Based on interviews with upper-middle-class Egyptian Muslims, Is God for Revolution? explores the ways in which political participation in the 2011 Egyptian revolution--and the emotions that came with it--changed the landscape of religious discourse and practice. Before the revolution, the interviewees found themselves in structures of culturally agreed-upon forms of religiosity. They were raised during what scholars call the "Islamic Awakening" of the late twentieth century and heeded the advice of religious figures that circulated freely in mass media. Visible markers of piety, such as the veil for women and beards for men, became commonplace. This all changed in one charged moment. In the wake of the uprising, Nareman Amin shows, revolutionary feelings--notably hope, disappointment, doubt, shock and anger-transformed their understandings of what it means to identify as pious Muslims. Is God for Revolution? is a book about social change in a time of political upheaval and uncertainty, specifically the relationship between affect, politics and Islam. It is a story about postrevolutionary agency, the emotional toll that this democratic experiment had on those who believed in the revolution and its ideals, and the transformative power of autonomy and emotion on young revolutionaries'' attitudes toward religious authorities and religious beliefs and practices.

By the early twentieth century, it became common to describe the United States as a "business civilization." President Coolidge in 1925 said, "The chief business of the American people is business." More recently, historian Sven Beckert characterized Henry Ford''s massive manufactory as the embodiment of America: "While Athens had its Parthenon and Rome its Colosseum, the United States had its River Rouge Factory in Detroit..." How did business come to assume such power and cultural centrality in America? This volume explores the variety of business enterprise in the United States and analyzes its presence in the country''s economy, its evolution over time, and its meaning in society. Why have ideas about strategy and management changed? Why did business people in the mid-twentieth century celebrate an "organizational" culture promising long-term employment in the same company, while a few decades later entrepreneurship was prized? Second is scale: Why did business assume such enormous scale in the United States? Was the rise of gigantic corporations due to the industriousness of its population, or natural resources, or government policies? And third, culture: What are the characteristics of a "business civilization"? How have opinions on the meaning of business changed? In the late nineteenth century, Andrew Carnegie believed that America''s numerous enterprises represented an exuberant "triumph of democracy." After World War II, however, sociologist William H. Whyte saw business culture as stultifying, and historian Richard Hofstadter wrote, "Once great men created fortunes; today a great system creates fortunate men." In The Accommodation of Democracy, Thibaud Marcesse investigates the implementation of a large poverty alleviation program, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme or NREGS, in Uttar Pradesh, one of India''s poorest and most populated states. The product of legislation passed by India''s parliament in 2005, NREGS is unique in that it creates an employment guarantee for all rural citizens to 100 days of work at a statutory wage rate. It is also the embodiment of a push to democratize local government in India and to empower citizens to make claims on the state. But, as the author argues, the implementation of NREGS has varied significantly, both among Indian states, and at the local level within the different Indian states. Through the use of various data sources, along with qualitative insights from a rural district of Uttar Pradesh, Marcesse develops his theory of democratic accommodation, where the claims made by citizens are not only shaped by levels of economic and status-based inequality, but also by the intervention of local elected officials and bureaucrats. A sobering account of actual democratic practice in the world''s largest democracy, The Accommodation of Democracy highlights that while local level democratization has considerably expanded the scope of political participation at the local level in India, it has yet to translate into a meaningful democratic deepening among its rural communities.

To many in the West, Orthodoxy remains shrouded in mystery, an exotic and foreign religion that survived in the East following the Great Schism of 1054 that split the Christian world into two camps--Catholic and Orthodox. Black death and Black grief are among the most important forces in contemporary American politics. As Shatema Threadcraft argues in The Labors of Resurrection, "spectacular" death--experienced publicly and violently--has given rise to global political movements, but it has also had an important gendered effect that has complicated Black women''s relationship to the "Black people." Though Black women face a crisis of premature death, their deaths are most often instances of intimate partner violence and occur in private when most large-scale Black political mobilization centers around deaths that are spectacular. Threadcraft highlights how the centrality of spectacular death has functioned to marginalize Black women in the stories of Black peoplehood.Premature death haunts all Black life and therefore the dead are a constant presence in Black politics. Ironically, though Black women''s deaths are often hidden from view and marginalized in Black politics, Black female activists have helped Black communities truly "see" death and they have worked to and keep the dead within Black political communities. Profiling the resurrective political work of Ida B. Wells, Mamie Till-Bradley, Clementine Barfield, Barbara Smith, and Margaret Prescod, Threadcraft builds on her award-winning scholarship about Black women''s access to intimate life and freedom, to consider how Black activists navigate the politics of Black suffering. In so doing, she looks at the challenge that contemporary feminist activists face in attempting to make violence against Black women visible and to ameliorate Black female suffering.

A story of triumph out of tragedy, uncovered in the ashes of Vesuvius The archaeological park of Pompeii is one of the most famous sites of destruction anywhere in the world. From the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE until the eighteenth century, Pompeii and its neighbor Herculaneum lay preserved under a thick layer of volcanic material. Since excavations began three hundred years ago, Pompeii has been revealing the secrets of its victims and the ordinary shape of their lives prior to the catastrophe. But did anyone survive the disaste? n popular culture, the eruption is viewed as an apocalyptic event in which everyone died, while scholars generally assume that some escaped. Steven L. Tuck settles that debate. He starts by establishing the circumstances and timeline of the eruption and the evidence that people at both Pompeii and Herculaneum had the chance to escape the eruption. From there, he moves to the search for survivors. Using evidence from inscriptions supported by archaeological, documentary, and literary sources, Tuck finds survivors in twelve different communities and uncovers details on how they rebuilt their lives, livelihoods, and identities after fleeing the volcano. While some survivors integrated quickly into their new communities and used their new city''s name in the personal names of their first generation, others preserved cultural markers from their destroyed communities through language, religious dedications, and renewed businesses. Many of the families that escaped intermarried with other refugee families, but also ran for public office in their new cities, made generous donations to their communities, and integrated while maintaining their former identity. Some refugee families came to the aid of the less fortunate by taking in poor and orphaned survivors, while others married beneath their previous station. The Roman government responded to the needs of the refugee communities with new housing, infrastructure, and services, but, as Tuck demonstrates, the real work was done by the refugees themselves.By asking new questions about Pompeii and innovatively examining the evidence, Escape from Pompeii proves the survival of Pompeians and Herculaneans after the eruption. It sheds new insight into their lives, pre- and post-eruption, and provides new conclusions about the Roman world and its response to unimaginable suffering.

Mistrust of the democratic electoral process has become rampant among Americans, particularly Republican voters. This trend carries profound consequences: widespread disputes over election results and resistance to the peaceful transfer of power threaten to undermine the very fabric of American democracy. It is, therefore, essential to understand why mistrust is spreading. No analysis is complete without a thorough accounting of the role of right-wing media in US politics.Weapons of Mass Deception challenges the conventional wisdom that right-wing media outlets like Breitbart News and Fox News function primarily as news organizations, using empirical analysis to demonstrate how they more closely resemble political organizations. Analyzing nearly four million online articles published by thirty major right-wing media outlets, Yunkang Yang finds that disinformation consistently ranked among the highest engagement stories between 2017 and 2020. In 2000, the United Nations Security Council passed resolution 1325, which addressed, for the first time, the experience of women and girls during conflict and the need to consider gender in peacebuilding. From this landmark resolution, a groundbreaking Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda has evolved, guided by ten total Security Council resolutions. But to this point, the WPS framework and related scholarship has yet to meaningfully include queer and trans women in their programmatic work and conflict interventions.Queering Women, Peace and Security fills this gap by applying queer theory to feminist efforts to ensure a gender perspective is promoted by the WPS agenda. Engaging with WPS documentation, examples of implementation, and interviews with practitioners, Jamie J. Hagen examines how the needs of LGBTQ people in conflict and peacebuilding are considered within the current architecture and practices. In particular, she identifies the interchangeable use of the words "gender" and "women," which betrays a larger analytical failure to think outside a binary categorization of gender.
