Inside Red Bull Racing

Praise for Nazaré: Life and Death With the Big Wave Surfers, by Matt Majendie: WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR NOMINEE A SUNDAY TIMES SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Like an action movie with a fast-paced pulse-racing soundtrack' - The Times 2000 workers, 24 races, two drivers, one target. In 2025, critically acclaimed writer Matt Majendie spent a season behind the scenes with Formula One team Red Bull Racing during one of the most controversial and dramatic years in the history of the sport. No journalist has been given the level of access that Majendie enjoyed as he found himself walking the secretive corridors of the hi-tech team factory in the UK; trackside at race after race; inside the garage, on the driver's luxury yachts, and even racing the streets of Monaco with Max Verstappen, the greatest driver of this, and perhaps any, era, as he chases history. Join Majendie on the pit wall as Christian Horner's dominant reign as team supremo finally runs its course, as drivers come and go - youngster Liam Lawson brutally axed after just two races - and Verstappen wrestles with the limitations of a car that refuses to be tamed, fighting with rivals like Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, taking the season down to its final minutes. From mechanics to engineers, race strategists to team leaders, head honchos to the thousands who ensure the machine turns, this is F1 racing as you've never seen it.

The Blind Spot

A gripping new account of oligarchy from ‘the most astute social scientist studying the phenomenon today’ (Guardian) The wealthy and powerful few have dominated the masses throughout most of human history. This is starkly visible now more than ever – today, the gulf between oligarchs and the average citizen is vastly larger than any gap that existed during European serfdom or the slave society of Imperial Rome. The strange thing is: for the first time in history, this domination is accomplished through democracy. Yet we aren’t in open revolt against the system. In fact, we keep voting to prop it up. Why? In The Blind Spot, political scientist Jeffrey A. Winters delivers an urgent, incisive account of how we reached this era of in-your-face oligarchy, exposing how modern democracy was designed to protect the interests of the ultra-rich. Tracing the evolution of oligarchy through the democratic era, he demonstrates how the power of the wealthy isn’t just a flaw in our democracy, it was built into its very foundations. Now, in an extraordinary paradox, we exist in a state of ‘participatory inequality’: a world in which 99.99% of us participate openly and freely – democratically, even – in our own ongoing economic exclusion. But powerful change can begin when we have a clear understanding of where we are and where we deserve to be. As well as shining a light on just how bad our political reality has become, The Blind Spot introduces bold ideas for how we might shift the balance. Even though oligarchs may not cede power willingly, this period of shocking inequality is, Winters shows, an opportunity for genuine, enduring change.

Lion Heart

Lion Heart is the bold and uplifting memoir of Cam Whitnall, a man whose life has been defined by extraordinary bonds with wildlife and a dramatic warzone rescue that brought five lions to safety in the UK. 'If you know what to look for, a lion's face tells you everything. The eyes, the scars, the shape. Their faces tell the truth about survival, control and what it costs to exist in a world shaped by humans. Everything I've chosen to do with my life comes back to that. Because once you've really learned how to look at a lion, and understood the story written across its face, walking away stops being an option.' When Cam's grandparents bought a dilapidated zoo, once known as the worst in the UK, and brought it back to life, they also created a home for their family. Cam grew up on the grounds, now known as Hertfordshire Zoo, in a bedroom overlooking the tiger enclosure. His childhood playground, where he and his brothers would play hide-and-seek after hours, was filled with endangered species from around the world. He built deep connections with the animals in their care, even hand-rearing a lion cub called Zara, an experience which inspired a lifelong fascination with big cats. Over the years, the family business expanded as they also took on The Big Cat Sanctuary with Cam taking the helm as director. He and the sanctuary made global headlines for leading a high-risk rescue mission of five abandoned lions from war-torn Ukraine. The lions were found in states of shellshock and malnourishment and had likely been used for illegal breeding. After ten months of dedicated effort, Cam united Rori, Yuna, Vanda, Amani and Lira in their forever home at the sanctuary and gave them the freedom to walk on grass for the very first time. A momentous milestone in a lifetime dedicated to animal welfare, conservation and rescue.

The Last Titans: Churchill and de Gaulle

A compelling dual biography of Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle that shines new light on two of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were thrown together by war. Their triumph over Hitler ensured their achievements will never be forgotten. But their story is far richer than victory alone. De Gaulle - tall, awkward and incorruptible - had traits often associated with the English. Churchill - short, witty and charming - was a true French-style politician. Their working relationship was rarely smooth, but mutual respect ran deep despite their differences. In this brilliantly absorbing account, prize-winning historian Richard Vinen casts new light on these exceptional men and the nations they led. By weaving their two stories into one, The Last Titans offers a fresh and exhilarating exploration into who they were, what they accomplished and the legacies they left behind.

This is Also a Love Story

‘Deeply moving and necessary’ ANNE ENRIGHT ‘A must-read’ iPAPER ‘Original and heart-warming’ LINDSEY HILSUM ‘Remarkable … the perfect antidote to our times’ CHRISTINA LAMB From the Orwell Prize-winning author of My Fourth Time, We Drowned comes a powerful account of human resilience, capturing our capacity for love and connection against all odds. We live in an era defined by crisis – whether it be war and displacement, or climate collapse and rapidly widening inequality. Acclaimed international correspondent Sally Hayden has spent her career covering some of the darkest moments of our time, and yet even in the face of unimaginable adversity, she’s witnessed the love and care of everyday people. Hayden introduces us to a couple separated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a mother in northeast Nigeria who risks everything to save her daughter from forced marriage to Boko Haram militants. We meet a group of Syrian women searching tirelessly for their missing spouses and children, while launching a call for justice, and learn about letters from the bereaved to the dead, still being written over a decade after the tsunami that devastated Japan. In stories that crisscross the globe, from Uganda to Lebanon, Rwanda to Iraq, Hayden asks us: what if news was recounted through the actions people take for those they love? Would it become harder to dehumanise those who seem different to us? This is Also a Love Story dares us to recognise how love can be found in even the most difficult of times, and to question what might be needed to create a better world. ‘Shows us that in the midst of war, around the most acute suffering, there is also tremendous heroism’ NATHAN THRALL, author of A Day in the Life of Abed Salama ‘ Sally Hayden uncovers miracles. She may be one herself’ ALEX PERRY, author of Blood Will Flow ‘A beautifully penned tribute to what can keep us human in the face of catastrophe. Read this book to lighten your soul’ ANTONY LOEWENSTEIN, author of The Palestine Laboratory

Forgotten Forests

Ancient trees, some over a thousand years old, are dotted around the British Isles, the last survivors of a lost world. Now, new scientific studies of these trees and of fossilised forests and of our oldest wooden artifacts can help us to understand the many woodlands that have disappeared from our landscapes. Locked in ice for more than twenty thousand years, the lands that now make up Britain and Ireland were some of the last settled by humans. The earliest people, Mesolithic hunter-gatherers like Cheddar Man, arrived around eleven thousand years ago to find dense forests. While they lived lightly, they did introduce fire, which they used to create clearings, and this was the beginning of the reshaping of Britain’s forests. When Neolithic farmers migrated to Britain from Europe some six thousand years ago, it meant a violent end to the hunter-gatherers’ way of life. It also indicated a dramatic change for the ecosystems. Forests were cleared for fields, trees and plants fed to livestock and predators hunted. A wild, forested world became one of agriculture and villages. As humans learned to work bronze, then iron, they also used wood in myriad ways, building homes, then cathedrals, hand tools then furniture and early machines, boats and eventually immense ships. The forests of Britain and Ireland fuelled the burgeoning human civilisation, from the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Normans, to the British, Scottish, Welsh and Irish peoples through to the present day. In that time our woodlands have changed beyond recognition, but clues to their story remain. Biologist and Britain’s first senior officer for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Jonathan Mullard retraces the history of the forgotten forests of Britain and Ireland, piecing together historical records going as far back as the written word and archaeological evidence going back far further. The result is a wealth of arcane anecdotes and the latest scientific understanding of our natural history, as well as a fascinating journey through the forests, landscapes and human history of Britain.
