Lichteinstein Posters

Roy Lichtenstein's art is most recognizable for its trademark Benday dots and two-dimensional planes, cartoon-like qualities that placed him at the forefront of the American Pop Art scene. With its heavy emphasis on America's consumer culture, Lichtenstein's style lends itself easily to the poster genre. This volume opens with his earliest poster, designed for his first exhibition at the Leo Castelli gallery in 1962, and closes with his last, which he completed in the year of his death. An additional section features reproductions from the Claus von Olden collection and includes posters and flyers that were produced all over the world using Lichtenstein's iconic motifs. The works reflect Lichtenstein's prolific imagination and ability to adapt his vision to the promotion of music and film festivals, theatrical performances, museums, restaurants, public service messages, as well as his own exhibitions. An essay by Jurgen Doring expounds upon Lichtenstein's development as an artist who blurred the boundaries between low- and high-brow art. The book also includes an illustrated biography of the artist.

Fashion, animals, surrealism, and staged portraits are also explored. Perfect for perusing or reading from cover to cover, this book illustrates how photography developed from a concept to a world-changing force - one that attempted to shed light on truth but which can also obscure and alter reality in dazzling ways.

Caravaggio and His Legacy

They were known as the "Caravaggisti" - artists who imitated the 16th-century master's earthy, realistic style or subject matter. Caravaggio's impact on his contemporaries was immediate, but in the decades that followed his brief career, hundreds of artists drew inspiration from his innovative use of intense light and shadow, the distinctly theatrical atmosphere of his paintings, his use of religious imagery, and his preference for painting directly from life. This companion volume to an exhibition features works by Caravaggio and more than thirty other artists. The book displays an amazing cross section of genre, portraiture, historical subjects, and religious scenes. Bringing together previously unconnected painters from Italy, Northern Europe, France, and Spain, this remarkable collection brilliantly illustrates Caravaggio's enormous effect on the development of 17th-century European painting.

Magnum Revolution

The history of revolution is as old as humanity; yet it is only since the invention of photography that we have been able to discern the realities of these conflicts from the distance of time. Starting with the Algerian uprising in 1954 and culminating with the most recent triumphs and tragedies of the "Arab Spring," this book brings together hundreds of colour and black and white images that depict historic events from a human perspective. Iconic images from revolutions in Prague, Nicaragua, Tiananmen Square, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Lebanon, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and other locations are introduced in double-page spreads, featuring the images of Magnum photographers such as Raymond Depardon, Burt Glinn, Rene Burri, Josef Koudelka, Susan Meiselas, and many more. Introduced by New Yorker journalist Jon Lee Anderson, and featuring interviews by Paul Watson, this uplifting and important book offers, for the first time, a collective understanding of the universal dream of freedom and the inevitability of change.

Drawing Surrealism

Drawing, often considered a minor art, was central to surrealism from the very beginning. Automatic drawing, exquisite cadavers, and frottage are just a few of the techniques invented by surrealists as means to tap into the subconscious realm. While previous books have examined the connection between drawings and surrealist paintings, Drawing Surrealism is the first to recognize the medium as a fundamental form of surrealist expression, and to explore its impact on other media as well. Surrealist collage, photography, and even paintings are presented in the context of drawing as a metaphor for innovation and experimentation. It is also the first book to encompass a wide array of artists on a global scale - from the great figures in surrealist history to lesser-known surrealists from Japan, Central Europe, and the Americas, where the movement had a profound and lasting effect. In addition to brilliant reproductions of drawings and other works by more than 100 artists, this volume also includes a substantial historical essay by the exhibition's curator, as well as informative essays by leading scholars. This ground-breaking book offers a deep understanding of the techniques and concerns that made surrealism such an intimate perceptual revolution.

Stieff Fashion

One of the most famous and popular photographers of his time, Jeanloup Sieff photographed some of the most beautiful women and men of his era. This wide-ranging collection of his work captures some of his most famous photographs spanning a career of nearly forty years. These nudes and fashion shots portray more than beautiful bodies draped, or not, with beautiful clothes; Sieff's personal interest in whatever lay before his camera, and his continually evolving style, render these photographs pieces of art. Whether his assignment was for Glamour, Vogue, or Harpers Bazaar; whether his subject was Yves Montand, Rudolf Nureyev, Twiggy, or Catherine Deneuve, Sieff was never afraid to take chances with location, equipment, lighting, or convention. Rounding out this exciting monograph are texts from his favourite models, such as Deneuve and Charlotte Rampling, as well as essays by Frank Horvarth and Purple Magazine's editor Olivier Zahm.

Awakening the Night

Delving deep into the subjects of philosophy, psychology, and astronomy, this beautifully illustrated and wide-ranging volume offers a chronological approach to understanding how artists of all kinds have dealt with the subject of nighttime. It opens with the early nineteenth century, focusing on the tension between romanticism and enlightenment, idealism and realism, beauty and science. It then goes on to explore the introduction of electricity, the subsequent illumination of urban spaces, and light pollution. Finally, it investigates contemporary images of places that come alive in the darkness - subways, mines, theaters, movie houses, and nightclubs. Filled with the works of renowned painters, photographers, sculptors and filmmakers, this volume is enhanced by a series of insightful essays that help us understand how artists' depictions of nighttime have evolved in tandem with developments in technology, science, and philosophy.

Angels from Dante Rossetti to Paul Klee

For centuries, artists have incorporated angels into their works. In the Symbolist movement of the late nineteenth century, these heavenly figures embodied a defiant stance against the materialism and scientific rationalism of that era. The Pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau artists especially embraced the angel as a romantic symbol of beauty, grace, and imagination. The masterpieces included in this volume feature angels in varying styles from an international spectrum of artists and movements. Starting with pre-Symbolist artists such as Delacroix, Blake, and Turner and featuring works by Gauguin, Burne-Jones, Kandinsky, and Chagall, the book traces the evolution of angelic depictions through the early twentieth century. Evocative texts and poems celebrating the angel in all its forms are scattered throughout this elegant and inspirational collection.

Gustav Klimt: Painter

The enfant terrible of the Viennese art scene, Klimt was notorious for his portraits of beautiful women. Illustrated with color reproductions, this book profiles the women who figured in the artist's life and on his canvasses. The author looks beyond the standard assumption that Klimt was a hard-hearted philanderer, pointing instead to his committed and loving relationship with Emilie Floge that prevailed despite the parade of beautiful women who wandered in and out of the artist's studio. Partsch demonstrates Klimt's role in the evolution of portrait painting, which helped usher in the age of Expressionism.
