Nevšedné príbehy zachytávajú dávno zabudnuté časy a prchavú atmosféru miest v Európe, v Maďarsku a Budapešti, pričom naša ľudská podstata ostáva nemenná. Dezső Kosztolányi na sklonku svojho života písal najmä novely. Posledné kompletné súborné vydanie ich obsahuje 242. Kosztolányi do knižného vydania v roku 1933 zaradil 35 noviel. Tie vyšli aj v slovenskom preklade Karola Wlachovského pod názvom Večerné romance. Zostavenie nového slovenského výberu pod názvom Nevšedné príbehy, urýchlila vedecká monografia Kosztolányi Dezső od Mihálya Szegedy-Maszáka.
