The Serial Killer Gene

I should never have taken that DNA test. Then maybe things wouldn't have gone so wrong… Lily thought she was an ordinary woman with an ordinary life. But when a DNA test seems to reveal she carries the 'serial killer gene', she is terrified by the thought of passing it onto her future children. She decides to break off her engagement and move back in with her devoted mother, Eva — until unexpected sparks fly with a charismatic journalist, and Lily finds herself diving into a wild, intoxicating new relationship. Their obsession soon turns toxic, and as they spiral out of control Lily’s traumatic past resurfaces, leaving her questioning everything she thought she knew. Could she be the monster she fears she is? Confronted with a sudden, horrifying murder, Lily's only choice is to turn to the one person who has always protected her: her mother. But Eva is hiding secrets that could destroy them both… From the bestselling author of The Serial Killer's Wife, this is a new gripping psychological suspense about compulsion, betrayal, and whether blood really is thicker than water — perfect for fans of Lisa Jewel, K.L. Slater, and B.A. Paris.

Brave and Bold

A hundred years. Thousands of women. One extraordinary pond. I have learned about peacocks and terrapins, giant cobras and booming widgeons; I have heard about celebrity spottings and al-fresco lovemaking and digestive biscuits. These things make up the history of the Ladies’ Pond, but they also give us an insight into a hundred years of women’s lives. From code breakers to cake bakers, I have learned that there is no such thing as a ‘normal woman’; and over the last hundred years the Pond has played host to thousands of remarkable people. For a century, the Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath has welcomed women from every walk of life: artists and activists, swimmers and sunbathers, friends and free spirits. As Britain’s most famous female open-air swimming spot, a pocket of wildness tucked away in the middle of the city, it has long attracted adventurous swimmers from all over the UK and the wider world. Brave and Bold celebrates one hundred years of this beloved London landmark through the rhythm of a single swimming year, from frozen Januarys to sun-drenched midsummers; through friendships, feminist activism and the exhilaration of open water. Created in collaboration with the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond Association and rich with previously unseen archive material and new interviews – from Dolly Alderton and Amy Liptrot to lifelong swimmers of every era – this is far more than the story of one pond. It’s a story of community, women and wild water across a century of social and political change, from suffragettes to soap stars, war to liberation, and shared flasks of tea to acts of quiet rebellion. Brave and Bold is both a love letter to Hampstead Heath and to every woman who has ever felt most at home bobbing about in open water.

The Visionaries

'A gripping, behind-the-curtain story of the men and women who rebuilt the world after the carnage of World War II—and, in the process, engineered an age of unprecedented peace and prosperity. A must-read for anyone trying to understand how stability is built, how prosperity scales, and how we can protect what those architects created. Essential reading for anyone who cares about leadership and the future.' Anthony Scaramucci, former White House Communications Director______Although the Second World War was still a long way from being won, even by early 1941, US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was already planning for peace. America’s entry of the war may still have been almost a year away, but he could already see the new world order that needed to emerge from the smouldering ashes of Europe. The business of war was very quickly going to have to become the business of peace. Three years later, under the guidance of his successor, President Harry S. Truman, the Marshall Plan would emerge, a forward-thinking combination of global philanthropy and canny self-interest, rooted in a profound sense of Christian and moral duty, and which kickstarted unprecedented European growth and a chance for the world as a whole to rebuild after the ruinous catastrophe of war. From the world on the eve of war in 1914 through to the Versailles Treaty and the global financial catastrophe of the late 1920s and early thirties, and the political earthquakes that followed, The Visionaries takes a broad sweep of history with important lessons for today. It’s a reminder that while history does not repeat itself, patterns of human behaviour certainly do. James Holland’s knowledge of the Second World War and its aftermath gives him unique insight into the far-reaching consequences of the financial policies of Roosevelt and Truman. The sustained period of economic stability they initiated delivered peace to the western democracies for over eighty years and stand in stark contrast to our transactional approach to the world today.

The Women Are Not Fine

The women in Nagyrev are desperate. They are suffering. The Women Are Not Fine brings together newspapers, court documents and police records to explore "one of the biggest mass poisoning events in modern history" when midwife Zsuzsanna Fazekas arrived at the village of Nagyrév in Hungary in 1911. When Fazekas began listening to the problems women were having at home, she offered a solution - arsenic - and a group of women, who became known as the "Angelmakers", began poisoning their husbands. Nearly 20 years later, it had turned into an epidemic, spiraling into the greatest poisoning case of the 20th century. In 1929, after an anonymous letter was sent to a newspaper in a nearby town, Szolnok, a police investigation unearthed 50 graves; 40 showed signs of arsenic poisoning. But estimates say that up to 300 people in Tiszazug -- a rural region south of Budapest, along the Tisza River -- may have been killed. Nagyrév was dubbed "the murder district" of Hungary. More than 100 women were held in Szolnok prison, charged with murder.

For God's Sake

"I feel guilty all the time, even when I'm not doing anything wrong..."Are you navigating fear, shame, and isolation in the aftermath of harmful experiences in religion? Are you so used to suppressing your own needs and emotions, that you don't know how to express them anymore? Author, therapist, and religious trauma survivor, Anna Clark Miller has been where you are. The descendant of two generations of missionaries, Anna grew up feeling spiritually inadequate, terrified of unseen threats, and ashamed of her discontent as a missionary kid. When, in adulthood, she started reckoning with the religious harm she'd experienced, it was terrifying at first. But instead of experiencing deeper suffering, she found incredible restoration. For God's Sake: Recovering from Religious Trauma offers language to help you understand what you've experienced, process your hurt and anger, and start healing on your own terms. You'll learn how to turn your self-judgement into curiosity, and your shame into self-compassion. Each chapter includes multiple inventories, checklists, and personal reflection prompts to help you connect more deeply with yourself and gain insight into how religious trauma has impacted you. Grounded in research and counseling experience, Miller takes a religiously neutral approach to healing. She knows from experience that many religious trauma survivors are understandably anxious about perceived hidden agendas, particularly those tied to religion and spirituality. So whether you're looking to leave religion completely or seek a new, healthier relationship with your faith, For God's Sake can help you recover and explore who you are beyond religious trauma.

The Bear Hunter's Daughters

"Go jump in a lake! Bawdy, fantastic, and surprisingly poignant, The Bear Hunter's Daughters is the perfect book for the wildest person in your life. Told with brio and humor, this fable of the seven redhaired sisters settles deep in your bones. I loved it from beginning to end." - Keith Donohue, author of The Girl in the Bog and The Stolen ChildIn this funny and unforgettable modern day fairy tale, seven sisters raised in the woods fight to keep their freedom. Deep in the woods of western Finland, a bear hunter has raised his seven daughters to live off the land and steer clear of the trappings of life in town, like cell phones and a social life outside their family. When on his youngest Elga’s twelfth birthday the hunter is killed by his prey and their mother dies soon thereafter, the sisters are left with unpaid bills and a leaky house. The tension between sticking to the wild ways their father taught them and submitting to well-meaning townsfolk’s efforts to “help” threatens to divide the seven sisters. The eldest, Johanna, tries to wield control, Elga feels tempted by the pull to education, artist Laura spends all her time dreaming up sculptures and exploring nature—but the sisters' trips to the farmer’s market to sell foraged mushrooms and their free time in their vast forest home bring them together in riotous fun. With evocative language and visceral scene-setting, readers get lost in world they’ve invented together and join the fight to protect it. Inspired by Aleksis Kivi’s classic Finnish novel Seven Brothers (1870), The Bear Hunter’s Daughters is at once realistic and fantastical, an intensely sensory exploration of our essential bonds both with nature and with one another.

Lamed Vav and the Power of Mystical Kindness

Explore the Lamed Vav mythos in the Kabbalah, early Hasidism, and Jewish folklore• Highlights the tradition of the Lamed Vav—36 hidden righteous individuals in every generation who sustain the world with acts of kindness• Relates the Lamed Vav mythos to topics of positive psychology such as meditation, peak-experiences, synchronicity, and higher consciousness• Provides activities based on the Kabbalah and early Hasidism to enhance your receptivity to Lamed Vav individuals in your life and become a Lamed Vav for othersIf you have ever witnessed an act of extraordinary kindness, the sort that seems to come from beyond everyday human experience, perhaps you had an encounter with one of the Lamed Vav. According to Jewish mysticism, these 36 hidden and righteous individuals keep humanity alive through acts of sublime kindness. Psychologist and professor Edward Hoffman explores this fascinating mythos from its Talmudic origins through the Kabbalah, early Hasidism, and recent appearance in the contemporary world. He examines the esoteric meaning of the number 36 (literally lamed=30, vav=6) in Kabbalistic lore as well as the Elijah archetype and its importance in the work of Carl Jung and his protégé Erich Neumann. Hoffman develops the notion of Lamed Vav consciousness—a powerful, inborn force for kindness that exists within each of us. He provides guided visualizations to call forth our Lamed Vav consciousness by drawing on themes from sacred texts like the Zohar and Jewish folklore, such as Miriam’s Well, Solomon’s Ring, and the Tree of Life. He also shares self-reflection exercises to help us recognize hidden Lamed Vav figures in our daily life and become a Lamed Vav to others by boosting our compassion, empathy, simplicity, playfulness, reverence for nature, and joy.
