Book of Healing
The first book-length study of YorÙbÁ therapeutics, encompassing thousands of remedies for more than 160 different ailments, ÌwÉ ÌwÒsÀn (Book of Healing) was originally published in 1910 by Ìjẹ̀bÚ healer, politician, and public intellectual Joseph OdÙmÓsÙ. Much of the scholarship on African healing cultures has been reconstructed from oral sources and texts produced by missionaries, colonial officials, and anthropologists. Of the handful of firsthand accounts from across all of sub-Saharan Africa that have survived in written form, OdÙmÓsÙ’s is one of the most extensive and encyclopedic. While the existence of OdÙmÓsÙ’s massive work is well-known in southwestern Nigeria, it has not previously been available in English. Michael ỌlÁdẹ̀jọ AfọlÁyan and Helen Tilley have translated the volume in its entirety, and here use it as an entrÉe into greater understandings of YorÙbÁ medicine, spirituality, and print culture during a time of rapid change under British colonialism and the spread of Christianity.
Beyond the Green Transformation
Until very recently, the climate crisis was considered the most serious and urgent challenge facing contemporary societies. There was widespread agreement that a comprehensive green transformation is necessary to address the planetary emergency, secure the survival of humanity and facilitate a good life for all. Yet, suddenly, ecological issues have slipped down the political agenda. Conservatives welcome 'the end of the green hegemony', the far-right rallies against eco-emancipatory policies, and an authoritarian turn that once again champions fossil fuels is gaining momentum across the world. This book examines the causes of this dramatic change of course. It reminds us that in environmental politics, social norms and cultural values ?are as important as biophysical facts. Even if the scientific evidence on climate change and the collapse of biophysical systems is clear, the supposedly categorical imperatives presented by ecologists ultimately express a particular worldview. Ingolfur Blühdorn argues that the emancipatory logic itself is a key driver of the current collapse of the green project. He shows how this counter-cultural project was fraught with inherent contradictions. Eco-emancipatory movements themselves contributed to mainstreaming values, lifestyles and notions of self-determination that ultimately blocked the green transformation and propelled a postliberal turn. To many, eco-political ideals today appear more like a threat than a promise. A renaissance of fossil fuels, autocratic leadership, and strict policies of exclusion seem to offer a better future, beyond eco-emancipatory values and the scenarios of ecological collapse. But the transition to a postliberal modernity will benefit very few and make life brutish, nasty and short for many.
Lincoln and Religion
Abraham Lincoln’s faith has commanded more broad-based attention than that of any other American president. Although he never joined a denomination, Baptists, Presbyterians, Quakers, Episcopalians, Disciples of Christ, Spiritualists, Jews, and even atheists claim the sixteenth president as one of their own. In this concise volume, Ferenc Morton Szasz and Margaret Connell Szasz offer both an accessible survey of the development of Lincoln’s religious views and an informative launch pad for further academic inquiry.
Elin Anna Labba skúma osudy severných Sámov, ktorým do cesty vstúpili nové hranice, a narušili ich prirodzené migračné koridory.
– prečo mnohí Sámovia o tejto temnej histórii dlhé roky mlčali a až ich potomkovia sarozhodli rozprávať
Preto v roku 1919 Švédsko a Nórsko uzavreli dohodu o obmedzení migrácie zvierat a ľudí medzi oboma krajinami. Takto vyzerá pozadie jednej z temnejších kapitol moderných severských dejín. S cieľom vykoreniť kočovné zvyky Sámov nariadili švédske úrady v rámci „dislokácie“ premiestnenie chovateľov sobov z ďalekého severu do južnejších oblastí.
Elin Anna Labba zozbierala spomienky, fotografie, listy i úryvky z tradičných piesní – jojkov, aby skúsila vyrozprávať hlboký a osobný príbeh ľudí, ktorí prišli o všetko, no napriek tomu neprestali veriť, že raz znovu uvidia svoj domov.
Kniha Páni nás sem presídlili vychádza v preklade Adriany Gondárovej.

Without Prejudice
Harvey Brownstone''s story is a tumultuous, sometimes hilarious, and uplifting journey from bullied child to outcast after coming out to his parents, to trailblazing lawyer, to distinguished judge. Brownstone colourfully details his momentous and inventive judicial career marked by his numerous innovations of the justice system, particularly revolutionizing Ontario''s child support enforcement programme. In retirement, he is no longer shackled by the restraints traditionally imposed on the judiciary, and thus Brownstone provides a frank, unfiltered, and refreshing glimpse into the inner workings of the justice system, boldly delineating the strengths and weaknesses of criminal and family courts, both of which he claims are sorely in need of comprehensive reform. His remarkable story, reinventing himself from high-profile judge to highly acclaimed talk show host, is a testament to the resilience and triumph of the human spirit.
