This new monograph explores the life and work of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), one of the most important artists of the nineteenth-century Neoclassical period. In this insightful and unbiased survey, Andrew Shelton provides the readers with a comprehensive portrait of the seventy-year career of this most celebrated artist. He examines Ingres' position within the turbulent society of eighteenth and nineteenth-century France (during his lifetime Ingres witnessed the revolution of 1789, the coronation of Napoleon as Emperor, the restoration of the monarchy, the revolution of 1830 resulting in the July monarchy, the revolution that delivered the Second Republic in 1848 and the rise of the second empire under Napoleon III in 1852) and the effect the shifting balance of power had upon his patrons and their commissions.The text also fully explores the frequent criticisms levelled at Ingres' work during his lifetime and examines how the sometimes amorphous torsos and extended limbs of his figures reflect the artist's obsession with purity of form over explicit realism. Schooled by France's most celebrated classicist, Jacques-Louis David, Ingres won the coveted Prix de Rome at the age of only twenty-one. His prize allowed him to travel to Rome to absorb the styles and techniques of Raphael and other Renaissance masters. His glory was short lived, however, since Ingres' adoration of Raphael, his sombre palette and his obsession with the clarity of line met with years of resistance from the Paris Salon and the burgeoning Romantic Movement, enamoured with the vivid colours of Paul Delaroche and the fluid brushwork of Eugene Delacroix.In time however, the artist's remarkable body of work won him many supporters and in 1825 he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour by King Charles X of France and was elected a member of the Academy. Ingres society portraits, including the beautiful likeness of the Comtesse d'Haussonville in New York's Frick Collection, and his languorous images of Turkish harems, such as the Grande Odalisque and the Bather of Valpincon in the Musee du Louvre, had confirmed him as the most famous artist of his age. Following his death in 1867 Ingres was awarded a state funeral with full honours. His students continued to teach the Ingriste style and several of his works were placed in the Musee du Louvre. The upcoming Impressionists of course met such traditional success with some disdain, however Ingres' paintings and his remarkable drawings have undeniably had a profound effect on artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso and Cindy Sherman amongst many others.

After the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11th 2001, the world-renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz felt compelled to visit the site. In his own words, he was 'overcome by a deep impulse to help, to save, to soothe, but, being far away, there was nothing I could do. On his return, Meyerowitz soon made his way to the scene where, upon raising his camera, he was reminded by a police officer that this was a crime scene and that no photographs were allowed. Meyerowitz duly left the scene but within a few blocks the officer's reminder had turned into consciousness. To Meyerowitz, 'no photographs meant no history' and he decided at that moment to find a way in and make an archive for the City of New York. Within days, he had established strong links with many of the firefighters, policemen and construction workers contributing to the clean up. With their assistance he became the only photographer to be granted unimpeded access to Ground Zero. Once there, he systematically began to document the wreckage followed by the necessary demolition, excavation and removal of tens of thousands of tonnes of debris that would transform the site from one of total devastation to level ground. Soon after, the Museum of the City of New York officially engaged Meyerowitz to create an archive of the destruction and recovery at Ground Zero. The 9/11 Photographic Archive numbers in excess of 5,000 images and will become part of the permanent collections of the Museum of the City of New York. Meyerowitz takes a meditative stance toward the work and workers at Ground Zero, methodically recording the painful work of rescue, recovery, demolition and excavation. His pictures succinctly convey the magnitude of the destruction and loss and the heroic nature of the response. The images included here are a combination of prints from a large format camera, which allows for the greater detail, and standard 35mm, a format which provided Meyerowitz with the freedom to move easily around the site and capture each moment as it happened. The remarkable pictures in the archive visually relate the catastrophic destruction of the 9/11 attacks and the physical and human dimensions of the recovery effort. The aim of this book is to provide record of the extraordinary extent of the World Trade Center attacks and to documents the recovery efforts. The book will serve as both a poignant elegy to those that lost their lives and as a celebration of the tireless determination of those left behind to reclaim and rebuild the area known as 'Ground Zero'. Twenty eight of the images in from the archive were displayed in New York and then in over fifty cities around the world in a travelling exhibition entitled After September 11: Images from Ground Zero.

In the late 1960s feminism exploded into popular consciousness. Is the naked female body, even in feminist artists' performances, still an objectification of women? Eero Saarinen was one of the world's most celebrated architects at the time of his death at the age of 51, he designed and built more than 35 buildings in his lifetime and collaborated on 30 more with his father, renowned architect Eliel Saarinen. Eero's career began in childhood: As the son of the esteemed Eliel, designer of Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Eero grew up in an intellectually charged environment surrounded by art and design, and entered his first architectural competition while still in grade school. Eero Saarinen trained and practiced with his father until the early 1950s, when he established his own firm and began to design some of the most influential institutions of his day, among them residential colleges and a hockey rink at Yale University, an auditorium and chapel at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, American embassies in London and Oslo, and corporate complexes for General Motors, IBM, and Bell Laboratories that spearheaded the creation of the modern suburban office park. While all of these projects blur the boundaries between architecture, art, and landscape, none share a single, identifiable style. Saarinen explored new materials and techniques in every building, developing innovative uses of granite, glazed bricks, reflective glass, concrete, and curtain-wall technology to suit each program.
