Glory and Dishonour
There have been many books on Victoria Cross heroes but this is the first one to explore the lives of those for whom the greatest accolade did not bring contentment, happiness or lasting fame. Men like the Cheltenham-born Duncan Boyes. The seventeen-year-old Midshipman Boyes won the VC in 1864, carrying the Queen's Colour through withering Japanese fire. Four years later, he would commit suicide by jumping out of a hotel window in Dunedin, New Zealand. How such tragedies unfold – and why – is the essence of this book. How do we judge the actions of Martin Doyle VC MM, for example? At the Battle of the Somme in 1916, under heavy fire, he carried a wounded officer to safety. Later he went to the aid of men in a blazing tank. When a machine gun opened up at close range, preventing the rescue of the wounded, he charged and silenced it, taking three prisoners. He also carried another wounded soldier to safety despite intense fire. Soon, he would be an IRA intelligence officer arranging the deaths of British soldiers. For Victoria Cross holders there is an observation that it is sometimes easier to win the medal than to wear it. Glory and Dishonour shows how true that can be.
Attuned
We are all interconnected and dependent on each other to shape the world in which we live. Yet even though technology has allowed us to digitally share our lives with more people than ever, the result has been a growing pattern of personal isolation, alienation, and division. Why is this? “We are seeing the manifestation of collective trauma,” says luminary Thomas Hübl. “The profoundly complex challenges we face demand a new level of human collaboration.”In Attuned, Hübl shares a visionary guide to healing our struggling world. Attuning to a person, group, or organisation means coming into resonance by listening mindfully to the inner sensations, feelings, images, and information that arise. At the core of the book is the “relational field”? A vast matrix of energy through which information is shared within, around, and between us. In each chapter, you'll find insights and practices for perceiving and tuning in to oneself and others and ultimately contributing to the healing of this field. By embracing our interdependence, we can activate what is needed to respond to and evolve through the challenges of our age. “It may take only a small number of us,” explains Hübl, “to establish a new level of collective coherence? To share our light, heal our wounds, and realise the unawakened potential of our world.”
The Eustace Diamonds
''She liked lies...To lie readily and cleverly, recklessly and yet successfully, was, according to the lessons which she had learned, a necessity in a woman''Lizzie Eustace is young, beautiful, and widowed. Her determination to hold on to the Eustace family''s diamond necklace in the face of legal harassment by her brother-in-law''s solicitor entangles her in a series of crimes - apparent and real - and contrived love-affairs. Her cousin Frank, Tory MP and struggling barrister, loyally assists her, to the distress of his fiancée, Lucy Morris. A pompous Under-Secretary of State, an exploitative and acquisitive American and her unhappy niece, a shady radical peer, and a brutal aristocrat are only some of the characters in this, one of Trollope''s most engaging novels: part sensation fiction, part detective story, part political satire, and part ironic romance. The Eustace Diamonds (1873) belongs to Trollope''s Palliser series. Though often considered the least political of the six novels, it is a highly revealing study of Victorian Britain, its colonial activities in Ireland and India, its veneration of wealth, and its pervasive dishonesty. Cumbernauld From Old Photographs
Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire has seen huge changes over the years. Originally a village built around Cumbernauld Castle and Cumbernauld House, it was designated a new town in 1955 to house people living in poor conditions and war-damaged areas in Glasgow and elsewhere. Its population grew rapidly as construction started and by 1967, when the town centre was opened by Princess Margaret, Cumbernauld was winning awards for its innovative modernist architecture. Construction and expansion has continued in the ensuing years, with some of its original architecture being modified and even rebuilt for the changing requirements of people living in present-day Scotland. In Cumbernauld From Old Photographs the author has drawn on a remarkable selection of old photographs to give a pictorial record of how much the town and the community has changed over the years. Although many of landmarks have remained the same over the years the photographs show the town adapting and evolving with many other buildings being replaced and the pattern of life in the town changing for many too. This fascinating collection of images will be of interest to those who have lived in Cumbernauld or know it well.

Preston's Colourful Past
Historic photographs are a fascinating window into the past and due to the advances in the colourising of images we are nowadays able to see the colourful scene that the camera lens captured. These images bring Preston’s past to life. In the photographs that pioneering photographer Robert Patteson took around the town in the 1860s we can now appreciate the colours that he saw with his own eyes as he focussed his camera lens in Avenham, Winckley Square and beyond. Likewise, those images by the press photographers of the 1920s onwards can now be seen in a cavalcade of colour. All the pomp, pageantry and processions of old produced parades teeming with colourful banners, participants and crowds. Royal visits, military parades and Preston Guilds were all occasions to hang out the bunting and wave the multi coloured flags. The mill girls from Horrockses took part in many a procession and they showed it was not only about clogs, aprons and shawls as they paraded in the colourful fashionable frocks produced by them in their Preston factory and worn throughout the land. This book will take you on a journey into Preston''s colourful past. Life in Preston has always had a dash of colour about it but this does not show it through rose-tinted glasses – here we see the true life of bygone days. These pictures transport you back in time as you reflect on the life of Preston and the lives of folk who have dwelt there.
Stockton-on-Tees: A Potted History
Stockton-on-Tees was a small port and market town in the north-east of England for much of its history. Shipbuilding and other industries gradually established themselves over the years, but it was with the Industrial Revolution that the town received a massive boost. The opening of the pioneering Stockton & Darlington Railway enabled coal to be transported to the port. Industries developed around the discovery of iron ore locally, as well as engineering and potteries, and the population expanded rapidly. The town was transformed by large areas of Victorian dwellings, absorbing neighbouring settlements. By the turn of the twentieth century the town was supported by a thriving market, theatres, pubs, schools, libraries, fairs, parks and churches. The depression of the interwar years and the closure of shipyards saw many lose their jobs, but the period also saw the start of the chemical industry at Billingham, which grew into a vast complex. Although today Stockton has lost much of its traditional industry, sites have been turned into business parks, attracting service industries and a university campus. The story of the town tells of heroes, inventors, business leaders, rioters as well as the lives of ordinary folk. Illustrated throughout, this accessible historical portrait of the transformation that Stockton-on-Tees has undergone through the ages will be of great interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to the town.
Lorenzo Ghiberti
Lorenzo Ghiberti was the most celebrated sculptor of his day – praised by Alberti, admired by peers and trusted with Florence’s most prestigious commissions, including the iconic Baptistery doors. Yet his legacy has often been diminished, cast as a decorative hangover from the Gothic era and overshadowed by Donatello’s perceived Renaissance modernity. This book reconsiders Ghiberti’s achievement by focusing on his mastery of materials and design across bronze, glass, marble and drawing. From complex narrative reliefs to architectural ornament, Ghiberti emerges not just as a skilled craftsman, but as an inventive, multidimensional artist who redefined the possibilities of sculptural storytelling. By understanding him on his own terms, we gain a richer picture of early Renaissance invention and its lasting visual impact.

Raven
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping… In The Raven, Poe’s poetic masterpiece, a distraught lover is visited by a mysterious bird, which does nothing but repeat ‘Nevermore’ again and again, driving the mourning paramour to despair. A poem of startling fame, The Raven is beloved both for its musicality and its atmosphere, and has won the hearts of generations of readers the world over. Ready, Relevant and Resurgent II Shaping
The book is a continuation of Gen Anil Chauhan’s thoughts on the evolving paradigms of future warfare and the need for intellectual and structural foundations that will catapult the armed forces into becoming a modern military. This book titled “Ready, Relevant and Resurgent II; Shaping a future ready force” provides a compelling narrative about the evolving nature and character of warfare, blending timeless military wisdom with futuristic thinking. India`s defence strategy must evolve to confront new-age threats across cyberspace, space and cognitive domains. The articles in the book provide deep insights into new constructs that define the contours of modern warfare such as Air Power’s incipience as a dominant force, cyber-threats becoming a theatre of continuous conflict, intelligentization of warfare and militarization of space.
Síla jména
Nevelké dílo Síla Jména (The Power of the Name) světoznámého autora je skutečnou perlou duchovní literatury; od svého vzniku v roce 1974 se dočkalo řady vydání v angličtině a mnoha překladů.
Sám napsal mnoho článků a knih, např. The Orthodox Church a The Orthodox Way (Cestou ortodoxie).
Everything in Color
Stephanie grew up in an evangelical community where love and obedience were overlapping themes. In this world, sin was inevitable, her body was a temptation, and desire was dangerous. Her own thoughts could not be trusted, because she was only saved if she believed the 'right things' about God. But as she grew, built a life of her own, and fell in love with a young seminarian named James, the complexities of the human experience became impossible to ignore. Was God truly so exacting and judgmental? Could faith exist beyond these rigid borders? Could love be both passionate and pure? Her connection to James—honest, caring, and sensual—became a safe place for her worldview to expand. And when their son was born, she understood love in a whole new way… suddenly, everything was sacred, everything was in colour. Through striking prose and beautiful mixed media illustrations, Stalvey takes us on an emotional journey of faith, romance, motherhood, and loss. With tenderness and honesty, she unravels the fear and guilt woven into her past, reclaims her sense of self, and shows us how to embrace a love that is healing, transformative, and wholly one's own.
Přijel do země zničené konfliktem a chudobou, kde mezi běžné diagnózy patřily podvýživa, malárie, dengue a panovala tu nejvyšší mateřská úmrtnost v Asii.
Mi történik a rizottóban keverés közben?
