Andy Warhol: The Complete Commissioned Posters

Published for the first time in a single volume, this definitive collection of original posters produced by Andy Warhol reveals the artist's remarkable contribution to the art of poster design. Throughout his career, Andy Warhol easily crossed the boundaries between fine art and graphic design; in fact, he made no distinction between art and advertising. Posters were a natural medium for this talented artist, and he was much in demand to promote some of the most renowned celebrities, causes, and brands of his time. This richly illustrated catalogue raisonné surveys every Warhol poster commissioned for a specific purpose and featuring original artwork. Arranged chronologically, they present a fascinating array of subjects, including cultural events, musicians, politics, and iconic brands. Each of the posters is exquisitely reproduced, including some with multiple variations, and accompanied by informative texts and comparative illustrations. The author's introductory essay offers a brief history of poster art and contextualizes Warhol's output against masters of the form such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Keith Haring. Seen in their entirety, these posters--bearing all the hallmarks of the artist's finest work--both reflect and reveal the cultural zeitgeist that drove Warhol's innovative practice.

Brazil the Beautiful Game

Having photographed football in Brazil for two decades, no one understands the country's obsession with the sport better than Christopher Pillitz. From Brazil's sun kissed beaches to its spotlessly clean favelas, Pillitz reveals the sport as Brazil's religion. His bold and brightly coloured photographs show players of every age and walk of life. They take readers from enormous stadiums and prison yards to the tops of tall buildings and, amazingly, a match on a deep sea oil platform; across countless streets, alleys, and highways; even inside a local seminary where long-robed monks display incredible agility playing in their cassocks. While he captures stylish kicks, athletic headers, swaying dribbles and passes, and the samba and capoeira behind the incredible moves, Pillitz also shows us the wild excitement of the colorful, eccentric fans, and, of course, he reveals the gentle side of the beautiful game - the many women footballers and fans who enjoy the sport as much as their male counterparts. Timed to coincide with Brazil's hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, this absorbing and thrilling collection will help new and seasoned fans understand what football truly represents to the country's people and its culture.

Art Deco

The Art Deco style is so recognisable and widespread that its original influence on the culture in which it emerged has been all but lost in the clutter of imitation. This book draws our attention back to the birth of Art Deco - a period between two devastating world wars when industrialization was flourishing, interest in archaeology was peaking, and movements such as Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism, and Modernism were turning the art world on its head. Brilliantly designed to reflect the style it celebrates, Art Deco is filled with hundreds of examples of painting, architecture, interiors, jewellery, crafts, furniture, and fashion. Author Norbert Wolf traces the chronology of the Art Deco style by looking at the politics and culture of Europe in the 1920s and early 30s, and the artistic movements that paralleled its popularity. He follows Art Deco's influence in Europe, and its immigration to the Americas and Asia. Most importantly, this wide-ranging volume looks beyond the era of Art Deco's origination to the present day. Pointing to the numerous revivals and contemporary echoes in painting and even literature, this beautiful volume demonstrates that Art Deco is alive and well today - often in forms where we least expect it.

New york bike style

America may be a nation obsessed with automobiles, but today the bicycle is giving the car a run for its money. And while New York is just one of many cities that is implementing new and exciting bike-friendly policies, the local cyclist population stands out as one of the most diverse, inventive, and stylish in the world. New York Bike Style celebrates this diversity with full-page photographs of riders and their bikes. Photographer Sam Polcer has combed New York's five boroughs looking for subjects who reflect the myriad styles and demographics of the city's cyclists--from Puerto Rican Schwinn aficionados celebrating their heritage with vintage bikes to fixed gear freaks who eat, sleep, and breathe drop handlebars; BMX kids honing their bar-spins at skateparks to fashionistas floating down leaf-strewn streets in capes and dresses. Each page is captioned with the subject's name, what kind of bike they ride, where the photo was taken, and where they're headed. The book also features close-up shots of gear: wheels, seats, handlebars, baskets, pedals, and panniers as well as a startlingly stylish array of bike fashion. Whether they're pedaling to work or play, racing with a club, or out for a lazy ride, New York Bike Style pays photographic tribute a city in love with biking in all its forms. With contributions from David Byrne and Casey Neistat.

Vespa

Vespa fans will delight in combing the pages of this history of the world's most recognizable scooter. Written in cooperation with the manufacturer, Piaggio, it tells the story of the scooter's origins in post-war Italy, when the rebuilding of the country necessitated an affordable and modern means of transport for the masses. Italian for "wasp", the term "Vespa" caught on quickly, but the scooter achieved international stardom when Audrey Hepburn hopped on Gregory Peck's Vespa in the film "Roman Holiday." As a result, a vehicle originally designed as utilitarian came to symbolize style, freedom and romance. The book includes a gatefold listing the Vespa models from 1943 to today along with images of Vespa's throughout the decades, including the most iconic designs as well as today's luxury editions. In colorful photographs and text this volume also traces the succession of technological and stylistic improvements that have helped maintain Vespa's status as one of the world's iconic scooter brands.

Design Groundbreaking Moments

The Bentwood chair, Bauhaus furniture, Dieter Rams' designs for Braun, Apple computers, and Ikea furniture have made their way into homes and offices around the world, but all these objects signify major departures from those that came before - a new way of designing things that, in many cases, we now take for granted. In twenty diverse and fascinating chapters, this book explores numerous such "groundbreaking moments" in product design. Conceptually - rather than chronologically - organized, it focuses on innovative, nonconventional approaches by designers, artists, and schools of ideas that left indelible impressions on the ways we live and work. Each chapter opens with a design object that founded or laid the groundwork for a style, introduced the use of new materials, uncovered new production techniques, or redefined the functionality of the object. From the unique to the mass-produced, each of the objects featured here tells the story of an idea, its implementation, and the way it shaped the world.

Kawaii!

Although some trace the phenomenon of Kawaii as far back as Japan's Taisho era, it emerged most visibly in the 1970s, when schoolgirls instigated a quiet calligraphic rebellion. From cute stationery to illustrations, followed by manga, Hello Kitty, Harajuku, and, ultimately, a pervasive culture of cute that touches every aspect of Japanese life: from the robotics industry to the postal service, architecture to food. As colourful as its subject matter, this book contains numerous interviews with illustrators, graphic artists, fashion designers, scientists, and scholars. It explores the phenomena of Harajuku, Sanrio, and girls' manga, and traces the roots of Kawaii from sociological and anthropological perspectives. It also looks at Kawaii's darker sides as it morphs into gothic and gloomy iterations. Best of all, this book illustrates the cultural movement through hundreds of colourful photographs that capture Kawaii's utter ubiquity: on the streets and inside homes, on lunchboxes and airplanes, in haute couture and street fashion, in cafes, museums, and hotels. Perfect for page-flipping or cover-to-cover reading, this entertaining and authoritative volume will leave readers with a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
