Sister Sandra
Sister Sandra Smithson, a Black Franciscan nun from Tennessee, lived her extraordinary life on the forefront of change. A passionate educator, she was committed to working directly with disadvantaged students and strived to reform local and national education policy to better serve these children until her death in 2022 at age 96. Smithson first joined the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1954, one of the only orders of nuns who accepted African American women at the time, and made it her mission to challenge the status quo in her community and her church, even when it put her at great personal risk. In Sister Sandra by Theresa Laurence, Smithson's expansive life and legacy is recorded for the first time, from her educational ministry in South America, to cofounding a nonprofit in Middle Tennessee that served children and advocated for policy change in public education. Thoughtful, opinionated, and beholden only to God's will and her own conscience, Smithson often tread on the margins of society and the church, working throughout her long life to "bring good news to the poor" and raise her voice for the voiceless. She was an unforgettable real-life hero who followed God's call regardless of the power structures stacked against her as a Black woman. At its core, Sister Sandra provides a unique look at the life and work of an African American nun during times of tumultuous change in both the American and the global South. It weaves together an intimate personal narrative of Smithson's life while also documenting the Black Catholic history of Nashville, making this text a singular and essential resource on Catholic Church history in Tennessee, the South, and the US as a whole.
Lost in Ibiza
Ibiza. An island synonymous with celebrity DJs, superclubs and rowdy Ryanair flights. But to stop at the dancefloor is to miss the creative current that powered it in the first place.
For nearly a century, the island has served as a beacon for artistic minds. Before the beats came the Beatniks, hippies and free thinkers who claimed this rock as a refuge for the radical. DJ residencies might reign, but the pillars of the community stretch across creative lines, from culinary innovators and street artists to indie retailers and designers, all surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
LOST iN is your ticket to the real Ibiza where you’ll party with pop surrealists, sip cocktails in a cave, wear threads from a gypsy truck, swim in hidden sea coves and add your tag to the graffiti-bombed ruins of a former superclub. You’ll even step back in time with a ‘70s hippie archive and local legends that speak of Atlantis and a rock that beckons UFOs.
To the world, Ibiza is a party. To those in the know, Ibiza is a living legacy, and you can help write its next chapter. Be bold. Be curious. Get lost on the island that can’t be tamed.
Uncover the real Ibiza with local secrets, hidden beaches, urban art, secret hikes and a legacy of radical reinvention.
A Real Right to Vote
Why it’s time to enshrine the right to vote in the ConstitutionThroughout history, too many Americans have been disenfranchised or faced needless barriers to voting. Part of the blame falls on the Constitution, which does not contain an affirmative right to vote. The Supreme Court has made matters worse by failing to protect voting rights and limiting Congress’s ability to do so. The time has come for voters to take action and push for an amendment to the Constitution that would guarantee this right for all. Drawing on troubling stories of state attempts to disenfranchise military voters, women, African Americans, students, former felons, Native Americans, and others, Richard Hasen argues that American democracy can and should do better in assuring that all eligible voters can cast a meaningful vote that will be fairly counted. He shows how a constitutional right to vote can deescalate voting wars between political parties that lead to endless rounds of litigation and undermine voter confidence in elections, and can safeguard democracy against dangerous attempts at election subversion like the one we witnessed in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. The path to a constitutional amendment is undoubtedly hard, especially in these polarized times. A Real Right to Vote explains what’s in it for conservatives who have resisted voting reform and reveals how the pursuit of an amendment can yield tangible dividends for democracy long before ratification.

Translated from the Spanish by Andrea Rosenberg, Lorente s English debut is a sorrowful yet hopeful portrait of a young adult at a crossroads in life a quintessential loser looking for meaning and redemption in a town full of ghosts.
More Meditations of a Militant Moderate
The book collects almost thirty-five opinion pieces, essays, and two poems by the author on a wide variety of public policy topics written and published between 2006 and 2022. The author, a self-described “militant moderate,” draws on his participation in many public debates. The articles are grouped into six, topical groupings that range widely: the growing need for moderate voices in policy debates; the nature of American exceptionalism; the challenge of civic discourse; the depredations of the Trump’s first term; and policies concerning immigration, citizenship, and refugees.
How Not to Be Human
Current debates in the environmental humanities, animal studies, and related fields increasingly revolve around this question: What to do with “the human”? Is the human a category worth preserving? Should it be replaced with the post-human? Should marginalized and minoritarian groups advocate for a universal humanism? What is the relationship between humanism and anthropocentrism? Is a genuinely non-anthropocentric mode of thinking and living possible for human beings? This book argues that the writings of twentieth-century poet Robinson Jeffers offer twenty-first-century readers a number of crucial insights concerning such questions and timely advice about how not to be human. For Jeffers, our tendency to turn inward on ourselves and to indulge in human narcissism is at the heart of the social, economic, and existential ills that plague modern societies. As a remedy, Jeffers recommends turning ourselves outward—beyond the self and beyond the human—and learning to affirm and even love the inhuman cosmos in all of its terrible beauty. In the process, Jeffers helps us find our way back to ourselves, but this time no longer as “human” in the traditional sense but as plain members of the inhuman world.
