Inside the Mind of Myra Hindley
Inside the Mind of Myra Hindley offers a chilling exploration into the psyche of one of Britain's most reviled criminals. This book meticulously dissects the motivations and twisted thought processes that fuelled her horrific involvement in the Moors Murders, also examining the persistent question of whether she was, in some capacity, a victim of Ian Brady's manipulation. True crime writers Tanya Farber and Jeremy Daniel unpick the complex interplay of sadism and calculated control that defined their partnership, revealing why Hindley remains a figure of enduring fascination and revulsion in true crime history.
Pyongyang on the Brink
A briskly written primer on the North Korean decisions, foreign interventions and accidents of fate which have both threatened and, ultimately, preserved the country's dictatorship. This nimble tour through North Korea's history revisits sixteen knife-edge moments when collapse, reform or war nearly shattered the Kim dynasty. Structured in four acts--from the peninsula's partition in 1945 to Kim Jong-un's 2020 health scare--each chapter reconstructs a crisis and asks, what i? egime change has come within reach far more often than we realise: defeat in the Korean War, leadership challenges in 1956, aborted coups, unrest during a currency crisis--even an armed clash with the US in the 1990s. Kim Il-sung's acclaimed biographer, Fyodor Tertitskiy, guides readers through these events, and explores why change failed to materialise on each occasion. His narrative blends the twists and turns of palace intrigue and battlefield drama with crystal-clear dissections of ideology, institutions and great- power competition. Drawing on Korean, Russian, Chinese and Japanese sources, Tertitskiy offers nuance without special pleading. By tracing the decisions, miscalculations and foreign interventions that locked the peninsula into stalemate, Pyongyang on the Brink offers a swift, fresh look at deterrence, engagement and the future of millions living under the Kims' yoke. Is North Korea truly doomed to never-ending tyranny?

This new translation of her finest stories showcases the profound sensitivity, lyrical eye and classical elegance of a revered Japanese writer.Vividly evoking the colourful festivals and salty street banter of Tokyo's turn-of-the-century red-light district, delicately eliciting its inhabitants' quiet yearning and regret, Higuchi introduces us to children losing their innocence, working-class women losing their livelihoods, and teahouse courtesans losing their hearts. In her clear-eyed vision of the world, longing and memory are what save us.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Translated by Bryan Karetnyk.Ichiyo Higuchi (1872-1896) was born into a prosperous family whose fortunes declined sharply over the course of her childhood. In an effort to shore up the family finances, Higuchi began publishing her short stories, which quickly earned her a reputation as a major new writer. Over a brief period she wrote some twenty-one stories, thousands of poems and an extensive diary. She died of tuberculosis shortly after the beginning of this brilliant literary career, aged only twenty-four.
