Travels and Natural History Around the World
Anthony Roberts started travelling soon after he was born. He had his first six birthdays in different counties in England and Scotland as his father was in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. And then came a very difficult period when after TB and his parents’ divorce he returned to Essex with almost no family income. Living on the edge of Epping Forest from the age of eight an interest in the birds, bees and trees became apparent – and continued throughout his life. Foreign travel started with annual visits to Europe with his local Scouts and then with a scholarship to Paris to study French. And then with other scholarships real travel started with a visit to Arctic Lapland with the British Schools Exploring Society when he finished school. This was the first of more than twenty expeditions to thirteen countries, mainly as the doctor and scientist, during his long life. Travel also developed with sport, with study, with work and finally with the joy of travelling and seeing the geography and the people in countries around the world – often decades apart. And always noticing and recording the natural history seen. He has spent more than eight years of his life overseas in 119 countries on seven continents and has spent more than a year under canvas as well as some interesting situations in Sarajevo during their War and also in Azerbaijan, Haiti and Kosovo. And then came Covid and that was the reason that his memoirs were written. He has had a fascinating life which still continues.

The Mate
Sir Jameson. Commander Adams. Bill. The Mate. You won’t have heard of him – yet, in those curious ways history has of connecting us all, chances are you have benefited in some way from the remarkable things he did in his extraordinary life. To tell the story of Jameson Adams is to tell the story of twentieth-century Britain – adventure and exploration, politics and war, poverty and opportunity, employment and health. After running away to sea as a teenager, he worked his way up through the Navy to play a pivotal role in defending the British coast. In 1907, he was chosen by Shackleton himself to be the Nimrod Expedition’s second-in-command, venturing further into the Antarctic than anyone had gone before. Prime Minister Lloyd George personally selected Adams to transform the struggling Munitions Department during the First World War, while his 25-year career with the Ministry of Labour alongside Churchill and Beveridge laid the foundations for the Welfare State. This is a story of adventure and adversity; of courage, care and compassion; of the belief in a better future for everyone – and of always believing in humanity and hope
The Paranoid Style in American Politics
The classic and very funny account of the dark side of American politics
'Calm, clear, dispassionate and devastating - and a joy to read' Harper's
'Brilliant and influential … his evisceration of populism has found a new generation of readers' Guardian
'American political life … has served again and again as an arena for uncommonly angry minds'
How can a country be captured by rumours, surreal conspiracy theories and the most brazen of conmen? The historian Richard Hofstadter asked these questions in the 1960s, amid fears of rising extremism in America. Yet his dazzling dissection of the paranoid worldview - a brew of overheated exaggeration, suspicion and perceived victimhood that can derail entire nations - is a lesson for the ages in the seductive politics of the irrational.
In an era where we ourselves feel assailed by endless paranoid public statements it is comforting to read Hofstadter's incisive refusal to see these as something new. In his discussion of famous and obscure untruths, some of which have profoundly impacted American domestic and foreign policy, he provides the antidote for the present day.
'The Paranoid Style in American Politics' was first published as an essay in Harper's Magazine in late 1964 and has been argued over ever since.

The God of Wild Places
A pastor walks out of the church and into the woods, in pursuit of the God he's lost. Millions of Americans, disillusioned with organized religion, yearn for meaning and transcendence in their lives, and many of them are finding that in nature. When pastor and theologian Tony Jones, PhD, had his crisis of faith, brought on by personal trauma and broken relationships, he sought solace in the outdoors—paddling a canoe, hunting with his dog, butchering deer. When he walked out of the church and into the woods, he left the orderly pews and numbered hymns for chaotic spaces and untamed wilderness. And he re-discovered God — a God who brings peace in the midst of storms, a God who lives in the community of our fellow creatures, a God who's acquainted with death. This is the God of wild places. In The God of Wild Places, Tony mines his own experiences, recent research in evolutionary psychology, and ancient wisdom from various spiritual and philosophical traditions to fashion lessons about solitude, the predator-prey relationship, the importance of place, risk, failure, and death, and the chaotic presence of God. Tony's guidance in The God of Wild Places promises to introduce a generation of Americans to the transcendence available only in untamed spaces; his writing draws on wisdom from Christianity to Buddhism, Kant to Cioran, Jim Harrison to Annie Dillard. This is a journey of loss and discovery through forests and fields, lakes and streams, from knowing to unknowing, from finding to losing—from life to death, and then back to life. This new paperback edition features a fresh preface from Tony, reflecting on the book’s reception and the continuing search for the divine in nature.
Strangers on the Shore
A genre-blending work of autofiction and memoir from the cult author of The Giro Playboy'Essential reading for new dads' LIAS SAOUDITotally sublime. Every sentence radiates' RICHARD MILWARD'A book that changes how you see the world' ALI MILLAR'A rare, companionable and gorgeous book' ROB DOYLEIn Strangers on the Shore, Michael Smith - author of cult classic The Giro Playboy, which captured the arty demi-monde of Shoreditch gentrifying into a hipster hellscape - stays one step ahead of the property developers as he stumbles through the uncanny psychic landscape of Hastings, in an astonishing work of autofiction that explores the experience of becoming a father and the disarming grief of leaving your youth and its dreams behind. The flâneuring Michael at the centre of the book has moved down to the 'dogshit capital of the South Coast,' started a family and opened a bar. He finds himself pouring wine in a 'drinking town with a fishing problem,' philosophising, procrastinating, morbidly obsessed with Aleister Crowley, who died in poverty in a BnB in this shabby seaside resort full of artistes and occult morris dancers. A book about what it is like to live on the margins, sliding into a precarious middle age in turbulent times, both giving up and starting a-new, Strangers on the Shore is deeply and unashamedly romantic, whilst also angry about the dystopian Britain we've sleepwalked into. Revered by Andrew Weatherall as 'the acid house Montaigne' and The Idler as 'Rimbauld on the dole,' Michael Smith has written an endlessly moving book of transcendent beauty about fathers and songs and the pleasures of an introspective life.

When She Remembered
When She Remembered showcases an intertwined group of seven influential women, from well-known figures such as Simone Veil to memory activist Sabine Zlatin, who shaped the production of Holocaust memory in France from 1945 to the present. Most of these women began their memory work immediately after the war by testifying at perpetrator trials and when monuments were commissioned. In the subsequent decades, their work transformed from personal memory projects to large-scale, politically driven initiatives. Through decades of engagement with Holocaust memory, these seven individuals ensured the stories of Jewish women were featured in the greater wartime narrative. In doing so, they deliberately shifted the French discourse on the Holocaust away from a focus on victimization and resistance to female agency during the fight for survival under Nazi occupation. Alongside other activists, these women became political actors by pushing the state to reckon with the legacy of French complicity in the deportation of Jews. Pulling from diverse archival sources as well as material culture and oral histories, When She Remembered convincingly reveals why the themes of gender, resistance, and memory continue to resonate widely in French history.

But there was one problem. To make the journey, he would have to confront a secret fear that had quietly shaped his life. On the pitch, The Last Ditch captures the drama of a hurling season for the ages and a football championship that tested even the most loyal supporters - a landscape of unlikely triumphs, renaissances, shocks, cliffhangers and heartbreak. Off the field, it becomes something deeper: one man's reckoning with middle age, masculinity and a crippling travel phobia that for two decades had dictated the span of his quiet, rural existence.
