Wiliam Henry Fox Talbot
William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-77) is widely considered to be the father of modern photography, having developed the process by which photographic images could be reproduced. However, he has yet to be sufficiently appreciated as a photographer in his own right. Over the course of his photographic career, he has made more than 5,000 images that include fascinating pictures of his home, Lacock Abbey, portraits of family and friends, and still lifes of botanical specimens, cloth, and household objects. A key intellectual figure of the nineteenth century in science, mathematics, astronomy, politics, and archaeology, Talbot is arguably the most important figure in the invention of photography. His practice established many of the medium's most familiar genres. Talbot was devoted to the advancement of photography, publishing the first photographically illustrated book, The Pencil of Nature (1844-46), which revealed the potential of the medium to a wider audience. This new monograph features many of Talbot's best-known landscapes made around Lacock Abbey and some of the first negatives ever made. It also includes lesser-known and previously unpublished work that reveals the extraordinarily diverse scope of his work. His photographs reflect and embody the social and cultural issues of the time, but they are also fascinating, often beautiful images that are still as engaging today as they were nearly 200 years ago.

Heaven and Earth
Through the lens of a microscope or the shaft of a telescope exists a universe of boundless life and beauty, that is entirely invisible to the naked eye. Atoms, ice crystals, grains of pollen, snowflakes, butterfly wings, cloud formations, searing comets, and showers of stars are born, live and die. The unprecedented scope of "Heaven &, Earth" offers an awe-inspiring voyage of discovery through this infinite world that is science - from the smallest particles on the earth's surface to tiny dots in galaxies that are billions of light years away. Revealing the extensive range of matter contained in the cosmos, this book navigates a fascinating trajectory through an unexplored world, to celebrate the immeasurable beauty and countless mysteries of planet earth and the universe. It charts - chapter by chapter - intricate landscapes of increasing scale and distance, captured by microscope, x-ray, satellite and telescope. Each magnificent photograph is accompanied by an extended caption that explains it in detail, offering a dose of scientific information that enables us to associate with it on a human scale. This volume presents a unique and richly illustrated insight into the momentous relation between aesthetics and nature, in the light of nature's magnitude and its complexity of life. The result is the ultimate fusion of art and science, through a sequence of images that are as subtle as they are stupendous.

Titian
Tiziano Vecellio (c.1488/90-1576) - known in English simply as Titian - was a remarkably versatile painter, equally comfortable with a wide range of genres and subjects. Unlike many artists from history whose work has been appreciated only after their death, Titian enjoyed fame and success throughout his career, which spanned over seven decades. Based in Venice, Titian received commissions from many local patrons and the Venetian government, as well as many distinguished figures from further afield, such as the Pope, the German emperor and the King of Spain. Titian's contemporary biographer, Giorgio Vasari, praised his skill as a colourist, the artist's careful modelling and depth of colour, shown to especially good effect in mythological works such as 'Bacchus and Ariadne' (1520-3) and 'Tarquin and Lucretia' (1569-71), continue to impress viewers in the twenty-first century. In addition to his success in representing pagan mythological themes, his skill as a portrait painter also won him many prestigious commissions, while his renown as a painter of religious subjects resulted in the creation of high-profile altarpieces, as well as individual works for private patrons. This new monologue combines Peter Humfrey's scholarly yet accessible text with 200 beautiful reproductions of Titian's works, from oil paintings and frescos to preparatory drawings. Careful attention has been paid to the scale and quality of the images, allowing the works and their vivid colours to be shown in their true intensity. The book is a perfect introduction to the work of this original and influential Renaissance artist.

Anri Sala
Anri Sala's video "Intervista" (1998) begins with the artist moving house and finding an old 16 mm film in a box. On it he can see an interview with a young woman, whom he recognizes as his mother, being interviewed for state television in their native Albania. Without the sound reel the sense of the interview is lost, so Sala enlists lip-readers to restore the missing words. When he shows the subtitled film to his mother, she reacts to the words of her younger self with disbelief - could she really have spouted the empty rhetoric the ruling party? When the film cuts to a shot of her smiling beside the party leaders, the video shows her lifting a hand to her mouth in astonishment, or perhaps recognition. Raised in Albania, Sala relocated to Paris to attend the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, and moved to Berlin in 2003. In a relatively short time, he has developed a vision that addresses the issues of a posthistorical world with a haunting simplicity that transcends cultures and borders. While his work's technical simplicity recalls straight documentary practices, its basic concerns - light and darkness, achrome and colour, sound and silence - weave into a poetic investigation of its own medium, whether video, photography or sound installation. Sala has had solo exhibitions at museums around the world - including CCA Kitakyushu in Japan, De Appel in Amsterdam, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris - and his work is regularly featured in major international exhibitions - including the 49th and 50th Venice Biennales (2001 and 2003), the 25th Sao Paulo Biennale (2002) and the 2nd Berlin Biennale (2002). Included in the book are an interview with the artist, a survey providing an overview and analysis of the artist's entire career, a focus that discusses a single important artwork in detail, a piece of writing chosen by the artist for its personal significance and a selection of the artist's own writings.

Lacná kniha Breakfast, Lunch, Tea: The Many Little Meals of Rose Bakery (-25%)
The Rose Bakery is a small Anglo-French restaurant, shop and bakery, tucked away in a street near the Gare du Nord in Paris. This book introduces this hidden gem and the philosophy and style of its creator Rose Carrarini to a wider audience for the first time. Beautifully illustrated with more than 100 specially commissioned photographs, and featuring 100 of Rose's most popular recipes, this book is as much a treat for the eye as for the taste buds. The unique style and atmosphere of Rose Bakery, as well as the people who prepare, buy and eat the food that is made here, are captured in Toby Glanville's evocative photographs. The images show everything from the first preparations for breakfast and gearing up for the lunchtime rush to the final customers lingering over a piece of cake and a last cup of coffee in the late afternoon. Rose Carrarini became a pastry chef because neither she nor the customers of Villandry, the 'epicerie fine' she set up in London with her husband Jean-Charles in 1988, could find the pastries and desserts they wanted anywhere else. Now based in Paris, Rose has been serving simple, fresh and natural food that blurs the boundaries between home and restaurant cooking at Rose Bakery since 2002. Over 90 per cent of the products sold in the shop and served in the cafe are made on the premises with the best ingredients: Rose uses as much organic and locally sourced produce as possible, and has reduced the sugar content in her cake recipes to make them healthier without sacrificing flavour, texture or pleasure. Rose Carrarini's approach to food and hospitality has proved to be very popular with the locals, who crowd into the shop on weekdays, choosing from the lunchtime display of salads, vegetable tarts and pastries displayed on the shop's counter, and line up on weekend mornings for a full English breakfast or a plate of pancakes. This book will make the flavours and style of Rose Bakery accessible for people outside Paris, too.

Britten Benjamin
Benjamin Britten (1913-76) was the greatest English composer of his time, and the first of his generation to enjoy a wide international reputation. With the great success of Peter Grimes (1945), he effectively re-invented English opera and was a pioneer of music for film and radio. His monumental War Requiem reached a wider audience than any other choral work of the century. He had an international reputation as a pianist and conductor and founded a major arts festival in Aldeburgh, the small East Coast town in which he made his home. For much of his life, however, British critics dismissed his music as merely 'clever', and some of his major works had disastrous premieres. In his twenties he considered emigrating to the USA, and lived there for over two years, but homesickness for the county of Suffolk drew him back and inspired some of his finest music. A pacifist and a homosexual, he was the subject of much malicious gossip, yet his sexuality and his political and social convictions directly or indirectly inspired much of his art. For the greater part of his creative life he lived with and enjoyed a uniquely creative partnership with the tenor Peter Pears, for whom most of his songs and principal roles in all his operas were written. In this masterly biography, the author creates a portrait of a great artist and discusses the contradictions of his quintessential Englishness and his world stature, his outsider status and his membership of the establishment, his artistic adventurousness and his constant regard for musical forms and traditions.

Seen Behind the Scene
Since the 1960s Mary Ellen Mark has worked on over 100 film sets as what the film studios call a 'special stills photographer', making thousands of documentary photographs of life behind the scenes, rather than the conventional still photographs made of actors on camera. This exciting book presents the best of her images ranging from the first films that Mark shot in the 1960s such as "Fellini's Satyricon", to legendary 1970s productions like Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" and Milos Forman's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", as well as films from the ensuing decades that range from "Network" to "Tootsie", from "Gandhi" to "Showgirls". She continues to work on film sets and over the last decade has photographed recent Oscar-winning productions such as Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge", Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel" and Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd".Over her career, Mark has been given unprecedented access to the film sets she has worked on, roaming freely among cast and directors, and photographing in make-up, during rehearsals, on the set and off the set to provide a full picture of life behind the scenes. Her experience over the last forty years reveals much about the changes in film-making. She recalls in her introduction how she loved to photograph the director's reaction and interaction during rehearsal when he was behind the camera; but now in contemporary film-making the director is nowhere near the camera, but rather in front of a video monitor away from the set. Her iconic 1960s portraits of Fellini behind his camera fix this moment in film history and are evidence of the changes in technology. Mark's 1960s, 1970s and 1980s portraits also reveal the changing nature of celebrity. When she first started working she would be just another person on set with full access to every cast member and every set. Now with the massive power and impact of celebrity it has become more difficult for photographers to work on set, when actors are constantly surrounded by their entourage of publicists and agents and have their schedules carefully planned with every minute accounted for. In this current climate Mark's more recent, candid pictures of major celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Nicole Kidman are rare and particularly special. This book includes beautiful and engaging portraits, documentary pictures that reveal the way a film is made, dramatic moments in direction and filming, and amusing pictures that reveal the camaraderie on set - such as Henry Fonda making faces behind Katharine Hepburn, well-known prankster Jack Nicholson turning Stockard Channing upside down, and Dustin Hoffman causing a lot of amusement in his female costume in between scenes on "Tootsie". The text for the book comes from a number of high profile actors, directors and film industry professionals who complete this picture of life 'behind the scenes' by sharing their anecdotes and thoughts about their profession. Among these engaging texts
