Looking at Women, Looking at War

WINNER OF THE ORWELL PRIZE WITH A FOREWORD FROM MARGARET ATWOOD 'This book would always have been important evidence that the Ukraine people were suffering criminal attack. Written by a poet, it is also a work of literature, published after the author lost her life doing her research. It is an icon of a young woman's heroism' Philippa Gregory Destined to be a classic, a poet's powerful look at the courage of resistance. When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Victoria Amelina was busy writing a novel, taking part in the country's literary scene, and parenting her son. Then she became someone new: a war crimes researcher and the chronicler of extraordinary women like herself who joined the resistance. These heroines include Evgenia, a prominent lawyer turned soldier, Oleksandra, who documented tens of thousands of war crimes and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, and Yulia, a librarian who helped uncover the abduction and murder of a children's book author. Everyone in Ukraine knew that Amelina was documenting the war. She photographed the ruins of schools and cultural centers; she recorded the testimonies of survivors and eyewitnesses to atrocities. And she slowly turned back into a storyteller, writing what would become this book. On the evening of June 27th, 2023, Amelina and three international writers stopped for dinner in the embattled Donetsk region. Whena Russian cruise missile hit the restaurant, Amelina suffered grievous head injuries, and lost consciousness. She died on July 1st. She was thirty-seven. She left behind an incredible account of the ravages of war and the cost of resistance. Honest, intimate, and wry, this book will be celebrated as a classic.

Lucian Freud - Drawing into Painting

Drawing into Painting reveals Lucian Freud’s lifelong focus on the human face and form, tracing the intimate dialogue between his sketches and paintings from the 1930s to the early 21st century. Lucian Freud (1922–2011) is celebrated as one of the great figurative realist artists of the twentieth century, who devoted his artistic life to portraiture. Famously stating that ‘everything is a portrait’, he created intensely observed portraits of animals and plants, as well as his family members and those in his social circle and daily life. Drawing into Painting explores how drawing remained central to Freud’s artistic practice throughout his life. From quick sketches to finished works in charcoal, pastel, and etching, his drawings offer a rare window into his process, revealing shifts in style, experimentation, and his evolving way of seeing. Spanning from his childhood to his final years, the book traces the unconventional path from his drawing practice to his painting, and back again. Alongside a selection of key paintings by Freud and others, the book includes conversations with David Dawson, Freud’s close friend and assistant, and Bella Freud, the artist’s daughter. Insightful essays by writer and curator Catherine Lampert, British Museum drawings curator Isabel Seligman, and acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín further illuminates Freud’s world and legacy.

Love Letters of Kings and Queens

Tender, moving, heartfelt and warm (and sporadically scandalous and outrageous too), these are the private messages between people in love. Yet, they are also correspondence between the rulers of nations. From Henry VIII's lovelorn notes to Anne Boleyn and George IV's impassioned notes to his secret wife, to Queen Victoria's tender letters to Prince Albert and Edward VIII's extraordinary correspondence with Wallis Simpson - these letters depict romantic love from its budding passion to the comfort and understanding of a long union (and occasionally beyond to resentment and recrimination), all set against the background of great affairs of state, wars and the strictures of royal duty. Here is a chance to glimpse behind the pomp and ceremony, the carefully curated images of royal splendour and decorum, to see the passions, hopes, jealousies and loneliness of kings and queens throughout history. By turns tender, moving, heartfelt and warm (and sporadically scandalous and outrageous too), these are the private messages between people in love. Yet they are also correspondence between the rulers of nations, whose actions (and passions) changed the course of history, for good and bad. This morning I received your dear, dear letter of the 21st. How happy do you make me with your love! Oh! my Angel Albert, I am quite enchanted with it! I do not deserve such love! Never, never did I think I could be loved so much. Queen Victoria to Prince Albert (28 November 1839)

Weapons of Mass Deception

Mistrust of the democratic electoral process has become rampant among Americans, particularly Republican voters. This trend carries profound consequences: widespread disputes over election results and resistance to the peaceful transfer of power threaten to undermine the very fabric of American democracy. It is, therefore, essential to understand why mistrust is spreading. No analysis is complete without a thorough accounting of the role of right-wing media in US politics.Weapons of Mass Deception challenges the conventional wisdom that right-wing media outlets like Breitbart News and Fox News function primarily as news organizations, using empirical analysis to demonstrate how they more closely resemble political organizations. Analyzing nearly four million online articles published by thirty major right-wing media outlets, Yunkang Yang finds that disinformation consistently ranked among the highest engagement stories between 2017 and 2020. Internal emails, Federal Election Commission filings, legal documents, and conversations between right-wing media employees illuminate the organizational patterns and practices underlying this data. Yang highlights the risk of "privatized political patronage," as platforms pursue both profits and strategic political objectives on behalf of their funders, owners, managers, and political allies. He further reveals the complexities of the right-wing media sphere and argues that when these goals align across networks, they can form a powerful political machine capable of misleading millions of Americans.Ultimately, this book reveals how organizations spread disinformation for partisan aims by exploiting the credibility afforded to traditional journalism, and it lays the framework for understanding how disparate right-wing media outlets coalesce into a unified weapon of mass deception.

Their ailing patriarch is Phillip Prys, the once-famous writer unexpectedly eclipsed first by voguish Salman Rushdie, and second by a massive stroke. The Island

Winner of the 2024 Warren-Brooks Award for Outstanding Literary CriticismWinner of the Northern California Book Award for General Nonfiction'The Island makes an outstanding contribution to our knowledge of both Auden's intentions and his achievement in the first part of his writing life.' Andrew Motion, New Statesman'Jenkins, miner-like, digs down into the verse and brings every influence up to the surface . . . a richly striated landscape, not only in complexity of mood, but also courtesy of its cast of strange, dazzling and sometimes highly dubious characters.' Rachel Cooke, ObserverNicholas Jenkins's The Island is daring in its ideas, written with loving tenderness and implacably true in its revisionism. Jenkins shows Auden's mentality to have been graven by the Great War, proves his youthful aspiration to become an English national poet and renews our sense of the numinous.' Richard Davenport-Hines, TLS, Books of the Year'[The Island is] a dense, detailed and hugely rewarding account of the making of this very English poet before he became an American one.' Peter Parker, TLS Books of the Year'In The Island (Faber, L25), an epic study of the young W.H. Auden, Nicholas Jenkins brilliantly scales up fine-grained literary criticism into wide-angled cultural history.' Boyd Tonkin, SpectatorA groundbreaking reassessment of W. H. Auden's early life and poetry, shedding new light on his artistic development as well as on his shifting beliefs about political belonging in interwar England. W. H. Auden is a towering figure in modern literary history with a complex private self. Hannah Arendt wrote that he had 'the necessary secretiveness of the great poet'. The Island lays bare for the first time some of the most telling 'secrets' of Auden's early poetry, his world, his emotional life, his values and the sources of his art. In a book that is an argument but also a story, Nicholas Jenkins gives compelling readings of iconic poems. He presents Auden in the inter-War years as both a visionary writer, creatively dependent on dreams and intuitions, and a traumatized poet, haunted by war and suffering, and shadowed by his outsider status as a privileged but queer man. The Island considers, as well, Auden's imaginative flirtations with a lyrical nationalism appealing to a poet who, for a while, felt his psyche was like a map of English culture. The narrative ends in Auden's disillusionment with these potent myths and beliefs and the time when he left 'the island'. Auden's preoccupations - with the vicissitudes of war and the problems of love, belonging and identity - are of their time but they still resonate profoundly today. 'A superb, deeply researched study of Auden's early work and identity. Jenkins's understanding of young Auden as a poet shaped and haunted by the First World War - assimilating the influence of Wilfred Owen, Edward Thomas, Robert Graves, and W. H. R. Rivers - is convincing, original, and poignant. Fusing biography, cultural history, and literary criticism in innovative and elegant ways, The Island is a landmark publication in modernist studies.'Heather Clark, author of Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath'Nicholas Jenkins is one of our most perceptive and resourceful critics. In this wonderful study of the early Auden, he brings to bear history, biography, and an acute sense of the artistic moment to fashion for us a young genius who is conservative, bucolic, gay, a patriotic adherent of post-imperial Little England. Most people work backwards from a writer's ultimate reputation, but Jenkins gives us a new, unexpected image of a poet developing in the aftermath of World War I and the collapse of modernism.'Edmund White, author of The Humble Lover'The Island is a Copernican Revolution in Auden studies, a revelatory and often exciting book that presents a new and convincing account of Auden's early years. It explores, for the first time, the deep connections between the inner workings of
