” I ask Mamus. Her smile is a blossom unfolding. “Let’s go and see,” she says. An honest yet hopeful glimpse into a child’s experience with a parent who has bipolar illness or other mood-related struggles, including concrete suggestions for young readers who are concerned about a loved one, this is a key social and emotional learning (SEL) book for young readers and loved ones navigating a mental health illness.
