Plánování a myšlení zaměřené na člověka jsou způsoby, jak naslouchat druhým lidem, učit se, co je pro ně z jejich pohledu klíčové, hledat cesty k budování a posilování jejich sítě pozitivních vztahů a hodnotných společenských rolí a v důsledku toho posilovat jejich sociální začlenění. Uplatnily se ve složitých situacích, na které nestačí standardní – „konfekční“ – řešení, ale je potřeba vyvinout individuální strategii, ušitou na míru pro konkrétního člověka, aktivovat rozmanité zdroje a vybudovat alianci lidí usilujících o pozitivní změnu v jeho životě.
Kniha je určena profesionálům ze sociální oblasti, kteří chtějí překračovat čistě administrativní pojetí sociální práce, jde jim o to, aby jejich intervence byly skutečně účinné a dávaly znevýhodněným lidem šanci žít lepší životy v síti pozitivních vztahů a dosahovat ve společnosti ceněných sociálních rolí. Stejně tak může pomoci lidem, kteří využívají vlastní žitou zkušenost k tomu, aby pomáhali ostatním, kteří se ocitli v podobné situaci – např. členové pečujících rodin a peer-konzultanti apod.
