In the nineteenth century, France embarked on the colonization of whole swathes of Africa and Asia. What drove this policy, and what methods did it use to establish and enforce French domination? What disruptive effects did this have on the colonized societies, and what did it mean for their economic and social development? Today, can we say they have been completely decolonized? Empire on the Cheap offers new answers to these ever-controversial questions. Drawing on extensive archival work and statistical analysis, Denis Cogneau offers a richly detailed description of the colonial states and how they functioned, with a particular focus on issues of taxation, military recruitment, capital flows and inequalities. He shows that the Empire cost France little until the wars of independence following World War II, and that capital from France did not trickle down to the colonies. The French Republic proclaimed its 'civilizing mission', but its rule did not lead to the development of the occupied countries, and instead established violent colonial regimes with ambiguous and sometimes conflicting goals. Such regimes mainly benefited a small minority of French colonists and capitalists. Yet, even after winning independence, nationalist elites in the former colonies most often maintained an authoritarian and deeply unequal state order. Examining both the evolution of the colonized societies and what has become of them after independence, Cogneau makes a major contribution to our understanding of imperialism, past and present.

Lamborghini

Francis Bacon is undoubtedly one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. In his paintings, Bacon radically disfigures his subjects, making them all but unrecognizable. This is no mere stylistic quirk, but the expression of a deeply held aesthetic vision. For Bacon, the essence of a subject can only be captured in the distorted recording of its appearance. His disfigurations are therefore, as he himself says, attempts to bring back the intensity of reality, to paint images that are 'truer than the literal truth'.
In this groundbreaking collection of essays, some of today's leading philosophers and psychoanalytic theorists go to work on Bacon. They do to the artist what the artist does to his own figures: they disfigure and distort him, twisting and turning him into something new and previously unseen. Komentář je zaměřen na komplexní výklad právních předpisů v oblasti bytového spoluvlastnictví a bytového družstevnictví v aktuální podobě, několik let po nabytí účinnosti významné novely občanského zákoníku a zákona o obchodních korporacích č. 163/2020 Sb., která zásadně proměnila právní rámec obou oblastí. Cílem druhého vydání je nejen shrnout a systematizovat provedené změny, ale především zhodnotit jejich praktické dopady. Publikace reflektuje rozsáhlý nárůst judikatury vydané od prvního vydání a promítá ji do výkladu jednotlivých ustanovení. Vzpomínky na mrtvé
V tomto mrazivém románu autora „nezapomenutelného a děsivého“ (cit. Harlan Coben) Honu na Bubáka se skupina studentů během cesty po Apalačských horách střetne s nadpřirozenou hrůzou.
1983: Tři vysokoškolští studenti se vydávají na týdenní výlet, aby pro svůj školní projekt natočili dokument o pomníčcích u silnice. Projekt začíná jako zábavné dobrodružství provázené dlouhými jízdami po prázdných silnicích a nočními táboráky, kde se sobě navzájem začínají otevírat.
Když se však odváží vydat hlouběji do apalačských lesů, atmosféra začíná temnět. Všímají si, že stále více památníků obsahuje zvláštní, znepokojivý symbol, který ukazuje na zlověstné tajemství. Paranoia se prohlubuje, když se jim začne zdát, že jsou sledováni. S jejich vozidlem je přes noc manipulováno a někteří místní obyvatelé působí všelijak, jen ne vlídně.
Zanedlouho začne studenty trápit otázka, zda tato úmrtí na silnici byla skutečně náhodnými nehodami… nebo se tady děje cosi děsivého?
